I am stilll at the beginning of the campaign, participating in the tonnage war in the western approaches to Ireland and England.
I was cheeky and slipped through the English channel on my way to my designated patrol area and passed by a task force containing a carrier going East past the top of Brest. Although my main goal is merchant shipping, I thought that sinking a carrier could only help the German war effort. So I proceeded and succesfully sunk an Eagle class carrier.
A few days later, I managed to severly damage a Hermes class carrier and waited patiently for the escorts to leave eventually as the carrier refused to sink. Pity as it kept burning half submerged and listing to starboard, but refused to go down. So sat tight for 24 hours submerged, eventually surfaced and shelled it to go down.
Anyway, to cut a long, successful patrol short, I would have loved to see the following:
- Radio messages, or intecepting Radio broadcast from London to announce the tragic loss of the carriers and blow to the British war effort.
- A band playing when coming home? Even SH3 had that.
- News paper clip with some propaganda article, think sims like F15 and F117 Stealth fighter my Microprose. When you flew a succesful mission you could click on news and get a newspaper report of your deeds.
- Heavily damaged ships eventually succumb to fire and flooding.
Anyway, I enjoyed it, but just wish since they added this RPG element to the game that it could be fleshed out a bit more when performing outstandingly.
Back to the salty sea for me.
