Does anyone else find that no matter what speed you choose in the advanced controls the game only uses the set 1 to 5 settings realy annoying and is there a workaround that someones found

Are you going 9kts though? You can't expect a ruler that goes from 1 to 5 to display a 9. :O: It'll remain on whatever speed it was probably (remembering that 1 to 5 is really 1/3 to flank).

Let me put it this way I set the speed 5 knots the pirate confirms 5 knots but my sub goes to 7 knots I ask for 9 knots again the pirate confirms the speed I asks for but the sub speeds up to 14 knots etc etc

I noticed this after I spent promotion points on speed upgrades, all the stated speeds are about 2 knots slower than actual speed.
It seems that fuel consumption is based on commanded speed rather than actual speed though.

Just checked it ingame motor officer with no promotion points you get the speed you ask for
My fully maxed gives me 5 knts = 7, 10 knts = 13 15 knts = 20
So the higher the speed the bigger the discrepancy
It does work, but it will display the 1-5 setting that's closest to your ordered speed.
However, a lot of things influence what speed you end up doing, in comparison to the speed you order.
If you order 7 knots in calm seas with no upgrades, the crew will run the engines at the speed to give you roughly 7 knots (that said, the 'advanced' scale isn't shown accurately anyway - the markings don't match the speeds).
If you order 7 knots in rough seas, the crew run the engines at the same speed as they would in a calm sea, resulting in you doing less than 7 knots, I think.
As above, promotion points can also upset this. So can recharging the battery - the crew won't compensate for running on one screw by upping the engine speed.
So the advanced speed controls do work, but not very reliably. Like a lot of things!! ;)
