play it for one reason or another?

I have it but can't play it on my machine. From what I've read I'm not missing anything but frustration. So how many have been frustrated enough to drop the game until one or more things are fixed?

Turn the shadows off and see if it becomes playable. Understanding that the control room and sonar/captains bed area are the worst for FPS.

FPS are fine for me, almost in every situation (more than 60 in the control room, ati hd4870, no vsync). I just don't play the game because i'm waiting for the next patch.

I'm slowly becoming bored with it. It works fine with the mods (that sentence is there to try to put off the trolls) but without any real threat from the AI , without a variety of targets to sink its fast becoming tedious.

Me. :damn: I'm not playing this until the last patch has been implemented (I'm dead serious). At the moment SH5 just doesn't exist for me... Oh and also my PC is crap at the moment and I will require little under a year or so until I get funds for upgrading.

I have 30 mods installed in running, my game is almost as good as GWX SH3:P

If only i had a realistic campaign and neutral shipping, i would be all set.

I haven't played it in over a week since I was able to sink 4 troop transports and a 16 ship convoy with the deck gun in broad daylight without getting any damage. I was even rammed by a merchant when I wasn't watching (tends to happen a lot when I'm at the deck gun :88)) and it didn't even dent the hull.

I can forgive most of the bugs, but I can't forgive the sloppiness which means that there is no enjoyment from sinking ships and avoiding detection. I'll give it a try again when v1.2 is out, but I reckon I'll be waiting until v1.4 or 1.5 before I bother with it again if at all.

Instead I've got a cheap little tank sim called Iron Warriors: T72 Tank Command off Steam and it's good fun. The graphics are crap but at least it does what it is supposed to do and has a steep yet rewarding learning curve.

Count me in. I purchased the game the week it hit the market, installed it, but could not get past the huge amount of bugs and design flaws, so I shelved it and gave modders some time to work their magic.

(BTW, many thanks to all the modders who are slowly turning this disaster into a quasi-playable game:salute:)

Only yesterday I started to make a mod mix to my liking and I'm still experimenting with it, but there are still several showstoppers so far.
For instance, right now, I'm trying to find the answer to two bugs bothering me immensely:
- why certain ships can be heard on hydrophone only at speeds above 6 knots;
- why, while I am manning the hydrophone myself, the game actually plays ambiance_Torpedo-room_Q.wav instead instead of amb_Hydrophone.wav.

I guess I'm still weeks away from firing up a campaign.

I learned my lesson from Silent Hunter III and Silent Hunter 4. I'm waiting until the end of the year. I will assess the fully patched and modded game at that time and purchase if I like what I see. :)

I bought it Saturday after following all the threads about what is good with it (not much apparently except the graphics) and what is bad about it. The bad list is growing quickly. It will not run well enough on my laptop so I have not installed it yet. I am waiting for my new PC from Digital Storm to arrive before I do anything with it. As with a lot of people, I seriously object to the DRM and having to be online just to play as a single player. DRM is the best encouragement for piracy that I have seen yet. The "suits" just don't get it. They obviously don't read any reviews. Obviously the "suits" have short term profits in mind. They don't care how it sells over a long period of time; they just want it to sell for about a year and then write it off and go do something else half-assed. UBI has other games I would have considered but not now, not with this kind of "protection". It seems as if UBI deliberately releases the Silent Hunter games in beta mode because they can save money by doing it and they are certain the modders with finish it for them.:damn:

It's playable with some mods but the DRM is frustrating and the AI offers no challenge. The crew interaction is infantile. Until they fix it I'm off back to my Type IX.

I have just purchased lockon flaming cliffs2.
The devs should get in touch with the devs of SH5 and tell them how a sim is really done.
FC2 is fantastic and cheaper than what I purchased SH5 for.
Without a proper AI fix this game is useless no matter what is done to it.
I will return once it's been fully patched, if it isn't fully patched then I will be uninstalling and dumping it.
Last ubisoft game I ever purchase for my PC or PS3.
Valuable less well learned.

I was one of the 'holding out' that caved in and bought it.
I play it as much as any new game I just got. I have found all but the AI bugs have been fixed by the modders already. And I haven't looked into the mod section to see if there are any AI adjusting mods out yet.
I have had zero of the crashing/blue screen/low FPS problems. On my machine with all settings maxed (done for me by install) it is very very stable running game.
Oh, and the DRM and syncing issues have caused me zero grief so far (knocks on wood)
From what I have read I am one of the lucky ones I guess.

For the record though, I think they should do teh decent thing and remove the always online requirement so people who do not always have access to internet can play the game.

I turned everything off, my video card is an Nvidia of the 700 series and only 256. When they say at least 512 they aint kidding.

Looks like the majority so far are dry docking their uboats. I'm glad to see some are enjoying it, maybe Ubi will fix it for their faithfully overlooking the arcadish aspects. Nobody shooting back or hunting you down reminds me of the penny arcade sub game machine. Had the preriscope and the ships running in a line on the horizon. A fired torpedo was represented by a red light running under the surface of the water. No counter sub measures to worry about, just point and shoot.

I wonder if Ubi has a counter/tracker to maintain a record of how often each registered game is played? Sort of like a web site counter.
Or maybe they don't give a rat's pituitary gland one way or another.

That or are the ones that are playing it are doing just that, instead of perusing the forums :D

Me, I am killing time waiting for my dentist appointment.

I haven't been playing it that much. I got a couple other new games near the same time that were more finished as well as a new mod for rFactor that is taking up most of my gaming time.

With other games I would probably make time but SH games have always been better after they age a bit :88)

I have the Game.
It is installed on my system
(Which can't run it)
And my Stepson's system
(Which I can't get him off of without a big stick!)

I'm more interested in Modding it anyway.
So my system will work for what I want to do.

I got the Game with a Gift certificate from a member here at SubSim.
I didn't want the Gift and actually deleted it.
But he re-sent it.

Now I'm glad he did.
I see a BIG future with this release!

The AI needs to be corrected but I agree with Reaperman; if you have the right mods installed the game is very playable now, with the AI fix it would be much more challenging however.

Somewhat off topic, anyone notice that STEAM US's highest rated simulation is SHIII?

I also start to get very bored. The game is not only uber bugged, but extremly casual.. there is no real challenge in the game except the faulty code. Never felt so disappointed by a game like I am now :nope::down: If no patch very soon, time to head back to Blizz games...

I'll correct myself, the majority responding to this thread.

I'll respond to this point, but nothing else, as the original question was:

How many have the game but don't... play it for one reason or another?

I don't fall into that category, so I didn't feel I had any reason to post in the thread. I think that many others may have felt the same. If you posted a thread that asked 'How many have bought the game and are still playing it', then that's a thread I could give an on topic answer to.

Ask for reasons why people aren't playing the game and that's what the majority of replies will be. I don't think you can draw any solid conclusions from that, other than people are answering the question in the original post.

I can play with all details fully maxxed out, 1920x1200... I began playing again tonight but it quit my game because of a poor internet connection. If that continues to happen I'll end up just shelving it and NEVER purchasing a game with this DRM system again.

I play it , but not all the time, its been about 2 nights since I've touched it. I agree with one post on here, the Missions are not enjoyable. Go here sink 10,20,30 ships , sink BB DD Aircraft Carrier , sink 200,000tns before X date.

I am waiting for the next patch before playing again and adding more Mods.

I was not going to do it , but I hit everything for the Torpedo man I hit all of his ability boxes just to see if it does increase the explosion power of torps. I can't tell , with all the boxes done I still see ships sailing on with 1 torp and up to 3.

So I don't think these ability boxes do that much for the "power" of torps, they should be taken out. Then again I have started to wonder as I thought at first that Torps were Underpowered compared to SH3/4 but now I am being to think its the Ship "Health" that's been up'd.

Either way, one Torp should do enough damage to at least stop a ship if not put it down. To see a Hit even 2/3 and the ship sails on at no loss of knots.

I played it for a bit, but the blindly stupid AI and the lack of flooding mechanics annoyed me so much that I put it aside for the time being.

I had some mods installed, but it was starting to get out of hand. I figure I'll wait a bit for things to get a bit more consolidated before getting back into it.

It ran fairly smooth on my system with everything maxed.

In the meantime I decided to try out TMO 1.9 + RSRDC. It's been quite awhile since I've done the PTO. Been having a blast (literally.) Even scored a Jap sub at one point and had a wild harbor party in Saigon (7 Marus + 2 Auxillary Gunships.)

Have it and played it a bit mostly for testing mods. Back and stay with SH4 until few patches will be released, a new campaign is modded or/and some Merchants are added.

I think anyone who is complaining about the graphics id just plain wrong expecially when there is so much other stuff to moan about. It is not as though they hid the fact that you need a very high spec PC to make it work...its written all over the back of the box. Therefore, anyone who has bought the game knowing what it required to work but hoped for the best anyway and then feels the need to complain........shouldn't!!!

I have played it non-stop since I bought it on the release date. It has got gradually (thanks to the modders) more and more playable. The major issue in the game as far as I can see it, is the total lack of AI. I am close to the end of the game and have only been DC'd 5 times, all of which I escaped easily......This should be addressed in the next patch as a matter of urgency.

I agree with everyone that the game was released unfinished which is wrong but I am enjoying the development of it and I think in a years time, we will have a very very fine subsim

I had the game but returned it for a refund.

I could play it. But still many bugs.

I have an AMD Phenom II X4 965, 8GB DDR 3, 2x 60GB OCZ Vertex SSD RAID 0 and 2 Sapphire 4850X2's (so quadfire)
That should be able to run it smoothly as it is one of the fastest systems around in this configuration. But it does not really well becasue of some nice bugs. :-(

Other than that I had no desire of waiting for the patches as the gameplay was pretty screwed imho.

Anyway I am still enjoying SH3 now.

But it is a big dissapointment to me. And probably to many others.

Like a lot of people i'm waiting for a patch, so SH5 is playable, been modded a lot i know, but the AI dont play ball and spoil it for me. So i rarely spend more than a few minutes before i'm frustrated with it, Roll on a decent patch UBi.

Me. I bought it, played it. After much frustration and disappointment, uninstalled it for good after giving it three separate chances. I may give it another chance and reinstall again later if Ubi ever releases a 'real' patch for it that addresses the major issues, especially the poor command room performance and the crew fatigue/morale bug.

I bought the game. But I have not played it yet. I am just scared off by reading posts about the problems people are experiencing. I would like the game to run out of the box, relatively bug free and enjoyable. So its just on my shelf waiting around for a patch to fix alot of the issues and hopefully the DRM. Plus I spend alot of my time on this forum because it is more entertaining reading posts than probably playing the game. :O:
