Granted, BAE didn't do themselves any favours but here's further evidence of the British government turning its back on its own industry:

Couldn't BAE have thrown in a few bribes to secure the contract, or have they been caught doing that too often.

Shame this is leaving British shores.

However, on the bright side, if the Yanks build them, they are less likely to want to blow them up on the battlefield.:DL

:damn: And BAe was just getting its act together too. Times like these the government should be encouraging local growth, no offense to our American colleagues.

None taken. We tend to feel the same way.

Oh I fully understand and agree :yep:

We may not have heard the end of this yet...:hmmm:

But the Conservatives branded the move precipitous. The shadow Defence Secretary, Liam Fox, said: "It is quite wrong for the Government to sign multibillion-pound contracts, unless they are urgent operational requirements for Afghanistan, just weeks before a general election and ahead of a strategic defence review which all parties are committed to."

BAE is in deep with your submarine programs. (no pun intended). Sometimes the contracts do not always go to the lowest bidder. At least that is how it can be handled here in the government when contracts are offered for bidding.

True but the timing is pretty insensitive with unemployment rising and a general election that is likely to unseat Labour due in a couple of months.

This will be perceived as a slap in the face for so many Labour party faithful, especially in the north of England where there support mainly comes from.

I think spending £2bn on tanks when the country is in debt is ludicrous anyway no matter where the contract is placed. It also has to be remembered that the Government is bound by rules governing procurement of goods and services especially for contracts worth this amount of money and sometimes it is not always possible to place the contract where you would like to politically.

Maybe a lend-and-lease contract ? They used this before, and England can pay it back when it has won the .. ahem.

The 'Cash' element will probably be the biggest stumbling block :DL

Seems to be a common problem amongst our governments.

Its not all bad news, as BAE got the contract to design the new type 26 Frigate, and build 4 more Astute class Submrines.
Should keep Barrow shipyard busy for a while.

Pics are unlikely because I don't think she's even in the design stage yet.

Although:

Take what you will from the 3D model in this article.

It'll be interesting to see how close the finished article is when compared to the model....very little I suspect :DL

At the expense of Public Services....soon only the rich bankers will be able to afford to provide for themselves.

uk is also to get the f35 by 2012 13, rumors say us marines units will get them first, to replace the harrier.

little industry left in uk. feel sorry for uk people ,really hope somthing turns around, even here in the us things are not so hot. yea these military contracts will keep some jobs on, but in times like these money could be better spent on its people.
not the aircraft thats deadly, its the bomb bullet and missile.

has to be a better system?

..i dont trust any political leaders anymore, tv is total brain washing. i forsee possible riots in western free nation countries soon, people will simply steal to eat.

Solve the overpopulation problem and you will have prosperity..... but then again - that is what war machines do real well..... solve overpopulation.

Not that I advocate such, just historical fact and we are headed the same direction.
