View Full Version : Enemy Sub... LOLz (pic heavy)
Patrolling south of Crete in "Mare Nostrum" Campaign....
Came across an enemy submarine on the surface mid-day. Fired a few deck gun shots, but only scored 1 hit before he submerged. I found his periscope and followed him for awhile on the surface... then i remembered i had external camera enabled. So i sumbered and started toying around with him.
Normally I dont have that option turned on, but luckily i had it this time because what followed was pretty funny.
Didn't start capturing screens till after about 5 hours of following him.
I kept hoping he'd surface but instead he just dove to almost 100m and ran like hell......

interesting.
But if you catch an enemy submarine on the surface, it will submerge?
In Sh4, you could only add them as surface targets.
Has anyone been torpedoed yet by an enemy submarine? would love to see screens of that, especially if you can see the wakes of the incoming torps.
This is like the sixth enemy sub i've killed so far
(Note: while it gives you credit in your event list.. it doesn't register in the kills for this patrol area to the right nor do you get any tonnage from it).
Normally one of 2 things happens.
1. I get enough shots into him before he submerges that he sinks.
2. He submerges before i can shoot... and will tool around at periscpe depth. If you race to his last known location you can usually spot his periscope and follow em around for abit. After like 5-10 minutes he'll surface again and i shoot em out of the water.
This time though, i got a shot on him before he submerged.. so i think thats why he never resurfaced. So i decided to dive down and follow em till he surfaced again. But he just kept going till he ran out of battery.

Pretty funny I havent even seen an enemy sub.
Shame the shots are so dark but I guess you cant help that.

Lucky for you he didn't have external views. One of these days you'll get yours back, you slimy sub-crusher you!
:rotfl2::rock:
Imagine the enemy chief trying to explain to the captain whats happening to the sub!
So the crushdepth was greater on your sub?
Amazing story!

Not true. You can easily add them as submerged in SH4 and SH3.

Strange...
The german uboats were good submarines which tolerate high depth.
The british U class have maximum depth... 60 meters, and on these pictures more more deeper than 60 meters...

I can just imagine the talk in their command room now.
"Sir they're............sitting on us!"
Haha, I'm still yet to encounter any enemy subs in game! Last time I came across an enemy sub was in SH1!!!!!

Why didn't you fire at it?

Tehehehe! Got a giggle. :D I'm surprised it gave you credit for that. I suppose ramming has now become a legitimate form of combat, at least for BdU...

I got 1 round in 'em with the deckgun before he submerged, thats why.
Why didn't you fire at it?
If you are talking about shooting a torpedo.. you cant fire torpedo's past around ~30m depth. Dont think the inner torpedo doors can take the pressure.
But even if i could.. once i got the necessary arming distance away, i wouldn't be able to see him through the murk. Then there's the whole issue of torpedo running depth.
it's just not pratcial

It's like watching a good high speed chase... without the high speed, and taking hours instead of minutes. :DL
This thread goes good with my sig.... except maybe the silent part, but definitely running deep, running them ragged, and not letting them sleep.
What should the final tactic be called?
The Persistent Submersible Bumper Cars maneuver?
Or the Delayed Davey Jones' Locker Express Tour Arrangement maneuver? :arrgh!:
Or the formation of Demolition Derby fan groups made up of merfolk? :hmmm:
Overall, I like the captions tossed onto the screen shots, it is a very amusing and entertaining subject.

It's not a problem of doors but of how the launch system was engineered.
It used compressed air to push a piston behind the torpedo. If the outside pressure was too high the air wouldn't expand pushing the piston and, in turn, the torpedo out of the tube.
The piston arrangement, while heavy (each time the torpedo tube was reloaded, the piston had to be removed first) allowed the submarine to release the missile without creating a massive bubble of air escaping the tube, giving away the boat position on the surface.
I think on type XXI this arrangement was dropped in favor of water ramming the torpedo out of the tube. (But I'm not sure if this arrangement was experimental or used on all the boats). This allowed the submarine to fire torpedoes at any depth regardless of the external pressure.

:hmmm:
Where did you read that?
The larger S and enormous T class boats could do about 90m no problem and they had a dodgy Oval shaped pressure hull - to accomadete the 6 internal fore tubes.
Afaik the U class had a more sturdy 'cylinderical' hull like a U-boat
I guess th S and T class would have been far more vunerable to DC attacks....

That is the observation scope from "More Realistic Periscopes". (early version of it).
