They really need to learn to choose better targets ! :har:

Suspected Somali pirates fired on a U.S. Navy warship off East Africa early Thursday in what appeared to be a ransom-seeking attack on an American guided missile frigate, officials said.

Oh, gosh...what's that thing, again, that can be used to get rid of pirates??? Gosh, it's on the tip of my to...oh, that's right, KILL THEM!!!

If each ship passing through those waters had a 20mm Vulcan on each side, I think the pirate problem would stop.

Yea thats a BoB waiting to happen. A month ago a merchantman got a radio message telling them the ship approaching them was going to board them. The merchantman's crew freaked out and started running and calling for help from coalition ships in the region.

The ship approaching and telling them they were going to board was a Yemani Coast Guard patrol boat looking for smugglers.

Time to review some basic naval tactics

1. Look at your target. If the guns on your target's ship are bigger than your entire ship, you might want to reconsider

2. If your target's secondary or lower weapons are bigger than your primary weapon, you might want to reconsider.

3. If your biggest weapon can still be carried by one man, you might want to reconsider attacking a warship.

4. Consider the nomenclature. Generally speaking a guided missile frigate > sciff

Yeah, if your warship is made of wood and floating on memory then you might consider just fishing for a living! :har:

If the worlds fishing fleets would stop stripping their coastal waters of every living thing that might actually be an option for them.

That would be one big dude to be able to carry not only the M-29 launcher and the M-388 round. Normally the M-29 required a three man crew and a vehicle.

But you are right, one M388 vs a Guided Missile Frigate could ruin the Frigate's day.

The M-388 was an interesting weapon system. :yep:

Not really, just a simple case of doing the math. The Soviet has something like an army of 2 million with 40,000 tanks, most of that stationed where it was a threat to Europe. The US had a lot less (its like 1.4 mil total armed forces today, Navy, Army, USAF the whole thing) but it was stationed an ocean away or part of commitments in other theaters (Korea, Japan, SEA etc.). Giving three guys in a jeep a way to wipe out a tank company would help even the odds.

Then there is Communist China, the world's most populated nation. They could probably draft an equivalent number of troops to the entire population of the US! Just think if we had these weapons in Korea? Would those Chinese human way attacks have worked?

If you are inferior in Numbers make up for it in Technology. :yep: Yea its scary but CBRN weapons are a way of achieving superiority via the Technological route.

I'd still prefer there wasn't a need for them....the other side might have them too :hmmm:

One of my Favorite quotes by Heinlein:
"Nevertheless, let's assume that the human race manages to.. become peaceful. What Happens?
Soon (about next Wednesday) the Bugs move in, kill off this breed which "ain'ta gonna study war no more" and the universe forgets us."
-Starship Troopers Pg. 185

As for the other side having them, I say let them. A big conventional army like the Soviets had costs a lot, building high technology weapons also costs a lot. What happens when you do both? Well... look what happened to the Soviets at the end, Chapter 11, this space for rent, under new management...

Build a doomsday bomb but keep a small army and your enemy doesn't and chooses to build a large army you risk not destroying all of your enemy's army with it. You don't build a super bomb but build a large army the reverse becomes true. You both build them and you end up right back where you started. MAD, it worked.
