View Full Version : Newb looking for help with mods for SH4
No wait, no I didn't double post. For some reason it's showing the posts in reverse order when I look at the thread, and I thought I'd reposted my opening post at the bottom. Clearly, I am a mupp.

WELCOME ABOARD!:sunny:
And this is the perfect forum forum for that question.
If you're playing the Pacific fleet boats, your choices are RFB (Real Fleet Boat), TMO (Trigger Maru Overhauled) and GFO (Game Fixes Only). Also with any of them you'll want the Run Silent, Run Deep (RSRD) campaign, which makes a much more realistic experience for any of the above supermods. At the SH4 Fleet Boat Mods Workshop forum (right next door http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/forumdisplay.php?f=219 ) you'll find threads for all of them, and more.
For the Atlantic you have Operation Monsun and its graphics add-on OMEGU. Its thread is on the ATO (Atlantic Theater of Operations) Mods forum http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/forumdisplay.php?f=234.
Also check out the regular SH4 U-Boats forum http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/forumdisplay.php?f=232.
And don't forget to ask lots of questions!:D
Thanks for the info and the welcome, I shall round those mods up right away. :D
And speaking of questions, here's a few that spring to mind. :hmmm:
Are there any massive and immediate pitfalls I need to watch out for with modding this thing? I tend to install mods for most games I play so I've learned to be wary of such things. Like for example are there some mods that don't play nicely with others? Is there a mod-loader program? Does it matter what order they are installed in? Do mods tend to over-write game data or do they tend to be independent of the core files?
Thanks muchly again.

Welcome abroad the boat mate. :salute:
Good advice from Sailor Steve. :yeah: :know:
Also check out Fall of the Rising Sun, FORTS 1.3
All the big mods improve graphics and and game play except GFO.
As to your question, you install mods with JSGME. you run that first, can also find it in the mods section.
Just follow the instructions. All the big mods will tell you which other mods or patched you need.
RSRD is the only super mod that will run with other super mods, there is a list as to which to run.

:yep: I completely forgot to mention JoneSoft Generic Mod Enabler!:damn:
Not only will it load the mods for you and make them easy to remove if you change your mind, but it will warn you if a mod will change something in a mod already installed, which lets you decide (or ask somebody here) if that will work or not.
All-in-all the most important tool for gaming. Period.

Thanks again for the help, I'm glad to see there's a mod-handling program in there because manually fiddling with these things makes me pray for death. :D

It's true memory was the second thing to go.
Can't remember what the first was though. :know: :haha:

Is it normal to have problems running SH4 with mods on Steam by the way? SH4 on steam has always been very unreliable for me, not properly installing, then losing files and having to redownload them and verify and so forth, so I'm a little worried that it might be unmoddable as it's not working at all with the fleetboat mod and RSRD campaign modded in with the mod thingy.

i always find a hard copy, too many issues with steam once. However it shouldn't cause problems loading mods if your original game works.
Well the original game doesn't always work, so I've written it off as too flaky to mod. Have got the disk version installed now.
Next question, I have got Real Fleet Boat working, as the game makes it pretty obvious by telling me, often. However I've not found any indication that the Run Silent Run Deep campaign is running. How will I know if it is working? When I went to the start new campaign screen there was nothing specific relating to it. The mod installer says it's in there though and I installed it after the first mod, so it should have precedence.
Is it one of those mods that is there, but doesn't say as much, and thus I'll only see it when I start playing the campaign? :hmmm:

Hovis Been a long time since I used RSRD but I seem to remember that it has a load screen if it's loaded right.

I have nothing on my loading screen that shows RSRD, but I run TMO also, so don't know if it would be different, but it shouldn't.
You can easily tell a difference. RSRD has many more map labels than stock, harbors and ports you can refit in. I know Truk isn't included in the stock game, so look for that. If you don't have it, then RSRD isn't loaded.
RSRD list a lot more historical areas of war, such as in the Solomons for all the ship traffic, you'll notice a big difference in the map.
