Hey guys.
Its august '42 and im near Guadalcanal. Jap task force is incoming and i positioned my self for an attack. Seven fubuki destroyers incoming in column formation one behind another.
Im about 600m from their path.
Here is the problem.
Its so dark that i cant see anything and to be worse, its raining heavy.
I know their course but have no clue about speed.
All i know is that they are going very fast.
Now, i tried firing 4 spread torps when first ship was at bearing 50 and i scored two hits, but i want to be more effective.
First question, what would you do in that situation?
Im afraid that if i use active sonar to determinate speed, they will detect me (that's for sure).
Second question, what if i let them pass and follow them to their destination?
I never saw whats going on when task force is invading an island. Will they engage with other units?

You want to be more effective? You did good!
I'd set myself up at right angles to their path, estimate 20 knots and let go with a Dick O'Kane type spread from 800 yards or less. That's almost guaranteed hits.

If you're playing RSRD and one of those groups running the slot, they're almost always going 30 plus knots. I've attacked them many times, dang near impossible to set up in clear weather because theyre moving it, usually at about 27-33kts.
You really have to shoot long before they hit a 90 track because they're going so fast, but I do set up a basic Cromwell attack so the angle is better. You have the course by radar, so set up as you have, just shoot on a sharper angle and use about 33kts on those groups. Like RR said shoot spreads of 3 at a front ship and one a little further back, you'll hit something.
You could do this, Fire the DG at them by radar when they get close. They'll slow down and come looking for you. Using radar you can dance around and shoot them up with your DG. Just get a bearing and range and shoot down it, a few hits starts a fire and you have that to aim at..
just don't let one catch you on the surface if you have a supermod loaded.

Yep, TMO+RSRD, Gar class.
Very good tips thanks, i wanted to ask before i start because constant loading of saved game isnt much realistic.
Rockin Robbins didnt understand well, i fired 4 torpedoes and hit with 2, 2 missed.
I would be very happy to hit two ships :salute:

If you got two hits in the rain on fast DD's...what more can you ask for..

hmmm... four hits? :DL
In such a situation I would BE A MAN and get the hell out of there ... and veeeery quietly too...:DL
BTW how did the remaining DDs react?

I cant miss chance like that and cruise away :)
Remaining DD's went all crazy on me, pinging me from every direction, and going straight toward me.
I didnt had time to play that part yet, im making a short SHIV movie, so far looking good, will post it here once i finish. :shucks:

So im back in the game.
I fired 6 spread torpedoes and hit first ship with two of them, 4 missed, doesnt matter because i sunk him
(grey icon on the map, why it is not red :hmmm:)
Im moving under them and getting in the position to fire from aft tubes.
By the time i got there, they finished searching for me and continued their course.
Only one ship left, standing still.
Im going on surface and getting my deck gun ready.
Just as i went there he started moving, i saw him just for a second when he was passing betwean me and some light (moon maybe).
Fired the deck gun and missed. He just ignored me and continued on his course.
I couldnt catch up with them, they were too fast, but i tracked them with radar.
And then, they just disappeared :arrgh!:

I believe the icon is grey/gray because you didn't have a visual ID of the vessel.

Same thing happened when I took a 'blind' shot in bad visibility, grey icon but still got the tonnage.

Someone correct me if this is wrong, but I think the way it works, is that ships will just disappear at the end of their programmed track when they get near a destination port.
If you got two hits, I'd call that a good shot considering the circumstances!

Yeah, me too.... discretion the better part of valor, etc. On the other hand, at that location and with RSRD, it could be a "Tokyo Express" convoy, where the Japanese were forced to use DD's as fast troop transports on night runs, to avoid air attacks. If I was in a role-playing mood, I might put my boat in more danger than I normally would, to help the war effort. Hitting those particular destroyers would be doing a lot more damage than the usual DD encounter.

From using the mission editor there is a check box that dictates whether the ship disappears upon reaching it's final waypoint or not. So, it could disappear or not depending on that setting.

I like the way Frumpkis looks at this. Much the way I do.
How much risk to take depends on the situation, that is realism between the ears, it's mostly in your imagination.

I got a radio message saying that the Japanese task force is heading toward Guadalcanal, so i went there to intercept.
I was disappointed when i saw them disappear, i expected to see a great battle because i never run into one.
And i wonder, how will the AI react when they are engaged with both, surface and sub units.

You can play a few of the preprogrammed short missions to get a feel of a large scale battle. Battle of Midway is there.
In my experience in "fleet" battles they still send some DDs (at least 3 depending on fleet sizes) to hunt and kill me. If the opposition isn't great then expect every available DD to be in pursuit. And then it can be kind of funny to watch. They steam in full speed 30+ knots only for one or more of them to hit reverse when they realize they are going to collide right on top of me. Then they take turns running over me and DCing. Quite scary as well.
