Following the recent temporary game server outages which may have caused disruption to some Silent Hunter 5 players on PC only, we would like to reward your patience if you have experienced any problems by offerring you a full downloadable game from the list provided below, completely free of charge.
Shaun White Snowboarding or
Prince of Persia
Unfortunately not interested in either. Would have been nice if I had been offered Settlers 7!!

Prince of Persia is a pretty good game but which version?
I havent seen this email yet.

Pfft! There not gonna give you a game that also has the DRM. That would lead to an infinite circle of compensation.

Snowboarding? Prince of Persia? I suspect they are giving them away, because they are not worth selling!

Naah, they just figured that those kind of games would be liked by people
who by other "Action-Adventure" games like SH5.
Seriously tho, at least it's somewhat better than a ship skin...right?
It may not be worth much to most subsimmers, but at least it has some actual value.

Being able to play the game you bought in the first place, would be a far better gift.

This is getting ridiculous. I have tried to download PoP about 2 dozen times. Sometimes it makes it to the first screen with the download button and sometimes it makes it to the next screen but it always ends with the blasted "Internal Server Error". But I guess it's worth a few laughs.
By the way, the game appears to be the latest version, the graphics look pretty good.

"Thank you for buying Silent Hunter 5 (that was released to early) and we are sorry you couldn't play because our servers couldn't handle the load and/or was not protected enough against DoS attacks but here is a free game (maybe without online DRM) that you can enjoy!"
Eh I want to enjoy Silent Hunter 5 not some old game that they don't think is worthy of selling anymore...
That was my reaction reading the e-mail anyway.

I'm having a hard time trying to decide why I want to puch Shaun White in the face. Is it because he looks like Carrot Top or is it that he can't seem to wear a shirt without it being half unbuttoned, revealing his femmy hairless chest? At the end of the day I'm probably just jealous. :)

* please don't label someone who wants SH as realistic as possible "AC2 crowd"
This Dutch gamers site (reliable) states that gamers that own AC2 or SH5 and weren't able to play the game because of DRM failure will get a free game for UBI as compensation for the flawed service.
You can read the article here (http://www.gamer.nl/nieuws/57269/bezitters-assassins-creed-2-krijgen-gratis-game-voor-downtime)
Seems that the offered games differ from person to person but games named are: Prince of Persia, EndWar, HAWX en Shaun White's Snowboarding. Notification seems to come by mail.....

For some reason, even though all these threads relate specifically to Silent Hunter 5 are being moved to General Game discussions. *shrug* Meanwhile DRM rants live on, whee!
I also haven't seen any Silent Hunter 5 player that was offered anything more than a stupid snowboarding game and PoP though.
While some AC players did get the 4 military game offer, others were offered just DLC from the "special editions".

With a 10GB monthly download limit on my broadband, which is already stretched to the limits, I'll have my free game downloaded by about Christmas, I think!
I feel the choices are poor in comparison with those offered to AC2 players, but having played a lot of Tomb Raiders over the years - but no Prince of Persia games - it's about time I tried one, so it's fairly welcome. Not so interested in snowboarding but looks like it's a kind of 'MMO' snowboarding game from the blurb on the site, with all your friends present in the same world if they're online (though I don't have any friends with that game!), so will at least give it a look before I commit. Maybe those that pick it can make a Subsim group and hit the slopes together ;)

Is Ubisoft now run by Dunder Mifflin/Sabre (the Office)? I swear that a sitcom writer could not have come up with better material than this. No way.

CAUTION!!! The "Official Site" links for the games on offer do not take you to the correct websites for the games.
The pages from the Ubisoft e-mail are here:
http://princeofpersia.gamesplanet.com/prince-of-persia-game-ubisoft.html?affilie=newsusersac2sh5
http://shaunwhite.gamesplanet.com/shaun-white-snowboarding-game-ubisoft.html?affilie=newsusersac2sh5
Both have an "Official Site" link in the lower-right of the page, taking you to these two places respectively (for me in the UK, at least):
http://prince-of-persia.uk.ubi.com/
http://shaunwhitegame2.uk.ubi.com/
However, the features and styles of the games there didn't quite match those on the download pages linked to by the e-mail.
A short investigation concluded that the two sites above are for the newer versions of these two games, namely "Prince of Persia: The Forgotten Sands" and "Shaun White Snowboarding 2" - NOT the games on offer.
So if you're looking to get some info on these two games from Ubisoft's site before picking which one to download, think again! :har:
Even if you go to www.ubi.com (http://www.ubi.com) and browse their games on the main page, and click through to the "Official Site", the same problem exists. Very smart!

Unfortunately, the customers of the Black-Edition get no benefit from it, because they already have the bonus items purchased with their Black-Edition and now get them for the second time, but now as a gift:timeout:

I cant get it to work eather, it says "You payment has not been accepted", even though it accepted my promotion code.
Shows the type of gamer they expected to snap up SH5 by the choice of offered game ;)
Seriously it's a bit idiotic of them. If anything they should refund everyone's money who paid for SH5. I'm beginning to wonder whether it being released like it has been was just to test the DRM before AC2 came out. They probably thought " hey, these losers will buy the game anyway as no other sub games around and so we can test our DRM servers before the real customers buy up Assassins Creed!".
The thing is even with this 'offer' UBI has been coldly calculating, reasoning that they can give away these games to simulation fans knowing that they most likely wouldn't have bought them anyway so no lost sale! This goes the same for AC2 fans being offered two air combat games and an RTS! What a bunch of F---rs!

OK, I've tried to download Prince of Persia ten times and it tells me that my payment was not accepted... when I use the code they supplied me... Is this seriously some way for them to trick us into spending more money on their crap? "Ooo, a free game. Crap, the code doesn't work, but now I really want the game. I guess I'll just buy it."
It boggles my mind how stunningly inept this company continues to be.
Has anyone else had this issue and worked through it?
Heh, i didn't even get a code...mail only says "when prompted" where the code should be :damn:
Here they trie to compensate for errors with the DRM and they can't do that right either. Makes me wonder if there are amateurs doing a pro's work.

I can't quite understand why so many people are so exited about that "free game" by UBI!
Seriously, you paid a lot of money for a subsim, nothing else. UBI knew they were releasing a crappy game that contains more bugs than you could ever see in Starship Troopers, but they still delivered it that way. Few weeks later, after realizing that almost everyone is up against them, they try to bribe you by giving you a "free game of your choice". A choice of only two games by the way, which cost no more than a few bucks anyway and have nothing to do with a simulation / WW2 or are in any way related to SHV.
This is nothing else but a bribe and a quite bad one too. After all, you paid a lot of money and get one game that doesn't work and another one that you don't want.

Well, downloaded the snowboarding game because I dont have any sportsgames and thought it would be nice to experience some different action.
But no such luck, turns out I cannot play the game om my win 7 64 bit OS, cannot get through the activation phase. Oh, of course Ubi did not release a patch for this. (yes I tried compatibilty modes).
I know on the website it says for XP/Vista but what would you expect from a 2008 game. Most older games I have run just fine on win 7. Would be nice if they stated specificaly that it won't run on 7...
Now, stupid me, I installed the game om my XP laptop to check if the download was okay and was able to play it on my laptop but it's not poweful enough to run it smooth. So now I activated the game and used the offer but will never be able to enjoy it.

Think of it this way: Imagine going into a restaurant and getting a really poor meal...so the Manager comes over to your table to try to resolve the issue and offers you a "free" desert. Pretty nice, Huh?
...Now imagine that when the "free" desert arrives at your table that you find it is actually a leftover from somebody elses meal that the restaurant saved from the previous nights scraps. :o
...Even worse, you learn that the table next to you, who spent just as much as you did, gets a larger choice of leftovers to choose from and some of their choices are still somewhat fresh, albiet still leftovers. :o:o
Should you be happy to get 2nd choice scraps, or would it just make more sense to eat elsewhere in the future...knowing that the management just screwed you not once, but twice...and fully expected you to be grateful for the experience? :hmmm:

Well the shaft or not we did just get free stuff from ubisoft. Most other companies would send us an email simply saying "sorry" and go F@$& yourselves.
Even if its a ploy the make us happy...it shows they care. they fixed the servers, they didn't have to give us anything...but they did. and that was nice of them
and besides my mommy told me not to look a gifthorse in the mouth ;)
...it shows they care.
It shows they are desperate more like. For a company that has just created such a DRM in order to stop even one copy being pirated, to then give away it's products shows that they really are in the ****. They don't give a rats about SH5 customers, they just want to sweeten the image of their company as they know that Splinter Cell Conviction and Settlers 7 are coming out next with the same DRM crap and they want to encourage as many as they can to give their fun DRM a go and buy their games with the psychology of 'well if it doesn't work that well, I'll get a free game anyway' instilled in the potential customer.

The Thing is piracy is a big problem today, more so then when SH3 came out and possibly even more than when SH4 was released . Furthermore the only reason those servers went down was because of a malicious attack on them by hackers. This was by no means UBI's fault so for them to apologize for one and a half days of having my game out by giving me 30 bucks worth of free stuff...id say that's a good deal to me.

Of course they need to fix the game with more patches , but as others have said some companies would have either ignored the problem or sent an email saying sorry.
A free game , ok not a great choice , but its better than a poke in the eye with a jaggy stick.

I once was of your opinion, but I have had quite a time looking at this from different perspectives by now. Pirating does damage, and costs sales. As does shoplifting. But the recent decade is just too full of example of small start-up studios and developers that land a "first-try superhit". Why? Because they deliver a highly valuable, product, and one that customers want (satisfies their wishes, ideas etc, and is novel, not just copy of an old game idea/concept with new eye-candy), instead of delivering something "that a company wants to sell" and is developed orthogonally to market/customer interests. And they didn't die of piracy, but actually customers voluntarily buy their products, and pay the money. Sales are high, that is why it is a superhit. Let me elaborate further.
And to do so, I will pull up the counter example of companies like Microprose that went away long before piracy and downloads were developed (to this extend, or at all). Hence, you cannot claim piracy as primary cause for their end. But what you will find if you think about their fate, is for one that their casual products did not succeed in the broad market (for many reasons), and their specialized nice-products (like a sub simulator) didn't generate enough revenue. That is what it is, and if you get into the business of developing a niche-product, you can't expect to be a millionaire in no time, if at all.
Now, there is also a second class of examples, and that is companies that just warmed up game ideas time after time, and didn't spice the product up enough. To make it enticing. Say "Sid Meiers Gettysburg" was a successful game, but the sequel "Antietam" ended the series -- why? I guess it was but a new map, and everything else was just the same. And there is many examples of that class, maybe even the two points I mentioned above are just two symptoms of exactly this issue here.
And that was even before the times of harsh DRM or OSP-DRM, which now add a very bitter taste to everything particularly for legal owners, and induce them to see minor flaws of a product in a darker light then without. (EDIT: ) Moreover, the entertainment business has been expanding at a much faster rate than population growth or wealth ("money") increase. Each entertainment sector, movies, games, music, books, and real-life from sports to paintball, has grown strongly over the last 10-20 years. But since the consumer are limited (in number, their free time and money), every company and product will naturally get a smaller piece of cake every year and will have to present much better than average "products" to expand.
So I begin to think, and I bet with the SHV disaster it could have proven clearly this time if the pirates had for once stayed out of this, that it is the companies failing to bind customers by delivering "novel" games, added-value products (a thick printed manual, and other thing that you can't download on a site) and better service!
I think SHV would be a premier example of a product developed tangentially to what the community had hoped for (see Neals review), and that is why there is so much outcry and disappointment. And this may turn into lack of commercial success, and the consequences. I think Ubisoft may have done more harm with a repeated buggy release and the OSP-DRM to its own sales than the pirates could have.
Unfortunately I have as little credible and unambiguous evidence for my hyothesis as you do have for yours, so it's not worth arguing about anything that we can't change either opinions on. But I want to put it out there as a possibility that may be worth thinking critically about, and not focus on one possibility and ignore all the others (thats why the world is round...).
The future will likely teach how bad piracy really is, or whether companies are actually harming themselves more by not treating the customers as kings.

Hello,
re Gimpy117:
well the word "pirate" is certainly a bit hard, certainly wanted and intended to sound that way (t'was Microsoft b.t.w. who invented this word - and i still wonder whether so much people would have XP and 7 on their PCs, had they not tried out pirated versions of Windows 3.11 earlier in thei life). But then isn't the impossibility of using the paid-for product with its promised properties at all, also a criminal offense, or even theft, if we are being consequent for both sides ?
Seems there are also pirates in the companies, don't you think so ?
As well in this brave new world doublespeak there are the consumers (read parasites, not creating anything but just consuming) and the noble producers (positively occupied, creating something, god-like).
As i read elsewhere:
The statement "This product is not eligible for refunds" in UBI's adverts or terms of sale for this particular product, is in fact a breach of UK and Germany's consumer rights and laws.
It is also in breach of The Sales of Goods Act 1979 where it is an implied term of warranty that a product must be of satisfactory quality, therefore allowing the consumer a period of satisfactory enjoyment of a product. A product is not of satisfactory quality, when the consumer is not able to to enjoy the product or is not satisfied with the quality of the product - in this case ingame quality and functionality, and externally the broken-down servers so not being able to use this software.
It slso seems that the UBIsoft server downtime, or better system overload was indeed UBI's responsability, and no DDOS attack, at least as it is published in Tom's Hardware guide article on that matter.
I already suspected UBI's servers that are causing the issue; UBI said it itself before changing their mind some days later, boy this was so obvious what was going on.
This alone, without all other bugs and being inferior to earlier versions of the product, means the product is not of satisfactory quality. Under warranty laws the seller must refund the consumer the full value of the product.
From the UBI forum:
" ... So i suggest to UBI to remove the statement that states the product is not eligible for refund forthwith and that you start refunding people in full too. Otherwise, consumers will and do have the right to make claims against you, in the UK's small claims courts, for breach of warranty, breach of the sales of goods act as well as breach of the consumer protection unfair trading regulations act 2008, for imposing a term of sale that is in breach of consumers satutory rights.
[...]
Restrictive statements such as 'This Product is not eligible for Refunds' or for example 'Sold as seen', are classed as a criminal offence, so UBI may face criminal prosecution aswell as civil court claims.
Where the product is not of satisfactory quality, the seller has no choice but to refund the buyer, regardless of weather its DVD, CD's Underwear, software or 'engraved' jewellery. "
Returning the product and getting the money back holds no perils at all.
And again, the simple "every downloaded pirated game is a lost customer" does not wash. But we had this ad nauseum, therefore even i am getting tired by posting the same again and again :nope:
Greetings,
Catfish

Yeah...piracy is so big that almost all the top selling games have been 'pirated' supposedly, while the uncrackable Assassins Creed 2 languishes far behind. The Anti Pirate Brigades and publishers have stated often that piracy=lost sales, so with Assassins Creed 2 we can finally put that to the test. Since the first AC was pirated a million times, then shouldn't ASSCreed2 have sold at least as many by now, since the pirates would have bought it?

I don't dispute the accuracy of the links in the e-mail. But for anybody wanting to find out any additional information (given how little is on the download pages), there is a problem with all the other links!
Your link above gives no more information than the download page that you get to from the e-mail. Yes, it contains some info on the story and the features, but not enough for me to really get an understanding of what the game is like.
Why do you say it is irrelevant if the link on that page takes you 'elsewhere' (i.e. the wrong place)? The link says "Official Site", which should take you to the game's official site, no? It does take you to a Prince of Persia site, but not the right one, hence it's very misleading!
So, when you click the link in the e-mail, you go here:
http://princeofpersia.gamesplanet.com/prince-of-persia-game-ubisoft.html?affilie=newsusersac2sh5
On this page is a little info, four pathetically small screenshots, and a poor quality video. I want more information to help me decide which game to choose. So, I click on the link circled in the image below:
http://img686.imageshack.us/img686/4007/pop1s.jpg
Where am I taken? Here: http://prince-of-persia.uk.ubi.com/
What is that? The website for the new PoP game, which is due out in May 2010.
Yet you think this is irrelevant? Why? Clearly it's a mistake. Anyway, the digital download is from a website called gamesplanet.com as you can see in the first link. It's not Ubisoft, so let's forgive that error...
So, instead, I go to Ubisoft's site to find the information for the Prince of Persia game that they are actually offering.
On the main site (http://www.ubi.com/UK/default.aspx), I choose the Genre of "Adventure", circled below. Then I have to scroll to the right (past the new "PoP: The Forgotten Sands" game), until I find the correct game. I then click the "Visit the Official Site" link, also circled:
http://img90.imageshack.us/img90/729/pop2s.jpg
And where does it go? Here: http://prince-of-persia.uk.ubi.com/
Which is the same site as before - for the new game. Therefore, I cannot find any proper information on the old PoP game from Ubisoft. Ridiculous. And it's exactly the same situation for Shaun White Snowboarding.
So, please don't tell me that Ubisoft CAN get it right first time. They CANNOT! :nope:
I'm not a Ubisoft basher, and have never said anything against the DRM system (it's not great, but a necessary evil in these days of widespread piracy). I don't jump on the bandwagon when everybody starts laying into Ubisoft's errors and all they have done wrong. But this is a stupid mistake and I wanted to warn others in case they decided to do a little research before choosing their free game.
I also e-mailed Ubisoft to let them know, since how can they fix it if they don't know it's broken?
I'll be off to some other websites to find out about the games - no harm done as far as I'm concerned, but an annoyance all the same. Hope you "know what I'm going on about" now and don't feel the need to defend Ubisoft about it.

:timeout: If you do happen to be a snowboarder (like myself) or just happen to enjoy watching it. DO NOT download Shaun White Snowboarding!!! It is a horribly broken game with horrible mechanics and bad gameplay. I got it for Christmas 08 and haven't played it since.

Is there much of a modding scene for it?

I don't think you'll find too many snowboarding sim enthusiasts.

What if we mounted a deck gun on it?
It is also in breach of The Sales of Goods Act 1979 where it is an implied term of warranty that a product must be of satisfactory quality, therefore allowing the consumer a period of satisfactory enjoyment of a product. A product is not of satisfactory quality, when the consumer is not able to to enjoy the product or is not satisfied with the quality of the product - in this case ingame quality and functionality, and externally the broken-down servers so not being able to use this software.
Good to know, excellent info Catfish! I have always been unsure what I can return here in the US in the past couple of years, but I'll follow that lead a bit and figure out what customer rights here are.
Maybe a bit simplified picture, but as first approximation that would be close. Keep in mind that Ubisoft will probably now claim that the DDOS attacks that they "detected" are similar acts of piracy that lead to bad publicity and lower sales. Means "piracy' beneficials" may not be playing it, but customer stay away.

Can be used the Snow board in the sea with high waves ?? :haha:
OK, I've tried to download Prince of Persia ten times and it tells me that my payment was not accepted... when I use the code they supplied me... Is this seriously some way for them to trick us into spending more money on their crap? "Ooo, a free game. Crap, the code doesn't work, but now I really want the game. I guess I'll just buy it."
It boggles my mind how stunningly inept this company continues to be.
Has anyone else had this issue and worked through it?
Yea, I am getting this as well. Crap!

Well nothing surprises me with Ubi.
When I initially loaded SHV you have to register, yes?. However, UBI says I'm already registered with that email address. Am I? I don't remember ever doing that. Ok. So I ask for a password reminder. It then tells me there's no such account registered with that email address.:damn:

After retrying it a few times I finally got it to go.

I finally got it after about thirty attempts. We'll see if it actually works once it's downloaded.

It is actually not bad compared to any other PC boarding game. I really like the "sandbox" quality of it compared to others.
It does not like CPUs with Hyperthreading. Alot of people have had to disable it in the bios to get the game to run. Real PITA but the only major bug I have seen. It is apparently a long-known problem but Ubi has not released a patch or even acknowledged the problem.. surprise surprise.
Considering I have never had the Ubi servers down when I have tried to play SHV, a free game that I have had a few hours of fun in is something I can't bitch about.

@ commie and Catfish
no I'm not saying im some kind of anti priracy freak. all i was getting at is that piracy is very common and companies are worried about it, especially in these times. also, i disagree with the piracy word. It is what you call it. Ive always had it called that...either that or stealing.
