Just curious if anyone else still plays Call of Duty World at War?

I still play it because its one of the few modern games i've found that lets you fight in the PTO of WW II.I like that it includes the battle of Peleliu, which is often neglected despite being such a tough battle.Although I wish the game was more open ended and not so scripted to up the replay value and the constant grenade lobbing is annoying(and wish the entire game was PTO and not ETO) but overall still love the game and play it on regular basis.Finishing the game on Veteran is pretty tough.I find the Okinawa mission at Wana Ridge(where the grass is tall and you have flamethrower) to be very tough on Vet level. The hand to hand combat is not bad, Japanese Banzai charge often , esp fun when you have a bayonet on your rifle.

Also, any new of anymore WW II PTO shooters coming out? I'd like to see a first person shooter with elements that allow you to choose different weapons etc and not so much scripted behavior.

I used to play it, got all the way up to doing prestige mode, but a fried computer put paid to my profile. No external back-ups sadly, and I don't really feel like starting from scratch again. Guess that's the end of WaW for me.

Battlefield Bad Company 2 is worth a look though, fantastic game, plenty of unlocks, and fully destructible environments. Great fun.

I really liked COD WAW because it covers the PTO and esp the later PTO battles which were intense and are so in the game.Only annoying thing is the Japanese seem to have an unlimited supply of grenades, which is a thing in all COD games, very annoying.Wish they had made the entire game PTO, covered battles from early to late war.The Russian vs Germany in late stages is fun but wanted all PTO.Hopefully theyll do an entirely PTO COD at some point.Minus the idiot squad mates and constant grenade throwing by enemies.

I really don't think Call of Duty is going to be around much longer; while MW2 sold well, the multi-player limitations put a real dent in it's overall popularity and longevity. I suspect that if there are future titles, they will be moving in a different direction from WaW, that is assuming they don't go with console exclusives.

Personally, I've lost faith in Call of Duty, it seems that the developers/publishers are too busy fighting amongst themselves to produce the quality of their previous instalments. It's a pity, but I think we have to look to new horizons.

Know about the spat between Activision and IW? Some top execs at IW didn't agree with the direction Activision was stearing them in and effectively rebeled. Don't think IW will be making any CoD games anymore...

Also, last I heard, Activision wanted to move towards subscription model. Not clear if it will apply to the mainstream games or to some spin-off series though.

Imho 1 game per year is getting close to shovelware, and they actually want to make more of 'm. :nope:

Anyone know how to get the bloody sound working in this game? I spent half the day, trying to get sound working. Even bought a new sound card, and no luck.

Maybe this: http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20081028233920AAKWSuZ

Lot more possible fixes in the other comments, from not installing in default directory to reinstalling DirectX.

It's great playing the campaign on our projector and sound system, but my favorite part has to be the Nazi zombies. Fun times

I freaking give up. I CANNOT GET SOUND. Every other game works fine, EXCEPT THIS ONE. How in the hell can activision release something this bugged?

Ive probably reinstalled and repatched this game a dozen times. Ive tried testing each individual patch to see if using an older version of the game is whats needed.

I've tried all the fixes you'll find scouring the internet:

- setting the audio output quality to 16 bits, and 24 its.

No dice.

- I've tried setting audio hardware acceleration to basic.

No dice.

- Disabeling/removing modem duplex device.

No dice.

- ive tried omputer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\C ontrol\MediaResources\DirectSound\Device Presence
Changing the data for Emulated from 1 to 0

No dice.

- Ive removed all redundant audio devices so there is only one. to make sure there is only one device.

No dice.

- I replaced my soundcard.

No dice

- I tried the onboard audio card.

No dice.

- ive tried every patch combination with all of the above tweaks.

NO Freaking dice!

THE GAMES AUDIO DOES NOT WORK. Period. I wonder if i can bring it back to best buy. I want the 12 freaking hours i wasted trying to get this games auido to run back. The entire game may as well be broken in my opinion. Playing a FPS without audio..?? The game may as well not even exist.

I CANNOT believe the released a game this buggy, this trumps SH5 by a longshot.

If anyone has any idea on something i missed, id appreciate it. I REALLY REALLY wanted to play this game. BUt nooooooooooooooooo.

Win XP, SP3 by the way.

Post your sound card type, maybe that can narrow down the problem for us. :hmmm:

Tho, I must say it's a bit odd when both the sound card and the internal one fails.

In the case you have X-fi, here's something from Gamespot forums:

I have found a solution, at least for X-fi xtremegamer. but hey, who knows anyone else can find this helpful.

in the "mixer", you can choose source for RECording -> just select "line-in"

SB audigy, cause its all that was there when i walked into the store.

I even tried moving the soundcard to another PCI slot since it was sharing an IRQ with the video card. Even with a new IRQ, no sound.

edit:

This oddity defies beleif in my book. I have ZERO problems with any other game i play. Have ME1 and 2, Sh4, Sh5, L4d1 and 2, hell, i can load any game i have in my collection and i have NEVER had this much trouble with any single one of em except for maybe "Boiling point". that game was utter failure.... which is kinda how this one is turning up to be in my book. I refuse to play a FPS without sound. THink ill try and bring it back to best buy for a refund in the next day or two. UnFingbelieveable.

Well, best buy won't take it back, so im stuck with the worthless POS.

On top of that, activisions COD regestration seems to be broken, so i can't even regester to request help on the offical forum.

All all round fail. Not even their website works correctly. Making Ubi look like the patron saints of functioning software.

out of curiosity, for those that do have sound, what soundcard do you have? I brought back the one soundcard i bought on a whim after i discovered its the same freaking chipset as an SB audigy.

It occurs to me that chipset is older then dirt. Never thought about it tell now. But then, EVERY OTHER GAME works except this one. So its not like i have had a reason to explore new soundcards before. The min system requirements for this game says DirectX 9c compatible, which is about as vague as you can get.

I'm sick of shooter games. I bought this one, played it once and it sits on the desk. It has already been un-installed.:dead:

Tried it a bit, had sound with X-fi titanium fatality pro (did not but for the fatality nonsense, Have to point that out) and onboard Realtek... ALC889A I think.

Think i may have found the problem. COD5 doesn't like emulation. The instructions i found said to look for

"\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\C ontrol\MediaResources\DirectSound\Device Presence"

And change emulated value from 1 to 0.

Looked around some more and found another post buried in some obscure messageboard in a thread that no longer freaking existed but in google cache that said to look for EVERY INSTANCE of "device presence". Just looked in regedit on my work machine, and sure enough there are 2 or 3 more "emulated" values that exist (at least here). Which would explain why even after editing the one regester value, my dxdiag still said emulated. I didn't get ALL the values. Can't wait to try this out at home and see if it works.

Thats gotta be it. It struck me odd that the soundcard was being listed as emulate in DXDiag. Doing a sound test it was cut short. But since every other game iinstalled works without hitch, i didn't think much of it.

CO5 is different in that they used alot of newer stuff in it, trying to be cutting edge. Did some more research, and ive even got links for updating the openAL drivers, and an SB audigy support pack/driver update by a 3rd party. SImilar in vain to omega drivers guess.

Ok. Got it to work.
The part in blue from here is the key.
http://therabbitwarren.com/cod5.aspx

I tried all the fixes on the net such as setting sound to 48khz and disabling unimodem half duplex in device manager etc. Anyways, none of these supposed fixes worked for me and many others. I have tried so many things to get this game working which you would not believe.
Last night I had a flash of inspiration. I checked dxdiag which showed my sound card as emulated! That can't be right I thougt, so I went about researching the net and found the following;

The solution lay in a very old WinXp problem. Winxp and 2k incorrectly set the drivers to EMULATED. The trouble is, it's what directsound uses to remember whether it's hardware or software, and my dxdiag thought I had no hardware buffer.

Try start-run-dxdiag[enter] and look at the "sound" or "sound1" tab. If it says the device is EMULATED then this may work for you, it worked for me.

The only way to fix it is to do a regedit (Start-run "regedit"[enter]
and search (Ctrl+F) for every instance of the entry "Device Presence".
Once there, in each one there should have some or all of the following:

(Default)
Emulated
VxD
WDM

Anyways, in most of these in my registry, VxD and WDM were set to 0, and emulated was set to 1. I modified the values so Emulated read 0 and VxD and WDM read as 1. Do this for every entry, by right clicking on the value and editing. Naturally it may be wise to keep a note of original settings on each (some will be 1,0,0 others will be 1,1,1 - was for me anyway) just incase something borks and you need to reset them.

You will have to re-run DXDIAG (start-run "dxdiag"[enter]) and set the hardware accelleration back to full and test it.

To clarify, change
VxD
WDM

To 1 if they are set at 0. Changing just the emulated regester to off (0) grayed out hardware acceleration in DXdiag and i had no sound card listed in dxdiag. One set of entries had VxD and WDM set at 0. Setting these to 1 fixed that. Sucker runs like a champ now.

Hi,

I still play COD WAW every so often...Problem I have is all the hackers and cheats that seem to figure a way around Punkbuster. Anyway, there is a program available to backup your profile in that game just incase your 'puter has the big melt down. I back it up and save the file on an external. If anyone is interested, i'll send info. on it. Also, I had sound issues and the way i fixed it (after much screwing around) is I simply did a system restore back a few days. Fixes it everytime...Seems to be a vista issue as well. Later all.:woot:
