View Full Version : UBI Site - Can't access at all

Everything about SH5 support seems to be going from bad to worse. What is going on. What on earth are they up to????????
Title says it all. 1522 EST (Atlanta GA USA) and I've just installed SHV. I can't communicate with the server, I can't register for a UBI account, I can't play my new SHV. I have high-speed access to the net, including this forum, and everything else about my specs passed the installation test w/SHV.
Are the $#%&ing UBI servers under a DOS attack, or can I expect this crap to continue off and on indefinitely, I wonder?
Any of you play today?
Oh well, I guess I should have listened to my gut and much of this community and not bought this buggy software until AFTER they removed the DRM. Sure wish I could comment on how good/bad SHV is, but since I can't even get the game to run (since I can't connect to UBI) I can't.
Back to SH3/GWX for me.

I doubt they are under attack, that was simply an excuse. It's either scheduled downtime (World of Subcraft!), or their servers simply cannot cope with the volume of traffic using them. Personally, the latter sounds likely.
Edit: Saturday night, everyone trying to log in and play their games. The system simply can't handle all those logins.

Lovely, ain't it? I have a feeling SHV will be a superb game once UBI gets out of the way with this insane DRM-scheme and lets us actually play it long enough to start fixing it! A few more weeks of these "can't connect" problems though and I fear the SH series is toast. Why buy software you cant ever play?

What could have been an outstanding game has turn into a massive disappointment for all the loyal sub sim folks...
1) Lessons learned... ever heard of this phase Ubi?
2) Why didn't you build on SH3/SH4 interface? 4 vers of the interface and you toss it to the wind... why? Just to confuse us?
3) Bubbles... are you kidding me?
4) This game is missing many important commands...
5) The graphics are outstanding...
6) DRM wasn't a big deal UNTIL after a week I can't access your servers!
Not sure why the game was released without SUSIM BETA testers going through it with a fine tooth comb. It is painfully obvious that very little beta testing was done (or ubi deceided not to correct the issues).
I recommend you patch this game quickly or it will ruin your repuation and future income stream (might be too late). :o

They are insane!:damn: (Why can't they just say - We apologise to our patient customers but we are having to work on our servers to improve your gaming experience, they will be back on in approx x hours). That would be so much better. Also an update as to how the next patch is coming along would be most welcome too. They are currently commiting professional suicide. :o How odd........ As for DRM - Someone ought to let them know it was a waste of time as the game has already been hacked to by pass this. You have to laugh, (Or Cry)! :timeout:

Haven't you heard? Ubisoft don't care about the PC Games market anymore, they throw out substandard products (no pun intended) with DRM that doesn't work and means you can't even play the SINGLE PLAYER GAME you purchased.

Hopefully next time a game gets released with ridiculously draconian DRM, we'll be more unified in boycotting the nonsense so these companies stop treating their customers like this.
And I wouldn't blame anyone for using questionable means in order to play the game they paid for.
It's the last ubi game I ever buy.
I just hope that at some point in the games future they let go of SH5 from the DRM.

Wasn't there a 'press release' from a pirate group announcing that as Ubisoft had said that 'if the game servers go down, they would release a patch to remove DRM', then the pirate group said that they were going to take the server down with a DDOS?
I don't know how true that is, because obviously Ubisoft said that in the context of the servers being retired, not denied, but did that press release actually occur? It can't all be a big Ubisoft conspiracy, unless they are posting false reports, or false press releases before their servers go down? They aren't that smart.

The Far Cry 2 forums imply otherwise.
I highly doubt any of the hackers attacking Ubi's servers remotely care about SH5. Mostly it's over Far Cry 2 and some of their other ladder ranked games.
I contacted Play.com today and told them the situation and they have agreed to take back my copy and refund me.

I don't think they are using a ZX Spectrum powered by a hamster, because the servers did at one point work. The ZX Spectrum requires a nine volt power supply, which the hamster in its native form cannot supply. If Ubi were using a hamster powered ZX Spectrum, then no one would have been able to play SH5 or AC2 at all.
Since you cannot play you got plenty time to go read again all those nice posts supportive of DRM from people with 24/24 7/7 online connections that work without problem.

Don't diss the Speccy - it has enough processing power to run a nuclear power station don't you know (according to Your Sinclair)! I never did find out though, if that was with or without the memory upgrade (and neither did they).
It could of course be numerous drug-infused hamsters working in a serial connection mode, which will reach about 9.1 volts

Not even Ubisoft would be so... but my God it would make sense... yes... after six days on hard drugs... of course, right now those hamsters are all on a major crash... that would perfectly explain the cyclical nature of the downtime.
well... the DRM was announced here and everybody who has now bought sh5 and was fooled should have known better. i,m very fine with sh3 and gwx and have plenty plenty time to wait :-)

Give them a break, think of the hamsters and the speccy with its dodgy joystick interface that if pulled out or moved while on would ruin the whole setup.
Can't you see, we are talking about a very sensitive setup here.
Nothing is wrong.
Everything is exactly as it should.
You do not play when you want to play.

I've no idea of course, but I'd speculate that the cause is a combination of DDOS and VIPDOS.
DDOS is not that hard to do - anyone can ping the server.
VIPDOS is not that hard to do - anyone with the game can try to play it.
BTW, if the hackers were really serious, they'd be trying PDOS attacks, which are less resource intensive than DDOS attacks but much more damaging...now that is something you don't want to hear.

We expected occasional downtime from the Ubi servers, but NO ONE ( I REPEAT NO ONE) predicted a pirate group would launch a DDOS attack on the servers. I mean the pirates are meant to be on our side right? But they're the ones stopping us playing!

Permanent denial of service. Hardware sabotage that usually means a replacement or reinstallation to get things working again. Basically an attack on firmware (phlashing) to render the hardware useless.
One person could do more damage to the system than thousands of "pingers" could ever hope to achieve.

Actually, mookiemookie speculated this back in February. A few people commented, but I think the idea was largely ignored as being "doomsday naysaying"...or perhaps even simply not understood.
Still, the suggestion was out there, so if buyers chose to not consider it a possibility (you know, because they had fast and stable(TM) internet connections)...

I totally expected it, given that the protection scheme requires a constant intarwebs connection. It was just begging for attack. *shrug*

Sorry Nisgeis, but I agree wholeheartedly with Fincuan, John W. Hamm, and the others on this one...
It was UbiSoft and UbiSoft alone who decided that an always-on internet connection was needed to play this game. In doing so, they left themselves wide open to anyone who wanted to shut them down, and even to the possibility that their own servers could fail...leaving thousands of customers unable to play.
You cannot blame anyone but UbiSoft for what they, themselves decided was the only considered solution to manage the use of their product.
When we (I) bought this game, there was an underlying assumption that if we (I) had an internet connection, we could play (the box specifically states that " A permanent high speed internet connection and creation of a UbiSoft account are required to play this game at all times", but nowhere does it state that we must be connected to the singular non-redundant UbiSoft server, it simply states that we must create an account, and have a permanent connection to the INTERNET )...and it is reasonable to assume that if a UbiSoft server-side error occured that prevented a connection at any one time, that the client software (SHV on our end) would run a diagnostic that confirms we have a connection to said internet...determines that the server is at fault...and allows play as usual. Of course that would assume that UbiSoft had the paying customer in mind when it made it's decison about using this DRM.
Unfortunately, as I stated before, this DRM system is acutally less about piracy (which it does not prevent) and more about controlling customer access to future paid content and upgrades (which it is ideal for, from a targeted marketing prespective).
There are numerous means to protect copyright and piracy, none of which would have been as vulnerable to DDOS attacks...but UbiSoft chose the worst one, and the least effective...leaving themselves open and at the mercy of anyone wishing to shut them down. The only one who you can reasonably blame, is UbiSoft themselves.

I doubt anyone at Ubi is walking around without a towel to mop away sweat right now. Some major wrench has been thrown into the works, be it human error/interference, unforseen circumstances, whatever the case may be. I can imagine some very stressed-out techs working like mad to solve the problem with the deadline being last week.
I'm not going to defend Ubi's current means of software protection, but I try not to forget that there are people who choose to work in that field of technology who really do care about their customers. If I were lead on any of their teams, that team would be celebrated with a hearty meal, plenty of drinks, all at my own expense, once the problems have been resolved.
That said, I hope the connection issues clear up ASAP, for everyone's sake, and now resume my lurkitude. :DL

Well I finally was able to pick up a copy at bb today and of course I cannot get it to run.
I installed it along with the ubi auto patch and when I try to register it says I already have an account and cannot have two accounts off of the same email addy.
OK so I request the forgoten info and it replies with "there is no record of an account on this email addy".
So it thinks I need to register but when I try it says I already have an account but when I request the info they deny I have an account at all:damn::down:
Anyone have a suggestion to get this resolved?
I am trully pissed off right now.
FYI the website would come up during the install process so who knows what is going on.....
Ya know I usually expect some hang ups esp with new titles but have generally had good luck getting stuff to run but I have to agree with folks here ...this company really seems to have its headgear misplaced....

Did you see new "read me" file ?
It should be played Mon-Fri 8.00-16.00.
Disturbing DRM for weekend at your own risk...
No, the DDOS pirates don't work during the week, only on the weekend! They only work during the peak gaming hours, of course! And they are so extremely good that their attack just looks like regular customers login in! Aren't they really smart? ;-)
Heh, Ubi's customer base doing its thing is the equivalent of a Distributed Denial of Service (DDOS) attack.
KiwiVenge
03-14-10, 01:24 AM
Has there been official response that this was another DDOS attack?
My gut feeling is it is just UBI servers not being able to handle weekend traffic, but can't say for sure.

Actually, mookiemookie speculated this back in February.
Ah, I must have missed that in the 'torrent' ( :DL ) of DRM posts.
Sorry Nisgeis, but I agree wholeheartedly with Fincuan, John W. Hamm, and the others on this one...
It was UbiSoft and UbiSoft alone who decided that an always-on internet connection was needed to play this game.
That's true, but there's two sides to the story. I think people are going off all half cocked on this one. Some are convinced it was user numbers due to the timing of the outage, some are convinced it's a DDOS again due to the timing (why disrupt a quiet time, when you can make a bigger impact during a busy time). Some cite the previous announcement of a DDOS by Ubiriptoft and others to counter that say that Ubiriptoft are lying. If people won't believe what Ubi say is the cause, then they'll never accept anything that is said and will just stick to their assumptions. It may as well be claims of aliens tampering with the DRM servers, because we'll never know if everyone lies... cue spooky music and don tin foil hat.
Have Ubi announced anything yet? No updates on Twitter at all yesterday.
We expected occasional downtime from the Ubi servers, but NO ONE ( I REPEAT NO ONE) predicted a pirate group would launch a DDOS attack on the servers. I mean the pirates are meant to be on our side right? But they're the ones stopping us playing!
Actually I said it numerous times before release, as did many others, on many sites.
Honestly I expected it to be on the launch days of SH5 and Assassins Creed 2 though.
The most surprising thing is it took two weeks to do it.
As for the pirates being to blame not ubi, while I don't defend piracy, what you are saying is like blaming the villagers for not turning the resistance fighters over to the nazis, and it is there fault when the nazi's stage a 'collective punnishment' on the village.

Again... just so I understand the logic of your analogy.
- The Ubisoft servers work fine.
- Because the Ubisoft servers are working fine you can play SH 5
- The hackers run a DOS attack on the servers
- Because the hackers run a DOS attack on the Ubisoft servers you cannot play SH 5
- It's Ubisoft's fault

Been playing this morning without any problems - was kicked off the computer by my "other DRM" - my girlfriend wanted to play Wow lol
John - this is how I see it, maybe its the way some of the others do too. Gonna use your post to illustrate only , this is in no-way an attack on you
-Ubisoft include a DRM in the game that means that you have to stay online to play your single player game
- The Ubisoft servers work fine.
- Because the Ubisoft servers are working fine you can play SH 5
- The hackers run a DOS attack on the servers
- Because the hackers run a DOS attack on the Ubisoft servers you cannot play SH 5
- It's Ubisoft's fault for making me have to be online when there is a dos attack going on, its also the pirates fault for carrying out a dos attack
- I'm angry at both
The Enigma
03-14-10, 08:26 AM
- The Ubisoft servers work fine as long as there is not much traffic to handle.
- Because there is much traffic Ubisoft servers aren't working fine and you can't play SH 5
- The hackers are getting the blame (running a DOS attack on the servers)
- Because the hackers run a DOS attack on the Ubisoft servers you cannot sue UBI
- It's that simple
The more threads I see like this the bigger my smile gets.
All of you who are in the least bit angry at all at anyone regardless if its the "pirates" or the pirates(UBI). The only person you should be angry at is yourself for agreeing to spend 50$ on a game that you do not own.
Remember no one held a gun to your head and told you to buy the "rent" to play the game. The only people you should blame for this is yourselves.

There is no smug superiority, it is my opinion. But you still only have yourselves to blame for the fact that you have a game that you can't play. You knew the risk of it when you bought it, yet you still bought it.
I don't particularly care for any of your opinions yet do I attack you? No, have I attacked you? No. Will I attack you? No.
I simply stated that people are blaming UBI and the pirates, yet UBI nor the pirates held a gun to your head and demanded that you buy the game or die.
Just because my opinion differs from yours, whether great or small doesn't mean that I have a holier than though opinion. Its is just my opinion. But seeing as you were to busy posting back to back to back with your buddy attacking my opinion means that you must be one of the ones who are not able to play the game. If it's not, I will not play it.
But I don't smile because other can't play it. Because I saw
Ubi destroy the Ravenshield series. The Ghost Recon series.
Just another fine game series they turned into.. [censored]
Because I know how to feels to have friends playing online.
You buy the game. Wait for a few days until it comes,
and you install it and start it and... It says you need to
insert the original disk which is already in the drive.
And you ask yourself : ok. So the pirates are playing

Strange to think that those with cracked versions get to play it, while those who paid must put up with this crap periodically. And you're right about Ubisoft - they do seem to be developing a tendancy to balls nice games up rather badly.

- The Ubisoft servers work fine, but they are not DDOS-hardened.
- Because the Ubisoft servers are working fine you can play SH 5
- The hackers run a DOS attack on the servers, as expected part of being online
- Because the hackers run a DOS attack on the Ubisoft servers you cannot play SH 5
- It's Ubisoft's fault because they didn't harden against expected and typical attacks

I can imagine every hacker on the planet trying to DDOS the servers on release day too...
As someone who was willingly thrown under the bus by Ubisoft, (Since my money clearly isn't worth as much as yours) I'm now off to the pub, to see if I can play a little 'sink the sub', have fun!
- Ubi produces game many people have no option to play in single player.
- Ubi is denying me and thousands like me, the ability to play SH5, and unlike people with slow computers, no amount of money I can throw at the problem will fix it to enable me to play the game.
- Everyone who buys a copy of SH5 or any other OSP, whether they agree with it or not, whether they have pretty little 'protest signatures' or not, are directly supporting Ubi's policy, and thus by endorsing Ubi's policy, you are denying me the ability to play a single player game.
- I generally don't support hackers, crackers, pirates or other online fiends, but in this case, they're the only one sticking up for me while you all who bought the game effectively stabbing me and everyone else in my position in the back and say 'well sorry mate, but thanks for all the laughs but ummm...Bye'
- Ubi needs to be taught a lesson and brought back down to Earth.
I have no sympathy for anyone who can't log onto this system.

Well I must admit that I don't frequent 'Tank Net' to read about submarine simulations. You only had about 30 posts that were in a relevant date range and there is a preview on them, so it only took about two minutes. I can see how for some that spending two minutes to find out if something is true or not would be considered 'sad', but I am happy to spend such a vast amount of time to research things. Mookie on the other hand is a prolific poster of prose and I wasn't going to look through his posts, because that would have taken more than two minutes and like who's got that kind of time OMG LOL!

All I asked for was a link to the post, as I was interested to read it. I don't know where all your anger is coming from. You said you had posted it and I had not seen it, so I asked where it was. I did ask politely too. I assumed it was posted on subsim, as that's the forum we are on and it's not a prerequisite to read 'Tank Net' as a companion site to subsim.
I don't think you really mean that you were willingly thrown under the bus do you? That would mean that you wanted it to happen.
I don't think in any case that 'every hacker on the planet' did take part in a DDOS attack, as that would be rather a lot of attacks, by rather a lot of people. Also, the groundswell of opinion is currently turning to their never having been a DDOS attack and it being a ruse by Ubisoft to hide their servers lack of capacity to cope with normal demand at peak times. Which is the turth, I don't know.

I can see the point of anger coming from many folks who have resisted the temptation to buy SH5, feeling they have been let down by those of us who have bought the game and struggle on with the DRM issues and to a lesser degree bugs.
I can also accept that we who bought SH5 are sort of feeding the beast because if Ubi can turn around and say the whole DRM meltdown hardly effected sales, then we all lose as they will continue to ignore the customer base over DRM.
What does not help though, is unofficial spokesmen for Ubsioft (will resist the temptation to call them fanbois) trying to insist their servers are fine and the game is fine in general. I'm getting really sick of the over the top defence of Ubisoft, just as sick as i am getting of the over the top ranting.
