View Full Version : I got the AA to work!!!
I finally got the AA to fire...but to do it is really not easy.
There is a VERY small area in the area of the plane NOT THE PLANE ITSELF!!? That turns the cross hairs red in the binocs. The guns then start firing on any approaching aircraft.
Buggy at best.

excluding the point and shoot of you actually manning the gun, this being a guide dog for your flak crew is a joke. its utterly implausably unrealistic. theyre fighting for their survival and should be able to aim autonomously and gun for the biggest threat once theyve recieved the order to fire.
whats next, they cant wipe their butt unless you get the binos on their butt!!?
im supposed to be the commander of a weapons system, with a trained crew; even with varying experience theyre still trained. the whole notion of holding their hand is completely stupid. dunno how, but please mod this......pleeeeeeeeeze.

Already done. The DW UI has a Watch Officer interface that lets you set ranges and behaviors. Works great.
I knew that, planes still don't attack

Yep, it was that way in SH4 too.

True, but you could also have the crew set to fire at either anything within range, or specifically cycling targets actively attacking the sub.
I found the latter to be handy when being attacked by multiples and effectively getting the flak gunners to switch targets rather than continuing to shoot at one that's flying away, and ignoring one that's currently shooting your sub.
I recently had to put that to the test in TMO 1.9 against two Jap Zeros that wanted to sink my sub in really shallow waters.
Which reminds me... I'd watched a History channel show awhile back about how the British had their air fields set up during the war. The show was actually about radar and how it was set up, and how the Germans ignored it. Anyway one of the things about the show was going into the Bofors 40mm in detail. It was pretty cool seeing it in action on my sub.
Haven't played around with the flak guns in SH5 yet at all. Crash dive works!
well most uboats that didn't crash drive when a plane appeared were stupid, a uboat is NO match for a plane, in both SH3 and 4 shooting planes down was way to easy :(
JUST CRASH DRIVE, like all good uboats did anyway ;)

true, however if you find yourself unable to dive due to damage, resupplying, etc then youd want your flak assets to fire as advertised and operate in a realistic fashion.

true, but really, if you are on the surface when a bomber or fighter attacks, you're almost always a gonna irl.....
I am glad its a lot harder to hit aircraft, makes it far more realistic, as a oppossed to the other SH's where you would shot down any aircraft that appeared?
Although the planes in SH5 need to attack more??? ;)
I have attcked a few planes myself, but out of 107 ships sunk I have only shot down one aircraft ;)

cheers shmall.
i know this is supposed to be a subsim, but aircraft had such a huge impact on the campaign.
whilst i agree with the odds being against you, i'd like to think that even reasonably accurate flak fire MAY at least make an air attack against you less effective.
i think of it like this, if you were the captn of the boat and you couldnt dive it for whatever reason, youd deploy your flak and expect it to do something.

yes you would....but it wouldn't do much, sorry to say ;) :(
I too use my flak too, sometime my self and somethimes get the flak gunners to use it, but mostly i crash dive, as most uboats did :)
I used to hate the way SH3 and SH4 could hold off masses of planes with their pop guns lol ;)
prefer SH5 to that....although I should add, I wish the damn aircraft would attack more forcing me to crash dive or fight at least lol :(
cheers shmall.

Well I read somewhere that the U-Boats shot down 212 aircraft while losing 168 subs to air attack though I think the figures should be the other way round as they would be closer to the ones on uboat.net which has a partial list where they mention 120 aircraft shot down or crashed under fire from u-boats while 250 u-boats sunk by aircraft; some of the U-boats having been credited with 3 kills.
So it should be quite possible to have a successful dual with aircraft if desperate measures need to be taken.

yeah that sounds about right, I have one kill so far ;)
I migh manage 3 kills by the end of 1943 if I'm lucky lol ;)

Unfortunatly, I've yet to be remotly close to a desparate situation in SH5. I think thats half the issue with this release.

The ONLY time I've had to take aircraft into consideration in SH5 is when doing, "Historical Missions" or MP! NEVER in standard Campaign mode have I been forced to do ANYTHING due to aircraft. SO, in the standard game, even if Dieter won't man the flak guns, who cares?
