View Full Version : Maximum Depth Reached?

I'm wondering what maximum depth's have been achieved and maintained, for how long, and what kind of sub.

Iv'e never really went amazingly deep but I have taken a type XXI down to 300m .went down to the max on the dial then I just ordered a dive till we reached 290 and I leveled off and just floated for the next depth charge attack
(I could see the charges going off like 50m above me through the scope)
I held the depth for the time it took me to finish a cigarette then came up to 260m

Guess my friend and are not the only ones that time things by the cigarette method. Cool!

When asking "depth" questions it is wise to also question which mods are installed.

Type IXB. Stock SH3. 182 Meters. "Uboat destroyed by pressure".
100% Hull Integrity.

It gets most interesting when you use SH3 Commander and enable the 'Randomise U-boat crush depth'.

yesterday I was DCed heavily after an attack at a convoy in February 1943. couldn't get to safe depth quickly enough. at 120m six or seven ash-cans exploded around me. my VIIC took severe damage with flooding in two compartments. fore batteries completely destroyed.
the boat plunged down to 210m until I finally could keep depth ("extreme" speed back and blowing ballast were the key-measurements).
quickly repaired what was vital and went to silent running again. we had only 20% of the batteries left, so we plainly lay aroung 180m and waited for the DDs to leave the scene.

two hours later we surfaced and limped home where we were informed that HI was around 97%
sadly we had still 5aale left, but couldn't risk any further armed engagement. fog helped us through the Bay too, where allied planes are now a real pita.

it's been a first for me! :DL

never reached this stage of war until now. usually I was able to reach safe depths before any escort caught me. I understand there are now more "elite" ASW than in the years before .....

In a type VII/41 I have gone about 290 meters deep without taking any water several times. When in a career with type VIIB I stick to a rule that I never let it past 235 meters. Maybe it could take a bit more but I don't want to lose my career for trying that.
I've gone down to 390 meters in stock SH3 with a type VIIC :D . It was more like a bug but it didn't crush for quite a while even as deep as that. And if I remember right type XXI started taking water near 400 meters.

Went to 161m then went back up when my CE warned me I was going too deep.

You can go quite alot deeper than that, I took a VIIB down to 310 to dodge a depth charge attack before going back up to 180
Don't get me wrong though it's not all smiles and sunshine when going that deep, your hull makes horrible noises, your men tell you your going to deep, guages burst, lights flicker, and all that nasty stuff

Yeah, by mid 43 and onwards the hunter definitely becomes the hunted.

It actually happens earlier but it is not too obvious.

I tried to kill my sub after the sound went haywire in the game. So I thought I would have some fun and crush her. To my surprise, I could not. I ordered the maximum depth and she still did not spring a leak. I even ordered crash dive at this point, and nothing happened. Is there a command to adjust the dive planes?

I just hit the D key and down I go lol, A key to level off. What kind of sub?
I did that with a VIIB in GWX3 in 1940 and it crushed around 350

I just used the Dive command and went from 260 M to 322 M and survived with only some broken bulbs. I didn't want to test my luck any further.

Type IXB

They built those IXB's tough, there my favorite. Though I'm using a VIIB stock at the moment.
Just hit a convoy, took out the lead DD (Black swan) in one hit from 2200m with a medium speed t1 set on magnetic pistol, running about a foot to shallow.
It stopped it dead in the water till it sunk ten min later.
I hit some more large ships but ran into the other DD and was forced down to the depths. I stayed around 140-200m for 2 and a half hours.
That was the longest a single DD held me up, especaily so early in the war.
That damned pipe hissed for hours..

Also im wondering how to post pic's here, I have them in .bmp but not sure from here. I would post in another thread but i see you posted one so if it's simple your help would be appreciated

I normally make about 220m in a VII (unless of course the random crush depth activates in Commander),and normally stay there for 1-2hrs if under attack :yep:

does commander work with GWX3

Yes, but for best results you will also need the additional config files designed specifically for Commander when used with a GWX3 install of the game.

Get Commander here:

http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/downloads.php?do=file&id=733

and the config files installer here:

Just had to ask, so somebody without those mods doesn't try, and die.

The unmodded absolute maximum depth of a IXB, if all the dice rolls are favorable is 216 meters. One usualy does not get that far before crushing.

I know iv'e gone deeper than that, I only recently modded my SH3.
I can't recall what kind of type IX it was, but im pretty sure it was a IXB.

Though it was only the XXI that I had past 300m, and like I said I only held it for the time it took to smoke a ciggarette. I do alot of battle drills, keeps your mind sharp.

Last night I took my Type IX down to about 220m after getting pounded pretty good. Deck gun was out, attack scope out, obs scope damaged, bow flooding in forward two compartments.

I was surprised it took the depth.

Running GWX3.

may I ask if you experienced any losses of performance after you installed the NI-mod?
I'm afraid my old rig won't run it ......

you know the only thing i experienced (which i believe to be caused by a fix for a mod i dont have) was my obs. scope up/down got switched with periscope up/down.

I use an hp laptop (usually on the verge of melting) with an amd sepron (lol $#it) and an integrated vid card. the only thing good in this peice is 4 gb of ram i dropped in. It runs my modded sh3 with GWX3, Commander and the new interior mod very well. The only sluggish performance is when something close explodes (Big explosions) and time compression at high speeds (and thats been happened since gwx3, so im my opinion you should get it)

Just swapped out the hull pressure sounds with some that sound a lot better, You hear pipes bursting, Bolts flying around and moaning sounds from the hull buckling.

If anyone has links to more sound files please post them. (I already went through all the files in the downloads section)
