12hrs Trying To Play SH5 Sheesh Almighty

Had SH5 for 12.5hrs

Almost threw the damn dvd through the window

I need help please lol

In 12hrs of play i've managed to get online to choose a game, sink 1 ship

I am getting stuttering as i move around (at best, or worst a lockup requiring hard reboot)

If i make it up on deck to use the uzo or below the periscope i'm lucky, then if real lucky i get to sink the initial ship that's parked just off my bow

Here's some rig specs ..........

X48 mobo
8 gig DDR2 running dual chan
2x4890 in crossfire, or i disable xfire
Quad Q6600 @ 3.6gig
Logi G15 kb and 518 mx mouse
Vista x64 ultimate
ohh and a Xfi Xtremegamer card

Res option in game set to 1920x1200 @ 60hz

I am now renaming the sh5 .exe to FEAR in hope xfire may work

I am now upto using cat 10.1 from SH4 9.7 i used to use

No idea what to set CCC settings to (eg: set AA there or leave it for the driver to run to mommy n see what the games set at for AA)

Any ideas/suggestions be much appreciated as i'm starting to get slightly peed off now

Cat settings/Game settings, anything replied i will try

Don't mind running one card just so long as i can play the game

The game crashes

Sometimes the screen will freeze then unfreeze, more often it freezes, goes black, and i get a sound freeze like "click click click" forcing me to hit the pc reset button

As i say at best i can manage the intro/choosing game options/start new career/get woken up/go speak to captain/sink ship just off the bow

I am still trying cat 10.1 with xfire disabled, AA and AF set to x4 in cat panel and i also choose CAT AI to advanced - MIPMAP on high quality - Vertical refresh Always ON - AA on Quality and Triple buffering on

In game option i choose high graphics and leave all else

In sound i uncheck the music

Think that's a bout it

Ohh just had the sound loop lockup again, but did again manage to sink the ship right on the bow

So summary, at best i get to sink the ship with a few random freezes, at worst i get a freeze that then starts a sound loop sounding like click then a pause then click over n over

Will now try cat 10.2 again with no xfire running, then i only have the 3 variants of cat 10.3 to try :(

Long winded but hopefully someone can help me get this working ;)

I am using Cat 10.1, but only have one 4870,
You have far higher spec than me, so not really sure what the problem is, unless its your Vista x64?
Anyone else running Vista x64 with SH5?

mine is running on Windows 7 32bit?

my CCC is set to

AA set yo application
AF set to 16x
cat AI disabled
Mipmap quality
vsinc off
adaptive AA off


I also go into windows task manager and set priority of SH5.exe to HIGH

with that all is smooth, no lockups, or CTD's?

Can you determine, what your virtual-memory settings are at? (R-click on My Computer/Properties/Advanced/Performance/Settings/Advanced...)

And how much free space do you have on your C-drive?

Did a fresh install of vista earlier before i went to buy the game

So i have plenty of space on the C: (over 423 gig empty)

Now as i've just had to hard reset yet again to get pc back working, the v-mem is set to 8489 MB by right clicking computer etc etc

That's without game running (but i assume the 8489mb is a threshold so won't change even if games running ? )

Anyways, just updated cat to 10.2

Just read shmall's post, will try high priority and those settings

Keep replies comin, i'll even moony out the window if that'll fix the darn game lol

Windows 7/64 Home Premium, 2.4GHz Athlon 64 dual-core, 4G RAM, GTS250 1G running directly from Antec 550-watt PS...no stability problems. Stuttering only at high TC, however rapidly becoming immaterial as I've grown bored with Campaign(s) and find it's EVER so much more fun - and CHALLENGING - doing Blackswan/Upholder's MP Missions with me mates !

It is a problem with the game . I have exactly the same problem . But my graphic card driver doesnt meet minimum specs . It does exactly the same . In outside views the game freezes and then the card clicks and i have to turn the computer off and start again . Disclaimer , my graphic card driver doesnt meet the required specs and there is no other drivers . Does your system come up with all the minimum specs ticked green ? If the answer is yes then there is something wrong with the game ..........

I have Exactly the same problem . Let me guess , setting to high priority makes absolutely no diffrence .

Well with cat 10.2 and shmall's ccc settings i managed to sink the ships, get sent to kiel, was about to id a taskforce on route to kiel then pow, sound loop n dark screen again :( hard reset needed grrrrrrrrrrrr

Did not try the high priority though, will try that now

Ohh i notice the sea if stuttery now though :( but did like playing for more than a few minutes lmao

The priority might do something, in Trainz it seemed to help me last year, but then new drivers etc etc so who knows, at this stage as i say i would moon out a window to get a stable game lol

If all else fails i'm gonna stay up a while longer and try the 10.3 variants

All these settings are non xfired though (dang waste of a good 4890)

PPS, never had to in any game thus far, but i could try xp compat-mode, as i say never had to resort to that except i think the initial arma2 release (hmm minds foggy)

I also tried turning off the sound acceleration in the dxdiag . No luck . I am playing in xp so i doubt that is the problemo . The devs might have to fix this .

Since i bought sh5 i have always had syncronise with servers turned off and always had your problem . I just turned it on and it is going ok so far cross fingers . Nope that didnt work , it just wont play for more than 10 minutes at a go on this laptop . I give up .

I have just tried 100% fan cooling on both gpu's and still get crashing/lockup (so gpu overheating aint the problem)

On cat 10.2, with cat settings at default and game options on high graphics i do seem to get longer playing time before a hard lockup, did even recover from driver stopped working (see far below)

As soon as i change some settings in cat panel it seems quicker to a hard lockup (maybe just chance obviously without lots of testing and time wasting :( )

So i now have cats 10.3 and 10.3b to play with

For me it's pointing to a driver issue (maybe slightly in conjunction with a game issue, but for now i'm thinking solely a driver problem)

Many moons ago i had a lot of driver stopped responding issues with an nvidia card, found a long way round fix though using parts from an earlier driver, then right after nvidia released a new driver and all was sorted (sh4 worked as such, nice n smooth etc, just that on a torpedo explosion the game would hard lock) Now thinking back it's deja vu he he

Will check game options for the sync option, not noticed it really as i aint got to the stage of worrying about detailed game settings lol

But do you use driver sweeper when you install another driver?

Another question, did you check all your drivers? I am only thinking

Looks about right to me....your V-mem appears to be set at "Let Windows manage size", and it will usually stay that way, yes.

Now installed 10.3b preview off the ati site

I had tried sweeper and also tried just installing over-the-top updated drivers, so neither pinpoint to the case :(

Anyways, now i doing a total fresh install of sh5, just putting it in C:/SH5 folder i made

Then i'll reboot and add the patch unless it autoupdates

Did find a post with a guy and a 4890 (i had tried xfire and disabled xfire) and he had the dl'ed version of the game, his dl was corrupted, so maybe a fresh install off the dvd might help

Installing the game using admin rights, then will try after patch etc

If all else fails i'll try xp sp2 patch mode

Ohh, i will uncheck shadows (i assume in games options somewhere)

My bios is fine, the chipset i'm sure i have the latest but will double check

May not help but I read somewhere that if you have multi core processor it runs a lot smoother setting the game to run with one core only!:hmmm:

Hey, Defiance, I had simular issues with my old 4890. Try clocking the card down a bit with ATI Overdrive in CCC. Pretty sure that will do the trick.

News Update lol

With xfire disabled, ccc on default, cat 10.3b (preview) , shadow game option Off (off dunno for sure if this does anything but it's set to off)

I played a bit then left it running while i went out for 2hrs i guess, and game was still running when i got back :)

My 4890's are clocked (1000/1100) but run cool enough, but will try clocking them lower, bios flashed but hopefully the option in ccc will let me clock down

Just exited game and made a few game option changes, set AA 3 notches to the right (AA 4x i hope)

Will keep on posting bits as i test

Some great news and a bit of bad news

Well i have played and hit a merchant somewhere near Hull, then i skipped out to sea eastwards from hull in pursuit of a lone merchant

Weather was rainy and windy vis was bad, dived/listened/surfaced to get a line on the merchant, just as i was sure i had spotted him pow, sh5 crashed me to desktop and the game was instantly shutdown

So i am getting closer to a stable game at last

Ohh and the mouse movement was slick :) not a single stutter and i could pan round as fast i wanted and everything was instantaneaous

Think i disabled v-sync in game options but will check asap

Game Settings ..........

High, AA on 2x (1 notch to the right, think 1 notch but will check)

In ATI CC settings are ..........

AA use app settings
AF use app settings
AI Disabled
MipMap High Quality
Wait for Refresh - Off unless app specifies
AAA Unchecked
Triple Buffering Unchecked

And i didn't try xfire with the above settings, but i bet xfire won't work or at best i'll get stuttering

Gonna have another quick sortie, if i get time i'll add the deffo game option settings

Yeah dropped both to defaults, still same problem

But with the above settings i'm still sailing trying to sink something lol

Did do a rear shot and blew a destroyer up :)

Ohh and game V-Sync was Off

Time for sleep now

Will test these settings with xfire tomorrow :)
