View Full Version : How do you deal with evading targets?

In manual targetting, of course.

How do you crackerjaclk shots cope with a wildly manuevering target after it realized there's danger about? I usually cut my estimated target speed by a third, and sort of average out the angle on the bow better the two extremes of it's zigzags. It works about half the time, but may be due more to luck than anything else.

Bacause of this, convoy attacks are usually a one-shot affair for me.

I submerge and let it go away. Then I surface and do an end-around, taking another shot later when the target has calmed down some.

Yeah, that would be best. But sometimes I feel like getting all USS Barb on a convoy's ass and tearing the place up.

Take two measurements. The second one must be taken after the target has zig-zagged a few times. Use the stop watch in the TDC (your XO) to calculate the base course and base speed. Set the AOB according to the heading calculated by XO (the dial on the right need to match target heading on the left). Adjust the torpedo spread to a slightly wider angle and let the fish go.

Of course, being close if possible assures a hit.

There is no single answer for this, that is what makes the game so good.

Each attack depends on the overall situation. Weather, number and position of escorts, day or night, range, time of the war, value of the target(do I want to spend a extra torpedo or two to guarantee a hit) and in a not too realistic sense what mods you run. THAT is why you are the Captain.

You can do things in stock that are instant death in late war TMO 1.9

If I feel comfortable leaving my scope up for extended periods of time
I'll do much as Thor does. Constant helming ships settle down quickly to about 5 or 6Kn. and a little plotting will give you an average course pretty quickly. I shoot just before the apex of a turn, if a high value target will send an extra fish just to be sure.

If I'm not comfortable with the situation I do a runaround and set up better conditions.
I've tracked a good convoy for two or three days just to get to the point that the escorts are guarding a bunch of open water.
Great fun for me at least.

If possible (presense of escorts, and armament and speed of target being the main factors) I try to get within 600 - 800 yds of the fleeing ships tail with my torps set to fire fast, 10' above the keel, contact/influence, and dead straight ahead.

I wait until the target first gets established on a new zig, then aim the torp just ahead of the bow and fire. If I miss astern, I aim further ahead next time and vice-versa. I can usually get a hit in 2 shots.

Works especially well on the surface at night.

Also, if it's safe to use the deck-gun, blasting away at the stern of a fleeing ship will often bring it to a halt, for an easy torp. setup.
