I have taken the plunge and purchased SH5, and would appreciate some advice on the best mods to install ( i assume that may mean most of them, due to the post state of the game)

Thanks for your help:)

The first obstacle will be the UI, so perhaps have a look at TheDarkWraiths solution. Should also add in commands that are much needed, such as toggling battery recharge. Haven't had time to try it myself yet, but it seems pretty good. :)

The sticky above lists some very good ones as well.

I think you should go minimalist at first. Just use the fix the bugs and a couple interface mods and see how it goes.
Make sure the game runs fine with the minimum mods and then add from there.
I started with Morale Mod, Electric Wake removal, Command Keys, Mighty Fine Crew to start for the first mission. Been adding to them since because the game runs perfectly stable.

Personally I dont have any issues with the UI, actually I like it very much as it is. What bothers me is the AI and how casual the game is. That's why I use only mods that deal with the retard AI and the critical bugs found in game. So far best worked for me was:

BARF full
Critical hits for torpedos
Haramirs Escorts Self Awareness
Damage assessment

These mods will have a long life as is nothing mentioned about AI fixes in the upcoming patch.

IMO, totally required:

Hot Soup, TDW UI, BARF+DA, ChurchKeys.

Quite nice:

Graphics upgrades like white interiors and clouds and uniform/medal changes and the lovely MightyCrew, more powerful torpedos, MoraleMods (and leveling ones).

I'm staying away from AI based mods since the early AI is intentionally bad, but gets better later on. So far I don't think any of the AI mods are balanced with the entire game in mind, just making them murderous at the beginning.

How latter on? I'm in the beginning of 41 and the AI is still completely retarded. Actually they are worst than ever. If they get better in 43, it might be too late...

Agreed...the DD/DE's are totally clueless. I'd just surface in their midst to do my attack runs, but those friggin' eagle-eyed MERCHANT freighter/oiler gunners'd get me for sure!

Get Church's KeyCommands. That, to me, is the most essential, coming from SH3. DarkWraith's UI is nice too. Stormy's soundpack is essential. and Ail's Clouds for beautiful puffery in the sky.

Download Skwas's Speech Recognition for SH5 v1.4

Absolutelly stunning mod. Very large command list (over 5 pages printed), also usually many different ways to say one command (for example: surface the boat, let's get some air, bring her up). Also relatively easy to add change commandphrases to your liking. This is the way this kind of game should be played!

Only problem now is that with the second patch due in a couple of weeks (from what I've read), how many of these Mods will be compatible? I can think of several I use that won't be (particulalry if there are graphical changes/optimisiations, Morale changes, Sub behaviour etc.).
Ahh well, the beauty of a continually evolving Sim (just as with the experience with "Rise of Flight").
