Hello everyone! First post here on subsim forums.

After seeing "Das Boot" and "The hunt for red oktober", I really started to like submarines. When I found out that a submarine simulator existed, I went crazy.

So, what game in the series should I play? Which one of the "Silent hunter" games are the best one? Ive heard that SH5 is buggy and almost unplayable.

Hi and welcome!
SH3 with the Grey Wolves eXpansion mod is pretty much the best, still being modded to this day and a must play! Then there's the SH4 in the Pacific Theater (US submarines) or if you prefer the atlantic, the Operation Monsun mod. (as we speak I'm actually reinstalling SH3 myself) And then there's of course SH5 which, plain sux

I'm sure the children will be out in force in this thread. Try not to trip over the hyperbole and proclamations of doom. :03:

I wouldn't say SH5 is unplayable. It's still in it's growing stages - many minor bugs, but nothing absolutely and completely game breaking. SH5 has been out for just under a month. People are still getting their hands around modding and working with it. Down the line it may be one of the greats, but right now it's rough around the edges. I'd go with SH3 and the GWX mod for it, if I were you. It's a polished and finished product after 5 years. It's got its flaws - no wolfpacks, fussy save game system - but it's the way to go at this point.

This is must read thread if you are interestid about real submarines. http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=147577

It's about US fleet boats but contains some interesting info about u-boats aswell.

Depends how new your SH3 disc is
All later versions come patched to 1.4
When you start the game will say version number in botton left ( ? ) hand corner

SH4 patches check the Ubi site but to use Op monsoon you will need patch 1.5 which was the Uboat missions addon disc

Order them over the internet at places such as Amazon, Play.com or Steam etc..

But i would suggest you to play SH3 then SH4, then SH5. Only because the graphics improve in each title and if you start on SH5 it may be difficult to get into the earlier games based on appearances - which of course are highly deceiving!

If you haven't bought them yet, then you are in luck. The new versions of SH3 come fully patched, and for SH4 make sure you get SH4 GOLD. It is fully patched and includes the U-boat missions add-on. Then all you need to do is play for awhile, then try out the supermods.

And the smaller mods.

And the newest mods.

Oh, and WELCOME ABOARD!:sunny:

Lol. You really are new to the sub sim scene! :)

Sh3 or SH4 can last you thousands and thousands of hours depending on how into it or involved you are. Some people play patrols in real time which can take months. Tedchnically, I suppose, the end of the game is the end of the war but thats not really the point as you will discover.

If I may recommend another movie: get 'Run Silent Run Deep' which is set in the Pacific. Great film.

Welcome to the forums and never be afraid to ask what might seem like a silly question. I can guarantee every one on this board have probably asked something that seemed as silly at some point - some of us still do.

BTW I played SH4 from it's publishing to last sunday when my Corsair TX750W PSU filed for divorce. :wah:

When I had a computer capable of handling SH3, I played two or three hours a day. When I returned from patrol, I would take a week or so off "to enjoy my time in port." The war goes on and on. :DL

I prefer SH3. SH4, especially with the U-Boat add-on, doesn't perform well on, "modest" equipment. I was using a 2.4 GHz dual-core Athlon, 4G memory, 7200 RPM HD, and a 512MB nVidia 7600GT. I've since replaced the 7600 with a 1G GTS250, but haven't tried it with anything other than the disappointing/disheartening SH5. Like, "someone else" on this thread, I'm about to reinstall my old copy of SH4. Will it work with Windows 7 64? Does anyone know if there'll be problems?

"Modest" equipment, eh? I play it (when I can) on a five-year-old Pentium 4 3GHz single-core machine with 2 Gigs of RAM and a 256 card (upgraded from the original ATI 128). With both cards it runs very poorly, and that's with all the graphics stuff turned off! That said, I still played it right up to the day my computer went into storage - 8 FPS and all.

As understatements go, it's very poor, as it's accurate in that there is nothing absolutely and completely game breaking.

No pun intended, I cannot judge it for myself.

I'm reading all kind of experiences about SH5 and I'm trying to keep
a fair mind about the game.

Having said this, I find it hard to say that all the so far discovered issue's aren't game braking.
It would definitely spoil my joy over any game when I would encounter so many 'minor' bugs.
And that would be game breaking experience for me.

My suggestion would be for a beginning SH player:
Start with SH3 and when the time is there, proceed with SH4.
From there, read as many reviews possible about SH5 and decide for yourself if you are going to try SH5.

SH4 vanilla works in Win 7 64 bits. However installing process seem to randomly fail without explanation. Another attempt should fix it if not try compatibility mode Windows XP SP2.

EDIT: I have not tested it with mods yet but I don't believe that mods will break it.

Negativity spreads, that's a fact. Some people have a perverse definition of 'game breaking', for example. ZOMG The captin's hat is on at the wrong angle! Kriegsmarine officiers were required to wear their hats at 0.751 degrees, but in game it's clear that the hats are at 0.752 degrees!?!?!?!??!?!?!?!??! How can UBI not kill everyone that ever worked for them and all of their families and all their friends?!?!?!???! I would kill them all if they worked for me!?!?!?!??! for this ATTROCITY! This GAME IS RUINED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!?!?!??!?!? !??!?!?!?

There are of course more extreme examples over even smaller stuff, with even less control over grammar and punctuation.

Enjoyment of game = Quality of game * ( 1 - probability of throwing toys out of pram for minor issues)

To quote Brass Eye, there's no real evidence for it, but it is scientific fact.

For clarity: Yes, I know they are called 'caps'. Just like that lock I see often.

IanC
03-27-10, 05:46 PM
For the pacific theater I recommend SH1, although I admit I only played stock SH4, maybe a fully super modded SH4 blows the doors off SH1, I dunno.
For the Atlantic it would be SH3 GWX or Aces of the Deep.

I see what you mean, but the issues I was thinking of are more in the
direction of strange AI actions in several situations,
targeting problems, FPS issues, crew moral, lack of damage control etc.

Those would be game braking issues (to me).

Historical incorrectness would be less disturbing for me, as long as it would
be kept into proportions (no GPS or cruise missiles please).

Welcome aboard Wokker!

As other posters have suggested, SH3 may be the place to start, you can pick it up very cheap these days. It has five years worth of mods behind it as well, which definitely helps. SH4 is also worth a look if you happen to like US Fleet Boats, and likewise has been heavily modded.

Don't believe everything you read about SH5 though, certainly it has it's fair share of problems, and is currently quite rough around the edges in places, but it's nowhere near the diabolical failure some are claiming it to be. The net requirement is a bone of contention with many, myself included, but aside from this the game is still enjoyable (in my opinion).

By the time you have yourself well acquainted with the series, SH5 will probably have received several patches, and possibly the first of the super mods. I suspect you might want to take a look at it by that time.

Other than that, enjoy the game!

SHIV gets very old very quickly.
Ops monsoon fixes the german campaigns* but the airplanes see you at 500 feet and attack.
RSRDC fixes American campaigns

*So bug ridden:
Endless patrols of nowhere.
No enemy ships.
There was more but I forgot

All in all, do research into SHV,
If you're picky and think tiny bugs are too much to handle, don't get it.
Stay away from SHIV, baaaaad

I don't know about newbie tutorial but in SHIV forums there is good manual targeting tutorial guide/video based on tutorial mission available in game.

In general I would recommend to visit SUBSIM Radioroom's SHIV forum.

EDIT: Game tutorials tell you how to make basic things in easy settings. Ie no manual targeting etc. for those visit in forums.

A lot of the complaints about SH5, stem from the fact a fair bit was omitted that had been present in previous versions, and some folks started behaving like chicken little because x, y, z was no longer available without modding. The game does have problems, just as all the games in the series have had at launch, but is still enjoyable in its own right.

Should you choose to start with either 3 or 4 I should warn you about trying the larger mods as a beginner, they tend to focus on adding greater realism and offering a more accurate historical perspective, and for that reason offer considerably greater challenge than either title run in vanilla, potentially, far too much for someone new to the genre. A slap for everyone who didn't consider this before suggesting a super mod to a new comer.

I would suggest trying whatever title you buy without applying any of the larger balance altering mods at first, then, once you are comfortable with the core concepts and ready for more challenge, start ramping things up with the super mods.
