Hello all. I recently edited my basic.cfg file in Ubisoft\SilentHunterIII\data\Cfg (I backed it up first) to award me renown for reaching Patrol Grid, successfully patrolling 24 hours, and for completion of patrol.
I saved the file and started SH3 Commander, then ran GWX. I did a short patrol, completed the 24 hours, then returned successfully. No renown points awarded. When I re-opened the basic.cfg file, it had somehow reverted back to its original without the changes. So I edited it again, went through the same process, and still no renown.
Here is what that section of the "edited" cfg file is supposed to look like:

[RENOWN]
RenownReachGridObjCompleted=100
RenownPatrolGridObjCompleted=100
CompletedPatrol=200

Can anyone tell me if there is an extra step I'm not doing, or maybe issues with Commander/GWX ? Thanks all.

There are no issues with Commander or GWX.

Are you editting the GWX CFG then saving before exiting?

What do you mean by the "GWX CFG"? So far the only file that I read about that needs to be changed is the basic.cfg located in /cfg.
Yes I am saving then exiting.

I did the same thing with my basic.cfg and then noticed later I wasn't getting renown for those things (altho you'll probably never get it for "CompletedPatrol," IIRC there's a stock bug and that one never works no matter what you do).

I finally realized that I had enabled some other small mod that overwrote my edited basic.cfg file. :doh:

Didn't get a warning notice from JSGME, of course, because I hadn't used it to overwrite the file to make the renown edits in the first place.

Does that mean that I need to use a different program than notepad to edit the file?

I am running GWX with Lite Harbor and Open Hatch activated, plus Commander.

Save yourself all the bother and simply open up the Patrols_0 CFG in C:\Documents and Settings\Jim\My Documents\GWX\data\cfg\Careers...name of your Kaleun

...and change the DeltaRenown near the bottom to any amount you want.

BUT ONLY WHILST IN BASE

No, what I mean is, if you use JSGME to enable a mod, and that mod is going to overwrite a file that another mod has already changed/added to your game folder, it will notify you that you are about to overwrite your current modified version of that file with a different one from the new mod.

If I had added the renown edits back into the game by making a mod that did so by overwriting the entire basic.cfg file, and then tried to enable another mod that overwrote the same file a second time (thus disabling the edited version I'd already enabled), I would've gotten a warning from JSGME that I was overwriting the same file again. But since I modified the file outside of JGSME it had no way of knowing that I had done so and thus did not notify me that I was overwriting my version of it with a different one from a subsequent mod.

My point is that some mods overwrite the basic.cfg file, and if you have made manual edits to that file in Notepad and saved them, you will lose them if you enable a mod that overwrites your edited version of that file and does not include the same edits you did manually.

If you edited your basic.cfg file but have not since enabled any mods that might have overwritten it, then you're having a different issue than I did. If you are enabling mods after making the manual edit, however, check them to make sure they are not replacing your edited basic.cfg file with a different version of it.

Edit: as far as I can see, neither GWX Open Hatch or GWX Lite Harbor Traffic do anything to the basic.cfg file. If those are the only modifications you've made to the game other than the manual edit of the basic.cfg, then it shouldn't be the case that your edited cfg file is getting overwritten by another mod.

Here's a related question:

As of my last patrol, I had 120,000t but no Ritterkreuz due to my realism settings. I did, however, have the EKI, so I should be eligible now that I've sunk a total of 200,000t. I understand about altering basic.cfg for medal renown values, but can you get both the Ritterkreuz and Oak Leaves all at once?

I vaguely remember reading somewhere that the game only awards one of those at a time, so what should I do here? One idea I had was to modify the basic.cfg values so that when I arrived in base, I'd get the RK right off the bat and then give myself sufficient renown to get the oak leaves as well while in base.

I'd also need to know when to do it----I'm currently on the southwest of England and headed home to Kiel---so any advice is appreciated.

If you prefer you can just edit your Careers.cfg and Careers_0.cfg files to award yourself the Oak Leaves after the game gives you the KC. Or you can just award yourself both at the same time.

They'll be in whatever folder in My Documents stores your saved career/kaleun info, in data/cfg/Careers/[kaleun's name].

Once you are back in base and have exited the game, open the Careers.cfg files and scroll down to the bottom where you'll see all the kaleun's info as it stands after your most recent patrol.

About halfway through that last chunk of data you'll see the lines indicating your current medals/badges which will look something like this (numbers after = may be different):

Medal0=4
Medal1=5
Medal2=6
Medal3=7
Medal4=-1
Medal5=-1
Medal6=-1
Medal7=-1
Medal8=2
Medal9=3

The numbers after each = sign say whether you've got the award or not. Default is -1 which means you don't have it. If there's a positive number there, you do have it.

The corresponding awards for each line are as follows:

Medal0=Iron Cross Second Class
Medal1=Iron Cross First Class
Medal2=Knights Cross
Medal3=Knights Cross With Oak Leaves
Medal4=Knights Cross With Oak Leaves and Swords
Medal5=Knights Cross With Oak Leaves, Swords and Diamonds
Medal6=Knights Cross With Golden Oak Leaves, Swords and Diamonds
Medal7=U-Boat War Badge
Medal8=U-Boat War Badge Front Clasp
Medal9=German Cross in Gold

If you've already got the IC2, IC1, and KC, you should see positive numbers for Medal0, Medal1, and Medal2. Just change the -1 for Medal3 to a positive number, for instance if you see Medal2=4 (for your KC) then edit the next line so it reads Medal3=5 (I think any positive number will do, but I like to number them so it reflects the "order" in which they were awarded). Save the edited file.

Then open Careers_0.cfg and make the EXACT SAME EDIT in the exact same place, i.e., in the same lines reflecting medals status in the last section of info which is how things stand after your most recent patrol. I recommend just copying the info from the first file and then pasting it into the second. Save the second edited file.

If you use Commander you should be able to open it, choose that kaleun, click on the thingy where you update his personnel file, and when you open the updated file, you should see that he now has his Oak Leaves for his KC. This should also be reflected if you load him up for his next patrol and check his medals collection in-game.
