US invasion of GC and Battle of Savo.
US TF and Invasion force arrive at night. Invasion Force heads west and TF covers around Savo.

Next day they patrol around being attacked my mass planes.

Late that night the JP TF shows west of Savo, bout 6 CA's, Kuma and a few DD's. Heavy fog and storm clouds, can't see anything, set up to shoot by radar using Okane.

Hit a Takeo CA with all four, it later sinks. Chase forever and sink a Kuma.

Weather clears to light fog, The fleets surface battle, many large CA's go at it.

Hours later, almost morn, I set up and sink another Takeo leaving the battle

Not bad for a lil Sboat. Put 5 torps in other ships that didn't sink.

Hey how do you get this battle?
I'd be interested in knowing the answer to this to. Is it part of the original game, or is it part of a mod?

I haven't checked the ME, I refuse to peek in there, but got to be Lurker's work with RSRD as it's perfectly scripted to the ships, dates and locations. Even the US picket boats are there. I have no idea if the Solomons is in stock as none of the map labels are. You can watch the battle here historically to prepare as the JP moves exact.

Just beware the planes are murderous in number and I basically stay dived all day. With all the ships and planes, things get real slow.
Here they come right on time. I don't know that I'll do it in a pigboat again, can't keep battery charged for all the planes and you have to be in front.

He did the entire Solomon's Campaign perfectly, from the Shoho invasion..I got it earlier to the big one, battle of Coral Sea...couldn't catch them in my pigboat to the battle of Santa Cruz...headed that way now.

Nice shots! - but in a S-boat? Anything with less than 10 tubes is just so... :nope:

I hope you managed to save "Astoria", "Quincy", and "Vincennes"! IMHO the New Orleans Class was one of the most beautiful types of cruiser ever built.

Hehe,,You do get messages...but it helps being in the right place at the right time...Just found the carriers for the battle of Santa Cruz...should be fun.
S boat is a death trap, glad to be in a Salmon now.

but it helps being in the right place at the right time...Yeah, here's (another) something missing in SH IV.
Recently I read ("War in the Boats" or more probably in "The Rescue"?) how someone from HYPO or The Old Man himself would pay a visit to the skipper before leaving for patrol. Pulling the skipper to a side and handing him a note with coordinates and time: "We think it would be a good idea, if you could be here!"... on several occasions the time would be bang on even to the minute!
A large deal of the subs successes can be adressed directly to the codebreakers work - so in that sense, knowing history could be seen as the work of intelligence...?
Perhaps this should get worked into messages.txt... :hmmm:
...glad to be in a Salmon now:rock:
And when you grow up, you may join us in a Gato :smug:

Well, it's a balance. We have history and with RSRD, no doubt can take advantage of it. Still, many of the battles are the luck of the draw even if you know about where they're. You have to be at the right place to make them spawn on the path. People would be shocked if they really found some of the battles and invasion forces. The right time you can watch mass carrier plane attacks on other carrier groups.
I agree, skippers got clues and also many Ultra reports from base and other subs, something lacking in the game. TMO use to include the radio guy that picked these transmissions up, but it was a little too detailed in convoy movements.
Take the Battle of Santa Cruz..I've looked for a long time to do this battle even though I've looked for it, but found it finally. It's one of the largest TF in the game. I've chased this TF for over 400 miles all night trying to do an end around...finally in position, so hope I don't blow it like my first setup... Hopefully I can watch the US planes attack it in mass soon and join in. Last large battle I pulled over 20 US pilots out of the sink...fun to do when it's not a mission.

OK! I'm using RFB/RSRDC and I can't see this battle! I'm there on 8/8/1942 through 8/9/1942 (twice now) and nobody shows up. What is the trick?
Armistead
04-08-10, 04:09 AM
Not sure..Did you stay late through 8/9 and morning of 8/10?
I'm using TMO, but I think all the battles script the same regardless of supermod.
The large US invasion fleet shows up I think the night of 8/8 along with the US TF.
You see this?
The JP TF will go around Savo and go back up the slot if they all don't get sunk.

I entered the Savo Island area early on 8/8 and stayed to the east of the island stopped until midnight on 8/9 - 8/10, pretty much where I expected the invasion fleet to anchor. I have a save before I steamed into iron bottom sound to try again. I was getting many drops out of TC, but no contacts. I'll stay longer and see.

Do you have radar...Check your sonar for a bearing where the JP TF is coming and see if you can hear anything.
If it doesn't show, must be a difference with RFB, but I wouldn't think he would change the historical date for the actual battle.

Just loaded the save (8/6/42 6:00am) and will see what happens. I'm in USS Swordfish (SS-193) so no radar yet.

Well it just doesn't happen in my universe. Lot's of planes but no fleet action and I stayed through 8/12. :wah:

Must be a RFB thing. You are running the correct RSRD and the latest patch. Leave the patch out it screws up traffic...you probably are, just checking...
Course you could peek in the mission editor.
Still something is strange, cause I don't think Lurker would change the historical dates for mod...I don't think he did.

Just reinstalled on a new system in February, so it was all correct at that time and I haven't noticed any strange behavior. I started a new career at the beginning of the war at Manila and am on my third patrol. I've only encountered single ships except for an invasion fleet at anchor off Vigan and some CL's and DD's racing through the Jawa Sea. That seems normal for the period. I did get a signal about a convoy enroute to Rabaul from Truk which never showed up, and I don't see how I could have missed it as I was stationed to the NW of Rabaul at the bottleneck, but that might not mean anything.
Anyway, it's not a big deal but would have been fun to watch the battle.

Don't know, why I asked if you had the RSRD patch installed. I missed it for awhile and my traffic layers were screwed up until I installed it. Something doesn't sound right, you running any other mods, list them and we can see if anything is up.

Looks good to me....guess RFB changes it or it's just getting by you somehow..Lurker stated once he didn't change historical dates for battles, but who knows.
Well, there are other battles...Try Leyte Gulf, you can't miss that one.

If you're running RSRD, if you're at the right place, right time Aug. 9, 1942. You can't miss it.
SS says right after Midnight, so it's early Aug 9. If you were there Aug 9 at night, you'll miss it.
Best just get there Aug 8th and wait.
Either the 7th or 8th, a large allied convoy and TF will show up east of Savo, the TF will head up near Savo, the convoy more west at GC.
If RSRD is set up correctly, it's there. It's not like it changes or they change their mind, it will always show up. I believe you're running RSRD.

If you know you were there, you either missed it or your RSRD install is messed up.
