I spotted a cargo in the fall of 41 and moved to make a surface attack. It was a clear night and I swore IO could make out a deck gun on the stern housing.
But, it did not fire so I assumed I was mistaken.

I opened fire at about 2,000 meters as I approached form his starboard side slightly off his bow. I continued to fire hitting him with every round until I got to about 300 meters even less. I was now about to pass him off his starboard stern when he opened fire on me point blank.
I turned my deck gun (I always man each station never turn it over to the PC) and fired into the gun station hitting it but after two direct hits it fired again and I began a dive to avoid losing senior well trained crew members going to flank and as I was now directly off his stern i began a starboard turn so I could line up a torpedo shot.
My boat was in shambles with virtually every compartment taking on water but I knew it was not fatal.
Before I got half way into the turn my crew began to cheer meaning the enemy ship was considered sunk and I resurfaced to finish my repairs.
I know some deck guns have limited arcs of fire but this guy could have opened up on me at any range considering my slightly of his beam position but he did not until I put a round into the gun station.
This is unusual as many ships open fire at ridiculously long ranges like 10,000 meters unlikely for guns without better control devises.

Then there are some of the American tankers that once they go to attack mode they slow to less than a knot and I have to head straight for them then turn off their beam which takes time at 8X but they become easy shots.

Just a couple weird things I have seen lately I never saw previously.

Looks like you poked the hornets nest with a stick when you fired at the gun station.

It certainly wasn't a Q ship because the guns are hidden from view inside the cargo on deck.
