View Full Version : Wish me luck!

Dowly
03-21-10, 04:04 PM
Tomorrow morning will be first try on a new treatment for my knees (Remicade).

Now, the good thing is that if it works, I should be able to live a painless life (surgery is still a go to fix the damage to the bones).

The down side is that it might not work at all and even worse there can be some pretty serious side effects to the drug.

So, wish me luck! :yeah:

Just got home, gah, 4 hours of boredom! Not even telly in the goddamn room! :stare: But no worries, had my Das Boot with me and passed tiem reading it.

No complications during the treatment and knees feel very good (but that's propably because of the painkiller I took in the morning). Interested to see how they are tomorrow morning. :hmmm:

Wow been away for a long time, not a nice thing to find from an old colleague and fellow GWX beta tester. Still I am hopeful for you and wish you the best of luck Dowly.

I broke my ankle back in November 2008 and had to submit to surgery and then nearly 4 months of crutches and physiotherapy. Lesson, do not bicycle the first frosty night of the year. Nice to see some other familiar faces here too.

Anyway get better soon.

Ofcourse he should, thinking about nurses in tight outfits, leaning over you to check on something, with their clea.... never mind, loosing my train of thought here.

The point I'm trying to make is that thinking about it is fine, acting on it not so much, but it might provide interesting ideas for what to do with the wife.

Rheumatoid arthritis is the fancy name and I'm stuck with this. :shifty: It's just about finding a drug that slows it down to a crawling speed so it won't damage the bones any more than it already has.

Can't say I have ever even though about natural treatments, seeing every standard drug fail to help, I can't really think how fish oil would make any difference :hmmm: Besides, it tastes like crap. :DL

Seriously man, try fish oil. It doesn't have to be in liquid form that doesn't taste very good, it's also in capsules and in foods. Also use lots of olive oil etc. in cooking. Eat french fries, they have grease in them. :) I once went for some time by only putting cheese or something on the bread and no butter, made my knees and joints sort of freeze up. You need the oils etc. to 'lubricate' your joints. I'm surprised your doctor hasn't told you about this.

But then again you told earlier that you get water in your knees/joints? That I'm not sure what to do about. I sometimes get 'puffiness' and swelling in my knees when I overwork my knees at the gym but it usually goes away after I let them rest for awhile.

Dowly
03-23-10, 12:17 PM
But then again you told earlier that you get water in your knees/joints? That I'm not sure what to do about.

That's part of the disease. It's an auto-immune disease, so the fluid is caused by your own body attacking the fluid bag thingies in your joints which then damages the bones, which then agitates the joints and causes even more fluid to build up. There are drugs that should dry the joints, preventing the fluid to build up but those never worked for me.

As for the oil thing, I eat pretty greasy food most of the time, so that should be covered. :O:

EDIT: Oh yeh, been having little fever most of the day. :-?

OneToughHerring
03-23-10, 12:32 PM
Take it easy and chill out and remember to drink fluids. I would still recommend the fish oil in some form, it has the oils and also vitamins and nutrients in a better form then your average greasy not-so-healthy food.

Anywho, after the first 2-3 days of slight fever doing a rollercoaster and some mild headaches there's been no side effects. And most importantly, almost no pain on the joints. :yeah: Now for the 2nd "fill-up", why the heck it has to be at 8am.

Usually I don't visit this section of the forum so that's why I'm late...
I feel sorry for you that you have to go through life carrying this burden.

Here's me wishing you all the very best, brother. In the long run I hope the new treatment will let you enjoy life rightly, in other words, as much as possible. ;)

Thought to post a bit of an update:

The Remicade worked pretty well, but as my doctor's an perfectionist bitch, she decided to cut the treatment as she didn't see perfect results.

Why she doesn't see perfect results is that I still haven't gotten into that surgery I've been waiting on for the past year and she knows this. Idiot.

Aaanywho, she got me on another drug called Humira, which is one of them self-injected thingies. Sucks like a $1000 hooker, I hate needles. :shifty:

At any rate, took the first injection today, should see results either way by the end of the week. :hmmm:

That's not too bad I suppose... Just don't use the same spot over and over for the injection, as far as I know it causes damage to blood vessels. :-?

Not that I'm an expert or something, but let's just say they have (had) a hell of a time in the hospital drawing blood from my mom.

Dowly - as a long-time sufferer of knee problems (6'4" does not fold into Bradley CFVs well, nor does it lend itself to lots of jumping out of them) I can sympathize... my sincere hopes and best wishes are with you on this course of treatment - be safe, be well, and may you be pain- and complication-free.
