Time for Windows 7 maybe?

Well i've just about given up with running SH5 on my current machines Win XP. It's the only game i have a problem with running and it's not like my machine is low on the resources required. I'm now getting blue screen of death and it's like it can't handle multiple ships at once or something. What really gets me is that i'm currently about to sink a battleship with 5 escort destroyers and now I can't run the game for more than 4 or 5 minutes without it crashing.

I have had Win7 Pro sitting here since I bought on launch and i've been too lazy to do a complete system wipe and reinstall. Now i don't think i have a choice if I want to continue playing SH5 (even if its not finished lol). I personally am enjoying it (with thanks to mod creators of course) and it's a shame but this Friday/Saturday....cometh Win7. :yep:

Win 7 64bit, clean install is the way to go. Dont even think of doing an upgrade to the os.

Run between 4 & 8 gigs of the best ram you can buy, spend a couple of hours learning the new layout of the OS, you will LOVE it.

Probably not a direct problem with the OS. But installing a new OS plus drivers will probably fix the problems by default. I loooove Windows7. I am a computer tech and can agree its the best OS out there. If you can, go 64bit. Youll have to make sure your processor is capable. But most are these days.

I am running the game with XP pro service pack 3 and have no issue. I dont think the problem is the operating program.

Yeah i guessed it's not a problem with the OS but seeing as i've got Win7 ready to roll this gives me the perfect excuse to upgrade now.

Just a quick question to all those claiming the 64bit version is best....I made the huge mistake of going for Vista 64bit and regretted it massively due to no drivers being available and the complete mess that it was at the time i gave up on it....got dual boot XP/Vista and I NEVER use Vista lol.

I'm gonna get some Corsair 4GB RAM which is priced ok i guess as my Striker Extreme can only take the older DDR2. :yeah:

I have to agree, I'm a huge fan of Win 7. It just...makes sense (for the most part).

I think my favorite feature is the search indexer (which works). Basically, you can set windows up to maintain a database of all files on the system, allowing you to very quickly search for anything you need from a box on the start menu. As you type your search string, Windows displays the results almost instantaneously. It's really, really nice.

Still not a fan of UAC, though. That's the first thing to get shut off. :)

I went from Win XP straight into Win7 64 bit, after some navigation problems I prefer Win7 over XP.

Using computers from MS DOS upto now. Windows 7 64 bits is really the best I used so far. not only for game-playing. It's running smoothly and almost had no driver issues. Invest in memory though. It's really a good investment. And the compatability modes let you use older software just as easy.

Only problem: it does not, I repeat does not fire torpedoes! you must do that yourself :har::har:

I've not had a single problem running SH5. and my machine is underspec'd too.

My specs :-

Windows XP pro. 32bit
Athlon64 3500+ (single core CPU). <----- This is under spec'd. Game's min spec is Core2Duo or Athlon64 X2.
Radeon HD4870 1gb pci-e2 ( but my mobo is pci-e1. so would run even better if i updated my mobo).
RAM 4gb...... but only 3gb is used due to me running 32bit OS.


All settings on max. with 4x AA
i got 50 - 60 fps
in command room 40 - 50 fps
with 10 ships attacking me 20 - 30 fps

Only problems is explsions are sometimes slow due to my single core cpu.
And yes i know i need to upgrade my computer. just trying to stretch as much life out of this hardware as i can. New CPU, mobo and ram soon. well as soon as i can talk my wife round. She's not too keen on me spending $2000 on my hobby.

So as you can see, its not your Operating System causing your problems.

I was considering whether the display drivers i recently changed to were causing the problem. I updated to the drivers that were causing GPU burn outs and when someone on these forums alerted everyone to the problem i quickly downgraded to a lower driver. Not sure how to check seeing as the latest drivers are dangerous to your graphics card lol. :-?

I bought a new hdd and a copy of Win7 home premium 64bit. I setup dual boot as I still need a game port to use my favourite FF joystick and Win 7 does not support them (and try to find a game port lol).

SH5 I find works somewhat better, but as in XP, if you don't turn off vertical sync your mouse will get bad stutters (not frame rate).

I skipped Vista; gotta say I'm very impressed with 7 so far.

Went from XP to Win7 64 bit.....I can recommend it for sure. Runs smooth as silk.

I just upgraded from WinXP to Win7. The box came with both the 32 and 64 bit disks :)

If you are using particular hardware, like gameport devices or MIDI instruments, then you have to use the 32-bit version. Otherwise, go for 64 bits. I'm using a dual boot 32/64 because I still use an old gameport joystick.

Must say that I'm very impressed with W7. Seems as stable as a rock and I've had no compatibility issues with any applications or hardware. :up:
