i've seen a few posts about changing .cfg files - some either conflicting or just don't work.
Is there a function for this depth or is it some award that comes later in game?

There's 19 SH5 matches in the first 25 results when you Search (http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/search.php) for "depth to keel"...

If you don't want to mess with the Commands.cfg file you can try this mod (link in my sig).
It doesn't touch this file so you are good to go.
