Does anyone know the true rate of descent, I seem to be able to dive very fast from a periscope depth position when I am going 1/3 ahead

Hello,
the boats were able to dive very fast, in case they flooded additional "cells", even at low speeds - but they would then need pressured air, to bail (right expression?) those flooded cells again, at the desired depth.
So if you lose more pressured air after a fast dive, than as if you are going deeper dynamically through propulsion and rudder alone, i guess that should be ok.
Greetings,

To me it looks rather fast going from periscope depth to surface, or from 20 meters to surface.. faster then we got used to in GWX!

My thoughts too. I liked the suspense in GWX wondering if you could get down or to the surface in time to engage or hide

Sorry to necro this thread, but I just ran across this:
Statements by various prisoners indicated that it is considered quite normal for a U-Boat to crash-dive to the usual 30 metres (98 ft.) in 28 seconds or less. One man said that "U 660" could reach this depth in 24 seconds, but others did not confirm this.
From an interrogation of prisoners from U-660. (http://www.uboatarchive.net/U-660INT.htm)
