View Full Version : Is it possible. . . ?
Was watching Das Boot again... for the umpteenth time, and the scene where they fire the last torp to sink the freighter which is refusing to sink is, to my mind, the most poignant scene in the movie, as they suddenly see some men still aboard, jump thru' the flames into the sea.
So, I was wondering ( and don't think I am masochistic or morbidly fascinated by death) is it possible, simply to give a more realistic feel to the game, to make a mod showing some survivors jumping into the sea?
They don't have to be on flames (lol) as in the movie, altho' that would be a bonus. ( Go ahead - flame me you momma's boys. I bet some of you were thinking the same thing when you watched the movie. )

I think if the ship is sinking slowly an animation of lifeboats being lowered would be good. If it is sinking quickly, crew jumping overboard would be great.
I loved the scene, but the extended version of the scene that follows in essential. Unfortunately, that conversation is only in the Uncut Version.
Yeah - I have the uncut version. Well worth it.
Lifeboats and crew in distress is all good but Im quite tired of all the arcadish explosions whenever there'a slight damage beeing inflicted to enemy ships (mostly by shelling). And Im tired of the things 'jumping' of sinking/badly damages ships (like masts, craters and aircraft).
Its not like real ships had TNT strapped around them and gasolinecontainers everywhere, especially in wartime.
Indeed, surprising how much difference some of the added scenes make. It's still not quite as great as the book, but hey, unlike the book it is all on screen!
Well, the crew used to drop down on deck and then disappear in SHIV. I'm hopeful that even if once the crew are fixed (and they should be - right now they don't even disappear when the ship sinks) there is no fancy animation like this, the new scripting features will allow mods to eventually add things like that. It's not essential but would sure look impressive.
Quote: ". . .all the arcadish explosions whenever there'a slight damage beeing inflicted . . . "I agree. Too repetitive at times - like Fourth of July fireworks. Altho' boilers and ammo storage exploding etc., can really make a scene. However, am not complaining so far.

Yep. I do believe it won't be long. I think this game will be a whole different animal in 6 months.

Honestly any Torpedoe/Shell hit blows the life boats away as the first debris.

North Sea : 1940
U-69 approaches a "Cinnamon" tanker, being fresh out of ammo, the captain orders all stop and rushes to the forward deck, brandishing his trusty .22 pistol.
Dodging a blaze of gun fire, he empties the clip into the ships hull, and to his surprise it erupts into a mushroom cloud. Another ship sank....:har:
Yup, I too am tired of the "one shot-whole ship a blaze" game mechanic.

wambam: to quote a message, wrap it in QUOTE tags this way:

Remove the spaces in the brackets and you're good. Alternatively just hit the "Quote" button in the bottom right of the post.
Just so you know;).

Altho' boilers and ammo storage exploding etc., can really make a scene.
Boilers rupturing should give of a lot of white steam, nothing more. Ammunition is made from explosive powders. An initial fireball may occur, but mostly there should be a lot of smoke.
A burning tanker will certainly have flames, but not too many explosions. Gasoline tankers may have that, but most are carrying crude oil.

I stand corrected - and now well-informed. Love it. Prob. too much to expect modders to apply such distinctive differences but would sure bring real-life to the game.
Thanks, Safe-Keeper, for kind advice.
There's a lot of different kinds of explosions - although I don't know if it's really possible to mod such things since a lot of it is tied rather closely to hit points...
I always found the explosions a little weird since they're kind of a compromise that look somewhere between the different kinds of explosions you'd see, but not like any of those things. They don't look like violent detonations, they don't look much like oil or powder magazine deflagrations, and they sure don't look anything like boiler bursts. The problem is that all those things all look pretty different as it were. Powder, high-octane gas, crude oil and HE all go up in their own ways.
I guess that's not a terrible problem, but the one thing I really miss is steam. I wish there was at least steam - would add quite a lot to the sight of dying metal ships...

Everyone has to accept the constraints/limitations of the game engine unfortunately.

Are you saying a SH5 vs. Moby Dick would be in order like something like this:

If so, that is why I have not rushed out and bought the game yet - too busy trying to figure out if it is the white elephant or white whale, nor is it in the near future as a purchase until it is possible to sink the whale along with the destroyer escorts and the white elephant.
