Hopefully some people will see prison time for this kind of stuff.

I doubt it. It's hard to get prosecutions against big companies like Ubisoft.
...oh, wait, you mean...

If those guys would be smart enough to see that the long term damage is to their own disadvantage. But some people never learn from history, even if it repeats itself every year (like the DRM/cracking race).

I would have liked them to ignore SHV entirely, not even cracking it. Then the sales would have told us a little about (casual and old) customers' tolerance of OSP/DRM and the importance of product state for their buying decision. It simply is just totally nuts what they are doing now. I wonder whether they all went to school in Rhode Island.

Pretty high-tech stuff. Planning the attack in Piratebay's comments and executing it using PING and it actually works? :haha:

It´s the perfect excuse for UBI... We are under attack !! :D ....

....but we use a very small server to save money and banwith for another games and we are not interested in SH players and no mention about traffic and thousand savegames up and down

I´m just wondering...
How many "pingers" one must gather to get those kind of server down? :o
Wow, I must say I´m quite impressed

I´m guessing the pirates wont stop until UBI drops DRM or start legal procedures against them

Thousands of people wanna play and 5 pingers prevent that, do I miss something ?

Yeah, if a bunch of guys reading a thread somewhere can "ping" Ubisoft to a halt (unless, of course, the collective readership of said thread is greater than the entire Subsim community), then, yeah, it looks like there'll be a lot of problem times ahead for Ubisoft...

It's not like there isn't looooads of simple software products about that can
be installed on a server to prevent DOS attacks.

Even some domestic anti-virus packets have it.

Sure it's not a hoax? Could just be a handful of jokers throwing more confusion into the mix. *shrug*

seems correct.
who really thinks that large scale DDOS-attacks are announced on public forums before?? don't make me laugh about your unsophistication.

and no, Neal, there's no prison for high-school jokes.

I believe that´s the fact.
UBI is making some weird excuses if the problem is lack of competence by their part. Next time they will put the blame on something else like "the janitor tripped on the power cable and unplugged the server by accident"?

Try to ping the FBI servers for a while, I´m sure it turns out the joke isn´t that funny anymore :woot:

Notice how it's generally the weekends, which I suspect is related to the number of people attempting to log in. The supposed attacks are nothing but an excuse for poor servers, something which many of us predicted would happen.

Hartmann

Perhaps they are moving the server from one unsafe place to a better one :hmmm:

first: I don't know their IP-adresses.
second: I'm not interested in their IP-adresses
third: I've got no time for pinging their IP-adresses
fourth: even if I did, I expect Jodie Foster to show up
fifth: if you think that FBI should be involved into UBI's U-p(ay but cannot p)lay politics, I smile inwardly

Guess what this whole discussion is? Pretty useless as it won't make any difference... We will know at some point in the future whether it was or was not an attack. I am pretty sure it will come out one way or another.

I wouldn't know.... I'm still playing SH5. And i aint logging off till monday. Otherwise i might not be able to reconnect to there overloaded servers.

It's got to be a joke or hoax or whatever. Not even UBI would be stupid enough to leave their servers - which have already crashed and burned once - hanging out in space without disabling/blocking ICMP traffic.

Dosn't speak for the quality of the hoster INTERNAP.COM when a simple ICMP DDOS is reaching the real destiantion servers.

Normaly this crap traffic is filterd by either the Firewall (well if they have one in front) or at least by the loadbalancer. Even if they don't use high "intelligence" equipment to detect traffic anomalys the pure limiters from the core devices should have filtered out 80% of such traffic.

Dos attack or crap servers?

Doesn't really matter does it? What matters is that I was quite happily playing SHV and was suddenly booted out of my game, was also unable to log back on. I've lost everything I did after my last save and I find it really quite annoying.

Just hoping that (assuming UBI can't keep the servers stable at the weekend - when we all want to play) UBI decide to drop the stupid DRM that keeps paying customers from playing the game they've bought.

The other thing that was mentioned on here last night is - how long before the modders give up? If they can't play test then they cant mod, I don't doubt that UBI will patch again , but we all know its the modders who will actually shape the game the way we want it.

/ Rant over :D

Edit to add: I'm going back to playing Eve at the weekends till UBI sorts it out. Eve is a proper MMO with stable servers - UBI please note !

QFT, a big company should be able to protect their servers. But if their servers are from same quality as SH5... go figure...

My biggest surprise is they didn't try this on day one for both SH5 and Assassins Creed 2. That would've been a media coup and really left ubi with egg on their faces, somewhat like take 2 and Bioshock on 2007 (but that was their servers being inadequate)

Bilge_Rat
03-14-10, 07:39 AM
Is there an attack?

I had zero issues logging on and playing SH5 this weekend..and this from a very weak wireless connection.

It's either a hoax or Ubisoft is getting the upper hand over those criminals.

Agree, never have seen such moronic attempt before.
First telling the world what they are up to, next do a bunch of pings and as a result UBI's server crashes?????
:har::har::har:

Com on ppl, don't believe every thing so easily.

Hoax or not at least someone is willing to continue the fight unlike alot of people here.

Carry on people if you can play then do it.

I am still waiting for them to hack UBI and delete your saves. Talk about a roflmao-copter.

Just so you know - you're not fighting in my name, all I want to is play my game when I want to.

Also I doubt many save their games online now - I know I don't , so there would be very little to hack into I would imagine :03:

with the right software you can have one computer sending many pings a second to a server. add in a few more computers and the job is done.

Well, according to that screen shot they used the sophisticated batch file approach.

I was under the impression that, that was the main reason behind their wonderful "have" to be online to play idea, which was to give the player the ability to save the games online. Its possible I may have misunderstood. If so that's good for the ones who bought it as it is one less thing you have to worry about. As for the simplicity of how UBI's servers crash, that is another issue all together. But I doubt this is serious.

Yeah there's a option to disable the online saves. It still saves - but to your computer.

I think I read somewhere that the online saves where unreliable, but I just didn't like the idea to be honest.

After the server crashed by ping overload, the Ubi-tech are trying to figure out how to fix the issue.

Also after watching the mods, I am seriously thinking that the modders are more skilled and smart than the lazy pizza eater's developers at UBI.:DL

But then Ubistank will have to close their doors and SH series will die....oh wait... you mean the hackers :yeah:

server do not have to answer a ping request and do the other activities well. If this was unprotected then it's a quite a lesson for ubi. But why should we suffer because of that? I'm wainting for offline mod.

That would be nice. What jollies does someone get from attacking a server or making a virus. It is a damn inconvience and sometimes a monetary inconvience when you need to buy a program to get rid of a virus. I'm cleaning up my girls computer of a virus. It is damn frustrating. Hopefully UBI will throw in the towel on the next patch and be done with this DRM.

:yeah: If we are gonna dream...dream big I say.

I would think Starforce would have taught Ubistank a lesson.... yet they now implement something 100X worse...didnt think that was possible.
