I use the res fix mod and that appears to work for me..

Also if you have an Nvidia card I recomend useing 'Nhancer' app to bump up the graphics

16xAA and 16XAF for me :)

Thanks. it says that this is for Xp SP2....does it work on windows 7?

Windows 7 has the ability to run programs in compatiblity modes. Just right click the exacutable for the agme and click the compatiblity mode tab. You may have to check the box that says to run it in a compatiblity mode first and then select the windows xp service pack two mode and everything should work just fine.

That said, I don't use that mod my self so I don't know what will hapen exactly.

My game rig is currently running WIN7 Pro 64 and I'm able to use the "XP SP2" ResFIX just fine! No need to use "Compatability Mode" - She's running smooth as silk at 1440x900

Actually I'd love too... but for some damn reason CTRL-F11 isn't working to take a screenie (probably a MOD that I installed) and I just tried FRAPS and that's just causing CTD's... So I don't have a clue at the moment :damn:

By the way, that fix doesn't work for me no matter what.

Windows 7 64bit, ati radeon 4730... it launches and I get a "loading icon" for infinite time, I have to run task manager and kill the process, no image at all just black screen.

YukonJack_AK
03-14-10, 06:22 AM
Nevermind - I finally got FRAPS to take a couple of pictures (still can't get CTRL-F11 to work though :damn: )

Anyways here's a couple of screenies at 1440x900 with 2xAA and 2xAF :D

Yeah - Realize that now...:damn: Anyone know why hitting PrtScr to take a screenie would cause SH3 to CTD?

I have the same issue with PrtScn crashing the game while using the resfix too.

Ctrl-F11 works, but it can also sometimes crash the game for me.

Mmmm... I have Win7 64 bits and the fix for high res doesn't work at all, when I launch the game I get a black screen for 1 second, come back to desktop in 1024x768 with an error of APPCRASH. When hitting Ok in the error window it simply changes back to the desktop resolution and leave me in desktop wondering why it works for others...

Any idea? It is a real pity, specially knowing that it should work. I have tried to run it at 1680x1050, 1280x1024, even a custom 1400x1050. No success.

BTW, I test it in SH3+1.4b+GWX3, nothing more :dead:

Thanks for any idea!

EDIT: SH3 works perfectly with stqndqrd resolution in my Win7 64, no need for run as admin or compatibility mode. Nevertheless I have tested that witht he HiRes and does not work neither.

It works for me, but I have a serious problem.

I am Windows 7 64bit, SH3 1.4b + GWX3.0

I altered the config file so that my resolution is 1920 x 1080. The game looks absolutely fantastic. It now stretches the screens to my full 23" widescreen display, and the graphics are just breathtaking in detail.

HOWEVER, I have a serious problem.

Whenever I go into the periscope or uzo, and click on the scope so as to be able to turn the periscope left or right, WHEN I CLICK AGAIN TO COME OUT OF TURNING THE SCOPE THE TORPEDO FIRE BUTTON IS ACTIVATED, LAUNCHING A TORPEDO!

I have uninstalled all other mods and I still have this behavior. I also notice some of the function keys past F7 are erratic.

What would cause this?

I am using a GTX285 with the last nvidia drivers 197.13. Has someone my same configuration and has succeed to run it a high resolution?

I don't know what to do, and I installed my OS very recently, it is fresh and nice, so I don't think that a reinstall could help.

Thanks for any help to solve this problem

Had the same problem as I too have a 23" monitor that natively supports 1920x1080. Everytime I clicked off the scope, It would fire a fish. Not sure why, but the game "centers" the mouse over a specific location of the GUI when you're in "free-look" at the scope. And due where it centers the mouse, when you click it happens to be right on top of the Fire Button. Thats why I set my resolution back to 1440x900... Game still looks fantastic and no more accidental launches.

I have tested by changing the main.cfg in game folder and in My Documents, putting the same resolution than in d3d9.cfg. No luck and no changes.

On the other hand the widescreen d3d9.dll works nicely at any resolution, only that it doesn't scale the hud, and I wanted to use OLC's or the MaGUI 2+...

Nobody has an idea or suggestion, please?

EDIT: To the people here that are lucky enough to enjoy in HiRes, could tell me please which version of DX9 do you have installed. I allowed the SH3 install to do its thing, but just in case...

Thanks for the tip, Yukon Jack!

Another possibility is to install Hitman's Optics, which re-positions all the fire control controls, and maybe the fire button will be in a different place! The only thing I don't like about Hitman's Optics is it goes back to 6X magnification instead of 10X.

I don't know what version of DX9 I'm running, darkbluesky. How can you find out?

Hi i've just added this to my SH3 directory but i'm unsure as how to change the main.cfg to have monitor settings for 1440x900. Is there a guide somewhere? :hmmm:

maillemaker
03-25-10, 04:10 PM
Yes, in the download section on subsim it describes what to do.

It is not, however, included in the readme for the mod!!!

As I remember from last night you just edit the config file (can't remember what it was called) and enter in whatever resolution you want. It's obvious what the entries are to edit.

There are 4 files to copy into your SH3 directory. That is included in the readme file.

Simply browse to Ubisoft\Silent Hunter 3 and look for a file that is called .cfg and open it.Then look for an entry that alters resolution,as maillemaker mentioned this entry should be obvious as the current resolution will be displayed next to it,then edit the file to your desired resolution, then at the top of the screen click 'file' then 'save' then 'save as' ,then overwrite it,and then close the edit screen.
This then should enable the resolution you want.

NOTE: always have a backup of your original .cfg file, just in case. And do this with any other file you decide to edit in the future.

Same here but I was able to get the attack periscope zoom level back to 10x... I just can't remember exactly what I did. :hmmm: I'm looking now and will let you know when I figure it out

I have uninstalled SH3 and reinstalled in compatibility mode XP, and it does-not-work. I have tested with stock+1.4b+no_dvd_thing.

I have also reinstalled the DX9 that comes with SH3 disc, no luck. Tested with DX9 from july 2008, no success.

Always the same error. I use the last nvidia drivers.

Widescreen fix works ok, though. A pity that it has not an option to scale the 2D screens...

I changed my resolution to 1440x900 as YukonJack suggested and it works fine - now when you exit the periscope/uzo it does not fire a torpedo.

I think I'm going to install some of the alternative UZO/periscope torpedo control mods so that the fire button is moved so I can go back to 1920 x 1080.

Darkblue, I don't know what your problem is. I am running Windows 7 64bit Professional, Core i7-930 on an Asus P6T SE motherboard. I installed SH3 in its default folder (it went in the x86 program files folder), and installed GWX3 using the default options also.

My graphics card is an Nvidia GeForce 5500 with 1GB of ram. I used the drivers that came on the CD with it.

The hi-res mod works fine for me. Only problem is it crashes to desktop if I hit print-screen to take a screen shot.

Last night I torpedoed my first enemy submarine ever and hit print-screen to try and get a screen shot and the game crashed. :(

I tested it in Windows7 32 bits, and it does not work neither :x ! And the drivers were not the last ones, they are the previous ones. So now, I am really lost.

Anout the AA, the AA only works using the HiRes fix? I have tried in NV control panel and also using nhancer and it does not work (of course without the HiRes fix, which is the main problem currently).

YukonJack_AK

I run two installations - one with and one without the resfix (for some reasons the one WITH the Resfix has been randomly CTD lately and I can't figure it out... worked fine for ages... maybe a MOD issue :06:) and I run BOTH with Antialaising set at 8xQ in the NVidia Control Panel. I'm running a Galaxy GeForce 9800GT 1GB with the 196.21 series drivers. Funny though - the game will not work at AA settings higher than 2x unless you choose 8xQ or 16xQ. Don't remember what the "Q" stands for but it works ;)

@Darkbluesky - PM me and I can send you my NVidia Settings from the Control Panel for SH3. Maybe it can help...

I tried this rez fix and wish I hadn't. It ran ok when starting in port but when I saved the patrol it wouldn't reload, just CTDed. started in port again ok but again when saved the save CTDed, this happened every time. Also I could not run the game faster than x64 if I tried it CTDed. Tried all sorts of cures but none worked in the end I did a complete reinstall but as expected my saved carear did not work so after 14 sucessful patrols I have to start all over again, what I get for trying it on vista 32 I guess.

Hi guys,

I'm a noob to this forum stuff so I'll try to relay to you the fix I found in the Subsim forums for this issue. It has completely resolved my problems which were pretty much identical to Maillemaker.

Link: [URL="http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showpost.php?p=1517282&postcount=6"]

If I didn't do that right, here's the text:

"Firstly, you need to check your activated mods to see if any contain the following file: menu_1024_768.txt (A windows searcg for this file name should show all locations of this file)

If they do, you need to deactivate and create backup copies.

Depending on whether any mods use it depends on how many times you need to make the following changes:

The following items are from the default menu_1024_768.txt in GWX 3.0 - If the block numbers are different, you can just search for the term "Name=Torp launch".

Find you copies of the menu_1024_768.txt (usually this is C:\Program Files\.....\data\Menu) and right-click and choose Open With - Notepad.

Once the file is open, hit Ctrl+F to bring up the search function and look for these blocks:

When you're happy & done, save the file.

This will make every Torpedo Launch button in the game unclickable, meaning the only way to launch is to use Ctrl+Enter. Let me know if there's any problems".

Many thanks to Danlisa for making this post!

This has completely resolved my issues in GWX3 at 1920x1080. And the torps still fire by mouse click on my system.

I agree with you Maillemaker, SH3 is a beautiful experience at 1920x1080, especially when using my 46" Samsung LED TV as a monitor:woot:

Happy Hunting in high res:up:

With my rig - NVidia 540M - I can use any of the widescreen mods. At 1366x768. But not at high-rez. The only high-res mod that I have gotten to run with my system is Van1920x1080, and it's gives me great performance. I highly recommend it.

I talked about this in the Windows 7 thread (http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showpost.php?p=2246910&postcount=445) but didn't get a reply, so I thought I'd put it in a thread more to do with this particular subject.

Anything I try seems to make no difference, I just get 1024x768. I'm running Windows 7 64Bit with SH3 from Steam (1.4b) with SH3 Commander and 2 Mods (4GB and HiResFix). My monitor is 1600x1200 with a ATI Radeon 4850 card, so I don't even need Widescreen, just HiRes. I've tried everything I can think of, apart from doing a clean install of SH3(though I could try that, assuming I don't lose my Career?).

Can anyone who has used the HiRes fix successfully please tell me what they did?

Thanks...

J.

Ok, I've actually figured out how to save my career and reload it if needed, so I did a uninstall and reinstall, and still no luck, I can't get anything other than 1024x768.

Only difference from my previous posts is I realised that I got the game from Gamersgate, not Steam.

Any ideas or suggestions at all? Do any of the supermods (GWX or NYGM) give HiRes as well?

Thanks...

Hello Jasonb,

I eventually found a satisfactory solution for using the "SH3_XPSP2_Res_Fix_for_1.4b" with SH3.
Before starting SH3 Commander, I change my screen res to 1024*768, and then when SH3 gets to the Main Menu screen, I change my screen res to 1600*1200 and the game plays perfectly well.

My OS is W7.
Graphics are AMD Radeon HD 6570
The mods I use are:
GWX3
GWX - Captain America's Officer Icons
GWX - Enhanced Damage Effects
GWX - Integrated Orders
GWX - No Medals on Crew
LifeBoats&Debris_v4

I eventually found this solution worked for me after a lot of trial and error.
It works for me even without changing the screen res figures in the relevant cfg files mentioned in the various threads relating to this problem.
It is a bit of a pain, having to change the screen res twice, before playing the game, but that's a very small price to pay for what is a very immersive game.
I can only re-iterate, keep trying, keep looking on these excellent forums, where there is a lot of expertise, because SH3 combined with GWX3 is an awesome game, even after almost a decade.:yeah:

Thanks for your reply U-15. I tried this (set to 1024x768, run the game, then set to 1600x1200) but still no joy, the game still runs in 1024x768.

Just a couple of quick questions...

1. Is it noticeable immediately (i.e. in the main menu screen) if it's higher than 1024x768, or do you have to run a mission before you see the higher resolution?

2. Are you running the game in full screen or windowed mode?

3. Are you running the executable in Windows XP compatability mode?

4. How do you get from the Main Screen back to Windows to change the Resolution, do you just use Alt-Tab?

Thanks...

Hello Jasonb,

Sorry about the delay in replying, but whilst on shore leave my base commander (the wife) had urgent missions for me to attend to.

Before I answer your questions, can I just clarify a point I made in my first post relating to this problem.
I do change the screen resolution figures in the d3d9.cfg file which is part of the "SH3_XPSP2_Res_Fix_for_1.4b" package, but I do not alter any other .cfg files.
I apologise if I have mislead you in any way.
This is how my d3d9.cfg file looks:

-----

setGamma=0
gammaRed=1.0
gammaGreen=1.0
gammaBlue=1.0

-----
The amended screen res figures are in yellow.

Anyway in answer to your questions:

1. The change in resolution from 1024*768 to 1600*1200 happens immediately on selecting the larger size resolution.
I notice it straight away at the Main Menu screen before I have selected my career

2. Windowed mode.
I haven't tried this in full-screen mode

3. I haven't selected compatibility mode for SH3 Commander or SH3 itself

4. When I want to change the screen resolution, I left click the rectangular peek button on the right hand side of the taskbar, it says "Show desktop" when you hover the mouse over it.
Note my operating system is Windows7, I don't think XP or earlier had this function

In summarising Jason, I went through a lot of trial and error before this worked for me.
I searched and trawled through these forums on Subsim, Google etc.
I tried nearly all of the solutions that others had found worked for them, but to no avail in my case.

There was an instance when I thought I'd got the proper solution for it to work straight away at 1600*1200 without having to first select 1024*768, but that only worked when starting off with SH3 directly. As soon as I started using SH3 Commander to load the game, it defaulted to 1024*768.

I just happened to stumble on this solution as I was doing a fresh install of SH3, SH3 Commander etc.
To ensure it worked permanently, I did a fresh re-install straight away, documenting what I did as I did it.

I hope you do manage to find a solution, because 1024*768 on a 22 inch monitor is not very nice at all.

Let us all know how you get on, because you may find a solution that nobody else has tried yet, or you may find a solution working for you that others couldn't get to work for them.

All the best
U-15.

Thanks for your reply U-15, I appreciate it.

I only ever play the game in full-screen mode, so I thought after reading your post that going to Windowed mode might make a difference.

I followed your instructions, changing the resolution in the .cfg file that comes with the patch, and then changing the screen resolution to 1024x768. Then I ran SH3 Commander and launched SH3. In windowed mode it only takes up approx. 50% of my screen, maybe less.

I then went to the desktop and changed the resolution back to 1600x1200. Back in SH3, the windowed mode now takes up the full screen. Is that what you get too?

However, I don't know if it's actually 1600x1200 or just the monitor displaying 1024x768 full screen (if that makes sense). For example, if I play the game in 1024x768 in full screen mode, without any HiRes patches, it looks the exact same as the windowed mode after changing to 1600x1200 following your instructions.

I guess what I'm saying is I don't know what the game should look like in 1600x1200, even in the main menu, so I've no idea how to do whether I have it right or not, or whether I just have 1024x768 taking up the full screen. Could you possibly take a screenshot of your main menu in HiRes and post it, so I can compare?

Thanks again...

J.

Ok, I've been looking into this a lot, and I've a general, hopefully simple, question about this HiRes Mod.

Basically, what's it supposed to do? :) I run stock SH3 in Full Screen on my 1600x1200 monitor, and a screenshot shows it runs in 1024x768.

So, is the HiRes Mod meant to run the game in 1600x1200 full screen with better, sharper graphics? Or is it just to allow you to run it in Windowed mode higher than 1024x768?

Does anyone have any before/after screenshots to show the difference between running HiRes and not?

Thanks...

J.
