Moi moi everyone :salute::salute::salute:

I'm pretty new for SH3 and still "on the learning curve". I'm using SH3 with GWX 3. I've one small question for the old Kaleuns.

I spotted enemy convoy from 10km away. Clear weather and excellent visibility. I've no information about the convoy, except that they were heading towards me. So my tactic was: I submerged and went with "halbe Fahrt voraus" when the convoy was still in great distance, and changed to "Schleichfahrt" when they were at middle distance (mittlere Entfernung), turned 90 degree and waited for them. It worked pretty well, except that I had to fire torpedo from pretty long distance (3km I believe, the 1,5x periscope is no use at all, I must always use 10x).

Now I want to get closer, but the problem is, when using Schleichfahrt, you go at 2kn and it takes nearly an hour to go 3km. Of course you can go faster, says 5kn with langsame Fahrt, but I don't know how great the risk detected by DE is. And from this long distance, the only way they found you is using hydrophone.

So, is anyone so kind and tell me about the DE hydrophone detection range and the way you use to get close to the convoy.

Thank you all and gute Jagd :arrgh!::arrgh!::arrgh!:

PS: one more question, do you know how many Täuschkörper we have?

Sorry I don't speak German, but anyways, you can usually drive submerged at slow speed and hit the front corner of the convoy and get within 1000m with no problem. Keep your periscope down as much as possible.

welcome aboard, Kaleu! :salute:

there are some tutorials but I try a shortened version:
first in engaging convoys is to plot its bearing correctly. just sail on a parallel course and take some readings. the more the better.
when you are sure about the direction and speed (you can measure the distance it covered), you should overtake the convoy so you are some range ahead of it. then you plot your own course to intercept. go to PD when the first DD is sighted. then you just have to wait ......

Also,during the early months of the war you should be trying to plan your attacks surfaced at night,you should be invisible due to their lack of radar,but later on your attacks will be done more and more submerged.Basically,get in,attack,and get OUT! FAST! ALWAYS plan your escape route when engaging convoys under escort.Even if you miss get OUT,and return again once you are in position by steaming ahead of the convoy to a pre determined position.

To make best use of your speed to gain position ahead of the target(s): Put it on your 90/270 degrees! It either slowly falls back (good, just be patient), or it shifts up to your bow(though luck, he's too fast).

But 2 knots is pretty low if the AOB is allready quite large. He's likely too fast. As suggested it is best not to dive immediatly on sight as default action. Move surfaced to extreme visible range and plot it's course while following on parallel course. Then get ahead of it and only then dive to start the attack. In your case it was the propper thing to do since you were in front of them. Or move away from them at flank. Unless they were a highspeed convoy you'd have ample extra speed available at flank.
