Game review by IGN.

If I've learned one thing from Naval Assault: The Killing Tide (http://xbox360.ign.com/objects/067/067556.html), it's that being the Captain of a submarine can quickly go from exciting to downright boring. Apparently, subs only possess three depth settings, and combat boils down to the occasional exciting torpedo shot, followed by several moments of evading and/or sitting with your engines off as depth charges explode around you. That is, of course, unless your enemy pilots his ship into the terrain and kills himself in a reckless effort to take you down.

IMO, this game needs a subsimer to review it. Though it does seem like a buget title so perhaps a 4.5 or a 5 out of 10 might seem accurate.

bucked up and bought it. it is what it is. :shifty:

reminds me of SSN, in terms of it falling into the 3rd person sub combat genre, focusing around an "alternate" WWII scenario in which the germans attack the states, instead of the japanese. so sadly, there are no uboat missions here.

it does have some redeeming qualities to it. sure there is virtually no boat (other than speed and depth) or crew management options, but the actual meat and potatoes battle action is actually fun to play.

if you're getting bored with it,chances are you are secretly just frustrated you cant get a perfect 5 star rating in every mission like i am. harder difficulties do make some levels more intense.

i read something on the gamefaqs forum about stars "stacking' from one difficulty rating to another. (five available stars for each mission, multiplied by three difficulty levels = 15 total possible stars for each mission, if what i read is indeed true)

edit= after further testing..this is not true. what is true is that your stars can be accumulated no matter which of the three difficulties you decide is appropriate for whatever particular mission you are attempting. this allows for trying missions previously unbeatable on higher difficulty levels with one of the upgraded subs making it not necessarily more easy, but certainly more intresting.

the subs to choose from are:the sentinel (default)- the patriot (my favorite thus far)- the victory (designed for surface battles)- and last, but certainly not least- the swordfish (ultimate bad ass)

the first upgraded sub for use is at the staggering cost of thirty stars. the next @ 45 stars, and the last, a whopping 65 stars.

enemy units include:fighter planes,bombers,eboats,uboats,frigates,light cruisers,cruisers,battle cruisers,and battleships.

the graphics are average for a next gen console game, and read some complaints about the repetitive soundtrack in game. i find the piano music rather soothing considering almost everything that moves in the game can drop depth charges on you in the blink of an eye, even if they don't move out of the way.apparently they are immune.

once you get past the limitations imposed on you and your boat by the devs, and get the hang of how to avoid getting blown up, and what needs to be done on each mission, it really is an entertaining game, and trying to accumulate stars for better boats=replay value. combine the 2-4 person multiplayer option, with a full compliment of leaderboards and achievements to boot, and you have a game.

proceed with caution captain, there are no in-game saves available for use here. you die, you're dead. :damn:

at the very least worth a weekend rental, even for non-naval combat enthusiasts. i give it a six out of ten whatever you decide is your standard unit of measure.
