Hey everyone :yeah:!!

I've recently downloaded RFB and I'm loving it !!

Just as a quick annecdote, I messed around with the training missions to try out the interface, and thought I was ready for my campaign using RFB/RSRD :

After my first assigment, I went on a reconnaissance mission in a harbor (forgot the name, but its on near Luzon), and on the way there (about 10 minutes after having started playing), my crew spotted a plane, and thinking I was close to the home port and it was probably a friend, didn't bother diving. Before I knew what was going on, a Japanese bomber dropped his load straight on top of my sub and flew away. Helpless as I was, I soon realized my sub was going down... like a rock...

After damage report, and a quick nip in the external view... I noticed the two huge impacts which had completely obliterated half of my hull :damn: and showing off that beautiful machinery (I'm guessing the ice cream machine ). Needless to say, I couldn't do anything, but I was still very impressed with the improved damage system!!

Guess I'll be more carefull next time :D.

Anyway, that is not what I'm here for. The issue is that I seem to be experiencing ocasional and un-explained jerkyness in SH4, which seems to have a bigger impact now with RFB. Although I don't have a clue what can be causing the problem, the symptoms are basically that the game runs smoothly, but ocasionally, after switching between stations, the game will go into really slow mode ( < 20 FPS ) for no reason. The only way I have found to get it back on track is to make the camera go crazy, and go over and under water several times til it goes back to 60 frames and more. Note that when this happens, all 3D views (not the maps) are affected equally, as if the framerate was clamped for a short period of time.

I run it in 1280x800, with all options activated (with some tweaks on the harbor objects, particles and LODing since I spent most of my time "indoors", or at sea. I have tried lowering the settings, but it does not seem to affect my issue.

It is getting really frustrating since it happens randomly, and can really break the atmosphere (I'd rather have it run slow all the time, than going from 60 frames to 10 frames in a matter of seconds)

I highly doubt my desktop is the reason for this, it is not the best of the best, but should be fairly sufficient for a game like SH4. Here are the specs, would you want to know : Intel Dual Core 2.2Ghz, 2 x Geforce 9800GX+ (SLI), 2048 MB of RAM.

Like I said, the game runs smoothly most of the time, but every now and then (like every 10 minutes or so, if not less), it goes into slow mode. I do not have any antiviruses, or softwares running in the background, since my computer is not connected to the internet, so I'm guessing its coming from SH4.

Has any of you experienced that problem? If so, how did you fix it?

Thanks in advance :arrgh!:!!

What do you mean by you have tweaks...something you did yourself and have you tried it without?

Have you tried the nHancer settings in the nvidia sticky above?

I just went through something close, believe it or not it was my sounddriver. I don't know how it happened, all up to date, but I lagged down to nothing inside the sub. Outside the sub things were just slower.
My son had messed with files. What was strange when I uninstalled the sound driver and rebooted and checked devices somehow it did something to my video drivers. Once I installed the new sound drivers, the video drivers came back...wierd. Doubt that's you, but I spent days going mad over it..

All your drivers up to date, ect...

Any other mods...?

I get the stutter as well with RFB 2.0. Seems a bit random and hard to nail down.

I have experienced this issue two - three times as well, a slight horozontal twitch or jerkyness as you say. I'm playing TMO so I don't think it is Mod related. Could be when you get a veiw topside after coming out of T/C in proximity to something. Yeah I know that doesn't help realy but it's a rare visual glitch.

Hey again !!

Thank you very much for your replies. When I meant tweaking, I meant I had custom graphical settings, with all checkboxes activates, and a few sliders lowered down (e.g. the Terrain LOD and detail, as well as particles ).

I did have a look at the Nvidia tweaks already, but unfortunately, I had already done some tweaking on my graphics card prior to this, and even with the suggested settings on, I am still experiencing the problem.

Now, as Armistead suggested, it could be the sound; I do have a poor Realtech chip, and did not really think about that when setting the sound options, I might want to lower the settings a bit, and see how it goes.

I have also read somewhere, that dual cores can be quite problematic with SHIV (I'm guessing it was not developped for that generation, or at least does not handle it very well), so I might have a go at forcing it onto one of the core (I am not sure about that, but I'm thinking there might be synchronisation problems when using two cores ).

Anyway, I'll let you know as soon as I had time to try it out :D!! Thanks again

I've been fighting this issue as well. My system is AMD 2.4 with 1G Ram and GeForce 7800GSOC AGP.

I didn't have the slow downs until I updated my video driver to NVidia version 6.14.11.9621.

I have found the fastest way to reset the frame rate is to Alt-Tab out to the desktop and then click back on SH4 that is running. For some reason, NVidia wanted to slow down the video chip to save power when it wasn't all needed. However, your frame rate suffers by doing that. The switch out and back in seems to make it go fast again. Later, I'll be checking to see if they have released another newer driver that hopefully fixes this.

Generally alt-tabing in SH4 isn't a good idea, especially in RFB. Whenever I do it I get submersible watch crew.

The down clocking you're talking about is related to laptop GPU-s, not desktop ones IIRC...

Yea, alt/tab can cause lots of little bugs. I think we all sometimes get a lil jerky water, fast water, ect.

Usually you can clear any jerkiness by using control N while at the external cam..it's the sonar key, but it resets the screen. Also resets the weather, so don't do it when ships are near.
