Hi all,

Can anyone tell me if im going nuts or this is a real issue?

When I enter the hydrophone station submerged, I can hear the engines louder than even the background noise of the sea, I am finding it very hard to pick out any sound contacts like this. Plus the engine sounds, sound like the diesels not the electrics :?

The only way to listen for targets is to go to all stop, as it is still a major issue at ahead slow.

I can't remember this being an issue in the previous SH titles!

Any ideas would be much appreciated :)

Do u mean the diesel engines?

Hydrophone works submerged and so only at slow speeds. Try different depths but most use 40 meters.

Perhaps its an upgrade-issue. The gear gets a lot more sensitive later in the war...

I have always stopped the engines before using the hydrophone. Even when playing SHIII I always ordered us to stop first.

The electric engines are running, I usually listen at about 60m where possible for 1 hour at 2 - 3 hour intervals. But I hear what sounds more like the diesels running.

I always listen at ahead slow.

And I upgraded the hydrophone before my first patrol, perhaps this is why, I might try the patrol again with the original hydrophones!

Thanks for that Robbo! To be honest I've always stopped to listen for something I haven't heard yet, but this really came to light when a destroyer got with 2km of my bow and I didn't hear him. Only doing a periscope sweep before completing my surfacing revealed him to me.

Perhaps it is just me being an idiot

Someone more experienced will have to answer.

I belive 1h is mooore than enough. In theory I would stop every now and then if I suspect enemy traffic. Go to 40m, cut engines and do a full sweep or 2. No need to linger on, of you go and repeat at your leisure.

You should have to stop motors to hear much accurately, at least thats the way it was for me in SH3.
But what I cant figure out right now is how to rotate the thing at all. I mouse over the wheel, it highlights, but clicking does nothing but pan my view either left or right clicking. Adn i've tried on both the wheel and the dial which both highlight when pointer is in them. But I cannot operate anything. So so far it's useless to man this thing myself cause I cannot rotate it.
There's also a volume knob to the right of the wheel, that also highlights when pointer is on it, but it too does nothing when clicking on it.

Move your cursor over the display, then use your mouse wheel to rotate.
Home and End keys can also be used for quicker rotation.

Ahhh hah, the mousewheel............didnt think of that. Probably my old SH3 thinking still trying to remain. Thanks mate, I'll give that a try later.:salute:

Yes I often in SH3 would man the sonar myself, cause it seemed I could hear things he could not. It seemed to me he would only report something if he had identified exactly what it was, if it was just a faint sound he'd keep his mouth shut.
I'd located many contacts this way that I wouldn't have otherwise. And likewise up on the bridge, I could spot something on the horizon long before my watch crew did.

Thanks for the replies gents, it is starting to look like an error in my ways, than an error with the hydrophones.

Still baffled by the destroyer I didnt hear 2km on my bow, with the upgraded hydrophones at all stop! Then again when I checked in the periscope, he was travelling backwards at high speed... think something might have messed up there lol

Cheers
