November 25th, 1939.
I have already sunk 160K of tonnage, with the biggest one being a nelson. EVERY single time I come across a convoy I am completely ignored by the escorts. :nope:
Sunk a Nelson - no response, escorts steamed on.
Damaged a queen Elizabeth - same deal
Raped a convoy - 3 escorts just did minor course changes.
I mean, I understand that at the beginning of the war, the Tommies did not use ASDIC very well and their DCs were set too shallow... But COME ON! At least have the cook throw some frikin' potatoes on my hull to simulate an attack.
Please tell me there is more of a challenge then this.

Could it be that different game distributions (dvd vs digital) has anything to do with the comments on escorts ignoring the uboat?

This is a serious problem with the game. The AI is truly terrible.
Attack in fog and they won't fire back, you can attack with the deck gun!!!! I sunk 3 Dido light cruisers this way

Strange, I'm in January 40, found a convoy and only managed to sink a ship and damage another before I was driven off by the escorts. 3 of 4 headed my way full speed. It was a night attack and they even fired star shells, it was like daylight and I had to crash dive. Then 2 of them dropped DCs around me for four hours before they finally gave up. I can't believe they were that good in Jan-40.
But, someting I noticed, if SH5 acts strange in one way or another, save and reload...and everything is just fine :D

HA! I shelled the Queen Elizabeth... :yeah:
Ran out of ammo since she wouldn't sink. I guess it takes a while to sink those with an 88... :hmmm:
But still... AT LEAST lob a shell in my direction. :stare:
Scapa is the best port to hold a loud &wild midnight party. Last time I raided the place, was on surface with chicks and bbq on con tower and the radio at max. At 1.2 km from QE I launched a salvo then continued the loud party for another hour. No brit was interested in us or at least to join our party. Not even the drunk crew firing the cannon randomly did not get their attention :(
I'm really sad about SH5. I can live with the bugs, I can live with the unfinished content, but not with how casual this game is now. SH should be a very hardcore game, sinking a ship should be a great achievement so you can feel that u play a real sim, not pacman.
This trend to make the games more and more casual pisses me off. Blizzard did the same with WoW, but at least the hardcore raiders had an option for hard modes. Even so, many hardcore players left the game, including me. But sadly, there is no more hard games on market. Everything is casual now, just to get all nabs playing ur game and make more money. I was in big hope that I will find again in SH5 the hardcore gaming I love, but this version is just an epic fail. Match the dots and fire away, then post ur log on ubi... what a great game

+1 to this...
This is kinda how I feel.
Oh man this thread is making me sad - anyone else out there getting a plastering by the escorts?

Must of been one hell of a party. The cook must have been going crazy making his "special meal"... :arrgh!:

I have been attacked by escorts nearly every time i have attacked a convoy they have been most of the time verry good i even have been shot at from long range at night and on my first patrol i was hunted by 7 destroyers for 8 hours with some of them working in pairs to cut off my ascape rout to the open sea :salute: so i am thinking to that it may be a problem with the digital download game as apposed to the DVD version of the game which mine is, i offten read of problems with the destroyer A.I and think to my self are they playing a diffrent game to me as i have no such problems ?

So far I have found DDs that want to sink me, but the planes tend to just keep buzzing me but never take a shot

I have a mod that adresses this, also it adjusts the 20mm flak gun so the crew can actually shoot a plane down.
I wonder if the difficulty level you start the campaign at is the culprit?

It has no effect on DDs, that much I know.
They seem to track me just fine.... until I dive below 40 meters. Then they forget I exist.

Strange how some people see completely different stories - uber hard DDs and escorts that will completely ignore you if you are submerged.
I just snuck into a task force. I play with no contacts on, so i have no idea where their "sensor" circles are... but here's what happened:
June 1941:
Mid-Day, Light fog, Periscope depth, fank speed, coming in from the side..
I was able to get all the way into the middle of the group no problem and i fired 4 torpedos from ~600m and sunk a Kent Heavy cruiser. Dove to 40m depth, turned right 90 degrees and sailed away. Not a single light escort turned to look for me. They just sailed away into the sunset.
Pretty ridiculous if you ask me. I was doing flank speed, with my scope up the whole time... and pased right near the outer escort screen.
This is not an isolated incident either. This happens to me routinely. I can't remember the last time i've had to use the TDC. Every convoy i encounter gets raped from ~500m. No need for a solution at that range. Just come in from the side, and lead em ever so slightly.

I was hoping to go no map contacts next time on my next patrol.

Head over to the mods section, there are a couple of AI mods to download that address this problem.
this is Killer AI mod

can't seem to find the other one ATM will edit if I come across it later.

I downloaded my copy from steam and im not having any problem with the ai. They will attack me as soon as my first torpedo hits its target, if i surface or get to close to one of them submerged. Ive also had destroyers show up while im waiting for a ship to sink.

I bought my copy from UBI. Currently my campaign is around august of 1940. I don't use any modes at this time . I wouldn't say I have a killer AI but definitely not jello AI either. Escort is noticing me fairly good and attack aggressively; however, I can admit I can escape easily their attempts..
Lately I had few destroyers waiting for me at designated by mission patrolling area. Nice touch. Seems like we have intelligence leak :DL

Funny, I've heard the opposite from people that downloaded the game... Very odd there are different experiences from different people. Seems like there is no coorelation

Last night I just destroyed an entire convoy of Liberty Ships (in '39 of course), large steamers and Hog Island freighters. I succeeded in torpedoing the two escorts but while deck gunning the convoy I came under fire from a third escort, beyond my visual range.
I got really scared but the shots all fell wide so I didn't dive. Eventually I cheated and used free cam to see what the hell was going on. It was a destroyer, gunning away from a ridiculous range and not closing at all.
Finally I put the last rounds into the freighters so I expended my last two torpedoes to get the last of them under and only then did the DD close the range and force me to dive.
I've been very enthusiastic about this game but that is just too much. I think this game has great potential, but I have to wait until patches are out or until modders improve upon it. Getting 100K+ tonnage with the deck gun when an escort is still watching the convoy is just ridiculous. With a heavy heart, this game is shelved for now. Back to GWX for me.
...man, I'll miss those awesome graphics :wah:
By the way, I was even using Hararmir's AI and sensor mods.

I'm near the end of December, 1940 now. A couple days ago, I managed to penetrate an escort screen around a BB ("Royal Sovereign"). In SH3 or 4, I wouldn't even have tried it. Anyway, with three lucky shots, two of them in the, "VERY lucky" category, I managed to sink the BB and, then, and again, too easily, evade the screen.
After a period of time listening at about 40m/150 ft, I decided I was probably far enough away to surface and get a breath of air. Lo and behold, though, there is SOME AI after all. Northwest of me was a DD running dead slow, with searchlights off, waiting...waiting. Admiral Ackbar (punishment tour) on the Obs Scope shrieked, "It's a trap!" just in time to avoid my exposing more than just the periscope head!
Enjoy Admiral Ackbar Breakfast Cereal! Admiral Ackbar says, "Your taste buds can't repel flavor of this magnitude" - NOW WITH BRINE SHRIMP !!!

I'm just dismayed that I should bag an entire convoy this easily. Just tried a SH3 patrol, but... but the graphics are just so bad!
I admit it! I'm a graphics wh... :wah:
Guess I'll give SH5 one more spin. Either that or it's back to Nappy Total War.
Edit: Or maybe I'll just try some tweaking myself...
hmmm. . . while I have no problem dealing with the AI, they certainly are not up to snuff with GWX, they don't totally ignore me either. My big thing is, I've been run over by two different DD's now, and both times I've come away with barely a scratch. Honestly, I'm half tempted next time to just sit at periscope depth and let the DD hit me full on and see if it sinks me or not. I have also yet to be damaged by a DC. They drop them in my general vicinity, but they don't do any actual damage that I can see.
I'm getting rather brave and beginning to feel invincible in my little Type VII.

I've been a bit annoyed with how easy it is. Maybe its just because I'm only in the early months of the game and the British haven't 'caught up' yet. However yesterday, I was able to kill off 3 destroyers and two merchants with out even one depth charge! I was at periscope depth running at flank and they never even came close to me. And when they did detect me they just came straight at me, no weaving at all, so was v. easy just to plonk a torpedo in their bow!
Can anyone who's later in the war tell me if the destroyers get better at finding and DCing the u-boot? (I want my Das Boot experience!!!!!)

Man, it's hard..I barely got to within 2000 yards when I was pinged. Five escorts came from all directions and drove me down to 500ft. From there I was butched by over 200 depth charges. Planes joined the attack. The escorts held me down until I finally escaped late night in a storm. I did another end around and attacked in the storm constantly running from escorts with surface radar trying to drive their bows on my stern. Got lucky and sank two merchants and got out of there...
Whoops, I thought this was the SH4 forum, sorry.

Yeah I went to scapa and it was a Turkey shoot.... sunk two moored capital ships, I could have done in a the Bismark and gotten away with it without detection.
Ive seen Punks on Ketamine in a higher state of alertness than those Royal navy Destroyer crews.
