View Full Version : To sync or not to sync ?

I dont often do polls but I was wondering what percentage of players use the 'service' to sync their games online and what percentage chose not to.

I used to. After losing a full day of gameplay since their "synch" means "remotely overwrite with old data" instead of "make sure both clients have the same data" I turned it off. Of course that means that because of the way it works I can never turn it on again.

'Sync' my games? Is that what you Yanks call 'Registering' your software? :03:

You can turn it on or off in the first 4 seconds on the popup which connects you to the server in the top-right corner (little cogwheel)
I have turned it off due to the reports as stated above.

I'm guessing you dont have the game or else you would know what this is about. :up:

I sync, simply because that is the default option and I have had no issues so far.

Is there an advantage to cancelling online saves?

Post #2 pretty much sums it up. :cool:

Oh and I swear I got someone elses saved game once because it put my sub in a location that I have never been to before. I just loaded another save. Should have looked at it more closely.

No, turned it of completely. Helps speeding up geting out of the regular "synching games" windows, though can't get rid of them completely.

I'm guessing you dont have the game or else you would know what this is about. :up:I have the game and love it! It's just when you used the term 'games' plural, I wasn't sure if you were referring specifically to this DRM business (997th Thread regarding this issue by-the-way). How many games have you got that have DRM?!:o If the title of this thread is actually: 'Do you allow SH5 to sync your saved games?', then there are already 332 Threads with that title :O:

I allow the sync of saved games, because it's quick, convenient and poses absolutely no problems whatsoever. Next question...

Yes, we have a choice.
No, even if you check 'don't sync savegames online' it still syncs.

Yes, we need a "I tried not to. Didn't work at all that st*** b*** of sh***" answer in this poll. :damn:

Got rid of it as soon as I figured out how after I lost a few hours worth of playing when I got synched with old savegames. Now looking for a way to get rid of the autosave function...

I turned it off after hearing that a few players have had problems. It seems to be less intrusive with it off too.

That kind of thing was intentionally omitted.

I second this. I have it turned off and it still says it's syncing as soon as it hits the main menu.

I have to wait for it to finish before i can play.

How then to go about to really shut it down (besides using the :arrgh!:version)?

I had SH5 set up to sync online saves. During my last patrol I kept hitting a certain time and date in the campaign where it would try to auto-save/sync online. Each time this attempt was made the game would Crash To Desktop. After this happening several times I disabled on line saving/sync. Even after I disabled it it also said it was syncing games from the server at the main menu. I had to go back 2 saves for it to finally not CTD.

Looking back now I forgot that I had edited a .tga file the day before and I think that somehow corrupted my online auto saves/sync, causing my CTD problems. The DRM probably thinks the game files are corrupt possibly because they have been altered(?) and CTD.

I still have syncing off and my auto saves are up to date with my current campaign. No more CTD so far. (Crosses fingers!!!)

I had exactly the same experience.
Now turned off.

I lost a few saves and some gone corrupted or something (just CTD while loading).
I turned off online saves and now I "only" have the usual bugs, like morale going to zero etc etc.

Same, it ignores my wishes and syncs anyway.

I think this is cepts in the graphics settings (sync) and are actually used for the operation for 3D glasses.

This will move the images Syncron.
if I'm not mistaken.
But this option I have nowhere found on SH5

Is there like a screenshot or a picture?

Well, if you crash out of the game for any reason (it doesn't get shut down properly, allowing it to upload saved games), you'll lose all progress next time you start it, as the syncing process makes sure your saves are identical to what's on the server. I imagine the same thing happens if the game shuts down properly, but servers are down/inaccessible at the time.
This can be worked around by copying all your saves to another location before risking the sync, and if they get deleted, copying them back after the game has started and sits in the main menu.
I haven't had a chance to verify that turning sync off will actually turn sync completely off. However, if it does, that's what I'd recommend.

Last nite it took a really unusual long time to synch, so I just turned it off. I've not seen much time difference thus far, tho.:hmmm:

Well I've left this alone and as it is stock. Reason being is I have no problem with it. And I like to leave something that hasn't any problems alone.
Besides if i ever have to uninstall and reinstall like I have once already, I wont have to start all over again. The online saves will be there and I can just pick up where I left off in spite of the fact that I reinstalled the sim.

Hold on.. so most people aren't using on of SH5's most hyped online features that was used to sell the broken DRM ??

The only valid reason for online saves in general I can think of is if you had hundreds of hours invested in Guild Wars. I read this somewhere on this forum, can't recall where. IIRC correctly this is the guiding principle behind DRM.

I'm perfectly capable of handeling my own saved games thanks. Including backups.

What does Guildwars have to do with it?

I have it turned off as well and it still syncs.

I wrote a little script to semiautomagically archive all my saves to avoid getting screwed by the sync.

'================================================= =========================
'
' NAME: saveback.vbs
'
' PURPOSE: automatically create recursive archive of files in sourcedir
' to an archive in backupdestdir, named with time / date stamp
'
' USAGE: cscript saveback.vbs "c:\sourcedir" "c:\backupdestdir"
'
'================================================= =========================

On Error Resume Next

Set WshShell = WScript.CreateObject("WScript.Shell")
homed = WshShell.CurrentDirectory

Set WshShell = Nothing

Dim objFSO
Set objFSO = WScript.CreateObject("Scripting.FileSystemObject")
set objShell = CreateObject("Wscript.Shell")

Set oArgs = Wscript.Arguments
sourceDir = oArgs.Item(0)
destDir = oArgs.Item(1)

rarpath = "C:\Program Files\WinRAR\rar.exe"
raroptions = " a -r -ep1 -inul "

backupname = Replace(Date, "/", ".") & " " & Replace(Time, ":", ".") & ".rar"

set objExec = objShell.Exec(Chr(34) & rarpath & Chr(34) & raroptions & Chr(34) & destDir & "\" & backupname & Chr(34) & " " & sourceDir & Chr(34))

wscript.echo("Please wait while " & backupname & " is created")

Do While objExec.Status = 0
wscript.sleep 1000
wscript.stdout.write(".")
Loop

I use it, despite the one session that ended in a sound-related (creative alchemy) BSOD resulted in about 18 hours of lost progress. Since then, if SH5 exits improperly somehow, I make sure I take a copy of the savegames before attempting to start the game again.
Really, to say I use it isn't entirely accurate. The function is there, but I have yet to find it useful. I guess it makes sense for someone on the road a lot, but the DRM and performance of most laptops make that pretty much a non-starter anyway.

Holding steady at nearly 90% of you do not use this 'feature'.
