After spending 10 minutes putting down about a hundred waypoints to navigate through the canal like I've done before and set out. Set a reasonable time compression and wait.

Now quite honestly the AI will do a decent job of getting the hell out of the way but I never seen a cluster... like this 4 ships all within a few kilometers plus I was running at flank (sorry extreme speed).

Soo the damage reports come flooding in and by the time I react its the death scene

Note to self save after plotting that freakin course ! :damn:

happend to me many times, go slow, and keep the TC low preferably no more than 256 or 500 and dot use travel mode unless you really need to

Send this kaleun back to school. If we lose boats in the canal, how are we going to win the war?

Yup. Something has got to be done about this stupid deck crew we all seem to have.
Is it me or do they not say anything untill a ship is within 50ft while in T.C.
Makes me wonder about how many ships you miss while at sea useing anything over 250 T.C. ?

Has anyone checked into it. I looked but the numbers meant nothing to me, if I was even looking at the right thing.:hmmm:

Similar scenario the other night, except that I hit the arrow key to slew my binocular view before I remembered that is now the rudder key. Ended half way up the bank before I realized what the heck was going on!

I never do more than 128x in Kiel.

I never do more than 128x in Kiel.

Same, but i slow TC down if i get near a contact. The closer i am to a contact the more i slow down TC. I play with map contact on ATM, due to crews inability to report contacts at hight TC.

Obviously a product of poor game design/execution.

Poor design in that it might well be better to give players the option of 'teleporting' through the canal rather than having to plot through it. The 'realism' junkies can go through it if they want, others can just plot to the 'entrance' point then plot from the 'exit'.

Problem solved.

Poor execution in that they still haven't worked out how to get interruption of TC to work effectively. By 'effectively' I mean interrupting it at a point that is a realistic representation of when the cause of the interruption is likely to be detected. It's a fact that surface vessels will almost always be detected by a submarine before the reverse occurs. It was the advent of radar that altered this, which is a large part of why radar was the decisive factor in the battle of the Atlantic.

As an aside, anyone who disputes this might like to look at the equivalent campaign by US subs in the pacific, where Japanese escorts typically didn't have radar even in late 1944 (read Clear the Bridge by Dick O'Kane and the differences in ASW abilities between the Allies in the Atlantic and the Japanese in the Pacific are staggering).

TC had issues in SH3 and 4, too. They really need to go 'back to the drawing board' to see what's feasible. For all its flaws, a system that chucks you out of TC because there's a possibility of interception within 5 minutes of real time would be preferable as it would avoid the flaw of you knowing nothing until a ship is 100m from you (or, worse, being disturbed by the 'death' screen, which I've read about happening in SH5).

Just poor planning and execution. Nothing new, I guess.

Honestly, you might all feel like its cheating, but I believe within 200km of your home port and against friendly ships with TC above 512x they should just turn the physics off for boat vs boat collision....

I guess that would cause a range of problems though...... Then again....going flank speed down a canal probably isnt a good idea either...haha.

Had just gotten out of Kiel, compression was stuttering so I couldn't get back to x1 quick enough. Sitting outside was a 9 merchant, 4 destroyer convoy and I sailed right into the middle :(

Myself I wouldn't dream of navigating that canal except in real time. I dont even navigate out of the harbor in anything but 1x. It's asking for it.

I navigate the kanal at x8 only. The half hour it takes is worth the game time saved by arriving "alive".

Thats right bro, if im gonna die its going to be in battle not in my own port running into one of my own ships, even I only suffered damage at the very least I'd become the laughing stock of the entire German navy.
