View Full Version : Can this be done? Hidding under a ship?

Hi

Can this be done? Can you follow an enemy ship by positioning yourself directly under a ship? say a tanker? again I have seen this in a few movies and have a couple friends that live in a giant dick them self and they say yes,
but I have not seen it possible in SH3.

has any one ever attempted this???

basically hiding in the baffle.... no, this is an engine limitation and if you have already attacked, the ship may accelerated to 10 kts and you won't be able to keep up submerged.

It is possible in the game, if you attack a convoy. The real-life problem is that real submarines don't have external views, so getting under a merchant and staying there is extremely difficult, to say the least.

I've only ever hidden under merchants in convoys that have stopped after i torpedoed them to avoid DDs hunting me.

Plus, unless the merchant is going real slow, it's gonna drain your batteries real quick!

The escorts can still detect and attack you (if they're fitted with K guns) whilst your under a stationary merchant.

If it is still underway, the noise of your propellors will give you away in any case.

The way this is done is you immobilize the enemy ship to the point where it isn't moving. You then use your obs. periscope to guide yourself underneath the ship.

I have done this a few times, no more than five though. I used this technique to evade destroyers in Scapa Flow. It will work because the destroyers will not ram the ship your hiding under to get at you for a depth charge attack.

now like I said I have only done this a few times so anything can happen I guess. Good luck

Just hope the ship doesn't sink on top of you or explode :D

HI

I have found a pic with this done in SH3 heres the link
http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=84773&page=21

Well anyways I was wondering about a moving ship but this is good enough.
however I'll prob never have a successful go at it.

Thanks!

Thats funny you mention that, I had that happen last time I tried to hide under a tramp steamer. Let's just say it was unpleasent

I sat under under a Battleship dead in the water and slowly going down, the escorts were not happy. But they knew I was there, had to move off after a while or have 38,000 tons of battleship parking on top of my U-Boat.

I guess the point is it works in a pinch, though it's not exactly on my list of top maneuvers :)

yes! it works! I sat under the half submerged wreckage of a tanker (12 meters of water) and was able to out wait and outlive the inevitable destroyer reprisals. In 12 meters of water it was the only thing to do, but it worked nicely. I was lucky because the wreckage had settled and i found a good nook underneath. I couldn't be sure if this technique masks your profile when being pinged but it does prevent the destroyers from getting in close and they are unable to drop charges. Another, similar technique that worked was to bring my boat right up to the shore and tuck it in there sideways, the destroyers cannot drop cans on you in this scenario as well

Where were you? It sounds like a harbor to me, if so I've done that one. Just the other day actually, when I attacked Scapa Flow. I had to hide out for a while to wait out the storm, so I slipped in beside a Fiji class light cruiser.

Yes. I posted a series of 7-8 pictures on how I was able to pick off a DD who relentlessly came after me. I believe I racked up several battle wagons also. I'll have to find that link here on the forum - quite a good time I must say. I hung under a disabled battle wagon, kept the DD on the hydrophone dial tracking him and poked out for the kill after he circled 6-7 times.

Very frustrated escorts!

meanwhile, a few meters down, were having a cup of tea and listening to the gramo

It was done in real battles, the sound of merchants did mask the sound of sub and allowed it to sneak away. Many real life tactics does not work in simulators (while some things nearly impossible in real life does work in sims)

The other day I was playing a single mission, it was a convoy of the US coast, I think, in very shallow water. So shallow that the ships I sank were still visible on the surface when they hit bottom.

So I just drove my sub, using the periscope, right next to the wreckage and stopped.

As the escorts circled the wreckage, I sank them with torpedoes as they came into view. :)

Thats what I am talking about hidding under a ship while gaining entry to a harbor. But really some sensors should be masked by the host ship.

Once, I was under a halted T2 with two FLOWERS above also stopped. Everytime I made a move to go away, the FLOWERS were immediately above me!!! I can't remember what finally happened...I assume they sunk me.

They probably reacted to your every move because there are no barriers in game to their sensors.

Is that you with egg on your face, Jim? :haha:

I've hung out under disabled ships before, sure. But to follow under one into harbor? Can't say that I've tried that one yet. All the ports I've been to are probably too shallow for that.

Suddenly it vanishes in game because it reached its final waypoint and your the duck in the barrel that everyone is shooting at :DL

You know, I've done my share of harbor attacks. There alot easier than they actually sound but following underneeth a ship to get in, I don't know how well that would work.

There is always a way in.. you just have to look pretty hard sometimes to find that opening
