Im using a type VIIB which I am very happy with (removed the deck gun from mine).

Will I be able to get the same upgrades as the VIIC except the conning tower and AA guns ?

I am not really interested in a bigger kintergarden. Nor the AA guns as I prefer to avoid fighting airplanes on surface.

The only upgrades I am interested in are the other ones : the coating of the sub, and so on...

Have no fear, you can get all the upgrades you desire (except flak - no big deal).

Ja!
Although the IXB is my darling, I do like the VIIB.
(Not a VIIC fan, at all.)

I prefer my rowing boat personally :nope:
Guess which one I mean.
Seriously though,I like the IX's range but prefer the VIIs for all round performance and handling.

Like you, I love the Type VIIB, yes it has it's limitations, but with it's menacing net cutter bow, and deck gun, it is the quint essential U-Boat.

Oh sure, I'll take an XXI. I've had minimal experience in them, but they're big, they're fast and they're usually equipped with pleasant torpedoes. I'm sure I'll be needing one in very short order in late 1940.

That area around the flak is called the Wintergarten just to let you know:)

Are you sure that the only thing we can't get with the B is the conning towers that enable the flak modifications?

If so, this is good news to me. I have always saved my renown until I got the C and then upgraded.

Learn something every day

100% positive.

I like the VIIB, but not the VIIC.
All the electronic goodies are available.

Flak Gunners are like Medics.
I keep them both, and hope I'll never need them.

But the net cutter on the bow is just for looks right? It would not help any when hitting a subnet in GWX, right?

This is great news. I too liked the "B" but thought I would be giving up the cooleo upgrades.

After wasting my renown on the U-flak option, I don't bother with AAA any more.

When I rotate back to the Kregsmarine, it will be the "B" for me

Speaking of which, does the medic ever make a difference in the game?

Don't think so. And I don't think it did much good in real life, either.

Never had an injured crewman, but from what I've read . . . No.
(I'll keep one around though, just in case.
People who believe everything they read . . . shouldn't read.)

It's interesting to note that, if they do work, an officer medic can never help another officer's recovery. (One officer slot per berthing compartment.)

It's like the new "and improved" plastic bumpers on cars.
Looks impressive. Does nothing productive.
(Just another thing to break.)

I've never really taken the time to check, but I like to keep an officer (or two if it's a big boat) and one other person qualified as Medics anyways. Just in case.

I wonder if it's possible for an regular medic to affect an officer's recovery? :hmmm:

Sorry to zombie this thread, came about in comparing VIIb to VIIc and whether or not they are really worht the upgrade.

To answer the question about medics, I can attest they do help. A few patrols have sustained major damage and large numbers of casualties, but maybe only one or two people dead. Put the medic into the stern with the wounded people and they heal about double the rate, also if you're officer is wounded and you have no medic then you're sol. Need the medic to heal an officer.

When you're in a bad situation like that good chance all those wounded will turn into dead sailors, with 1 or 2 hp left a good depth charge drop or two can KO them. If you're still under heavy attack the medic helps to keep those people alive, and eventually start healing and be up to full in a few hours (and you finally get to award someone a wound badge!).

I'm gonna go wound one of my sailors right now! Medals for everyone, but me! Thanks Tessa! :yeah:

No takers for the XXI or XXIII?

The one time I played this game to the end of the war, not playing DiD, the XXI was never offered as an option to me. I don't know why. Maybe I was not in the right port?

I think it is the 11th Flotilla that gets you the XXI in 1944. Sorry if incorrect.

Hehehe, in the average game getting a wound badge is probably the hardest medal to get. It's majorly hard coded into the game that the soldier has to be wounded/survive, and then when you get to award the medals a wound badge will show up. If you try to award it to someone else it will give you an error saying that this sailor wasn't wounded, the only person you can give it to is the one wounded. It makes perfect sense, though a shame that they'd go to so much effort to make sure that medal is awarded with 100% accuracy and others aren't even close.

Who else is going to keep the crabs under control once you get out to sea? Full boat full of sailors that usually had a large amount of leave after returning from patrol are gonna run into some kinda std. Personal hygene wasn't on the top of the list, one of the medics jobs was to try and keep bugs like the crabs or lice to the rest of the crew. Such cramped quarters any kind of major sickness would also be a problem (like malaria) and would need someone there that would know at least how to treat it/able to isolate him such that the rest of the crew didn't catch the disease.

...and again we come to the captain or medical officer pulling out his sidearm! This seems to be a trend in this thread! :O:
