View Full Version : [1xTC] U-69's 2nd war patrol
Aaaand here we go again. :yeah:
Few changes to the last thread.
- No enigma used this time. (easier for everyone to follow)
- No KTB pages posted until AFTER the patrol when I will make a single PDF available for whoever is interested on reading it. This so whoever is following the patrol will get around the same amount of info as BdU would get if this was a real patrol.

This is great. Funny story. One of my friends did this with SHIV. Took him a week to get to his patrol grid. He set up a VPN to his home PC from work, and would VNC in to check the status when he wasn't home. He told me that he did this for about 2 weeks. He said he would turn the volume up so when he was asleep, the crew would wake him if they saw anything.
He said this worked pretty well and he was able to sink a few ships and shoot down a plane ...till one particular evening.
He told me that one night, while patrolling around some islands, he was suddenly awakened to the crew screaming and a horrendous screeching and crashing. He vaulted out of bed, stumbled and fell flat on his face. He said by the time he got to his computer he noticed men down on deck, and all he could see was the sky.
Seems he hit one of those little invisible sand bars that don't show up on the map. He was able to reverse and get off the sand bar, but his sub was seriously borked, and when he backed off the sand to deep water, it sank with all hands.
That was the end of his "Real Time Sub Captain Career", because he never did it again after that, and any time it was brought up his face would cloud over and he'd glare at you.
So of course this spawned a whole series of jokes about "Captain Sand Bar", much to his frustration.

X1 TC War patrol = somebody's nucking futs! :haha:
However..... the guy who does a X1 TC war patrol, has more leg to stand on when it comes to realism arguments then anyone else in the forum. Everyone elses views on realism are all automatically disqualifed while in the awe inspiring presence of a X1 TC captain. :salute: :O:

Well he did have save games set up, but he was destined to only use them in case of hardware failure with his computer.
When I asked him about reloading he glared at me and said "That's not real, and the whole point of this thing was realism. Those dudes didn't get do overs!"
I then told him "They didn't all stand there on deck and watch their submarine ram a sand bar either."
He just grumbled at me.
I talked to him about SH5 the other day, and he mentioned getting it, and trying another 1xTC with it - he was unaware of the DRM nonsense. I told him that it was impossible to have a REAL 100% Realism 1xTC patrol because they didn't have internet back then. He was like "What are you talking about!?" I just laughed and said "You'll see." Sure enough about 2 days later I get an e-mail:
"WHAT THE HELL IS THIS BULL****!?"

hey dowly,

although we didn't get any action til now, this thread promises entertainment! :)
hey dowly,

Depends where I am (in the game). I learned that there isn't many threats out on the open sea, so I just keep the game running normally. If I'm close to something that might potentially turn my patrol titties up I submerge and continue at ahead slow.
Same for running the game when I'm asleep. Tho, I have my headphones next to my couch and volume cranked on max so I hear if something VERY bad happens such as explosion or the boat hitting something.
Oh how I miss the dialog that let's you decide what action the crew takes when contact is met. Would make life a little bit easier.
Your first 1x patrol was a great story, I had much fun reading reports. I hope, second patrol will be even better. But I can`t see a map with your position - have you abandoned that cool idea?
Anyway, good luck to you, and BE MORE AGRESSIVE! :arrgh!:
BTW, what mods do you use?
But I can`t see a map with your position - have you abandoned that cool idea?
Yes, I decided not to use the OS map for this one. I had in mind of using just simple google maps coordinates ontop of an KM Grid map, but I'm leaving that to the KTB.
In the meantime, if you really want to, you can use this site to change my KM grid position to lon/lat coordinates and input them to google maps or something to see my position:
http://ubootwaffe.net/quadrant.cgi
BTW, what mods do you use?
Not many;
Accurate German flags
Freecam tweak
Command keys
Das Boot menu thingy
Mighty fine crew
Improved atlantic waves
Muss I Denn bunker music
Capthelm's audio mod
Pin-up (gotta have titties)
Revised engine telegraph
Critical hits 1.1 torpedoes
Own mod to (maybe) disable the torpedoman's passive abilities
Zoomable external cam

Own mod to (maybe) disable the torpedoman's passive abilities
Yes please, how do you do that?
Yes please, how do you do that?
I`m not Dowly, but I`ll try to answer. All crew abilities are in this file:
Silent hunter 5\data\UPCDataGE\UPCCrewData\SpecialAbilities.upc
You can edit skill as you want.
By the way, you can check my mod (http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=164996). It changes crew skills and removes most of crew magic powers like increasing torpedo speed/damage.
Yes please, how do you do that?
I haven't actually tested it yet, but it kinda makes sense. :O:
Right /data/UPCdataGE/UPCcrewData/SpecialAbilities.upc
Open with notepad and scroll down to the torpedo man's passive abilities. The numbers marked with red mean how much + or - the given ability gives bonus in percentage. I've already changed the torpedo speed/damage values to zero, just do the same with the other lines marked in red. The same file has all the abilities, both passive and active for all your crew members.
But again, as I said, I haven't tested this against a target, all I know at this point that it doesn't crash my game and my torpedoes still run (tho, no idea on what speed :DL).

I kind of figured that was it.
I noticed the other night saved a game while stalking a convoy in heavy fog. Load a save and poof the fog was gone. But about an hour after pounding the crap out of that convoy the fog returned. Maybe its like how your soundman wont pick up contacts for a minute or two after a load game.
Anyhow back to your patrol sailor :salute:

I've always thought fog was typically allergic to strong winds i.e. when there's one there isn't the other.
I expect that's not an absolute, but would be interested to know how frequently, and where, one encounters both at the same time. Anyone know? I suppose I can google/research....
Then again, 'fog' might mean spume/spray/'sea mist'.
Not wishing to come across as trying to find things to criticise; I'm genuinely interested. Anyone with extensive r/l experience?
Anyone with extensive r/l experience?
Nope, but I found this:
Over the sea, the same effect is quite common in some areas. This is when moist air flows across the sea towards colder waters; the cooling gives Advection Fog that we call Sea Fog. First, it is important to note that sea fog can occur at any time of day and with quite strong winds. With winds over about F 4-5, the result may be low cloud and poor visibility rather than fog. In the English Channel, sea fog can occur at any time of the year but seems to be more common in the late Spring and early to mid-Summer when the water inshore is still fairly cold.
