Renown, Promotion Points and other Rewards?

I have completed about 6 missions and have not quite figured out the upgrade system, however I have been awarded a new submarine.

The Manual mentions Renown, however I have not seen it anywhere in the game. Is the same as promotion Points which I have been distributing to my crew?

How do I upgrade Torpedo's, Flack Guns and Canons? IN previous SHx games you could upgrade your sub at the end of the mission.

When you speak with the Dockmaster there you can ask him to upgrade things and will get a window where you can spend Renown.

What does it take to earn a medal? I've sunk more than 200K tonnes including a battleship, and I don't even get the U-boat war badge. My crew, on the other hand, get Iron Crosses 2nd class.

By the way, shouldn't the U-boat war badge be awarded automatically after 3 patrols or so?

No idea how you get the medals since I'm never made aware that I was awarded a medal... I think I got my war badge around the 3rd patrol, but till I happened to be bored and find it in my medal case I had no idea i had it.

I as Captain have been awarded the Iron cross 2nd class after my first patrol(British Coastal waters.)

Now for just how im to award medals to my crew, I have yet no clue.

Well, today I found out by accident that you can award medals to your crew by clicking the small '+' in the bottom-right corner of their portraits. There was no tooltip at all, so I tried clicking on it and lo and behold, my soundman got a medal - ironically, the last person that deserves one! :haha:

I haven't yet figured out what the small black bar underneath their portrait is. It always says 0/100.

As for my own medals, I got the Iron Cross 2nd class after the tutorial mission, and the War Badge after my first proper patrol, despite the information text saying it was normally awarded after 3 patrols. I've received the Iron Cross twice, apparently - it says I was awarded it on 6th October and 22nd October 1939, after both my 2nd and 3rd patrols.

I am playing on 96% realism (I think - just external cam on), so probably get all the medals due to high renown. It seems a bit unrealistic in any case...? :-?

A little + icon will appear where that yellow box is. Click on that to fill the Iron Cross there and award your crewmember a medal. You can't reverse this, but I think you can only award them when someone's able to get one rather than one for the whole crew type thing.

i'm on the 3th mission and i got the iron cross 2th class and also 1st class although the rest crew got nothing. I have no idea how crew medals work tbh.

Arrrrr, wow thanks Turm boy im going back in now and check this out. We just shipped out on the second patrol and headed for the western approaches.

I tell ya what, if there's anything that IMO this game was missing more than anything else it's a comprehensive manual to explain it all. So much has had to be stumbled upon by accident. I mean hey im glad all this stuff is in there, but would have been nice to know about before heading out to sea.

It's a shame you can't reverse the medal with the 'discard' button, same as you can with the promotion points. I want to rip the medal off the chest of my useless soundman!!!

Now all we have to do is work out what that black bar under the portrait is. Anybody care to hazard a guess?

I thought perhaps it was an experience meter, and maybe it's always at zero because it isn't saved, much like the morale. Or maybe it's something that wasn't yet implemented in the game. Or it could be a space for another badge/medal of sorts?

When you upgrade the abilities of a crew member, that black bar seems to start filling up with white dots. Well, at least one white dot at the far left end of it, which is all I've seen so far.

The black bar is in fact the crew members shoulder strap (epilept- or whatever its called ) it showes their rank. The ability points you award are like training the person, so more training = promotion and higher rank.

I do miss getting back to port and handing out medals and my own promotions to the crew, like in the other games. Why would they get rid of that ?:nope:
This game misses some of the sense of accomplishment you had in the others, to me at least.

So far I've only seen IC 2nd class available for the crew. Can they also get other rewards?

It is in SH5 possible to receive the Knight´s cross with oak leaves, diamonds and swords?

I receive after 25 very successful patrols always only the Knight´s cross.
