I have a little question, I was docked in port and I saw an option to add Camouflage (of course, being in a VIIA I didn't have any options open) to your boat. I am curious what this is all about, can somebody throw a teaser in ole' SH427's direction about the camouflage options? I might just go back to skinning (:D) and not major modding (maybe after we get this Goblin Editor sorted out and we start seeing some signs of what I'm good at coming about, Then I will bring my modding skills to bear,) but I need to know how this camouflage system works. What kinda designs are available etc.

Based on my experience with SH5 thus far this is referring to the overall skin of the boat.

it would appear that some historically accurate skins have made it into the game, such as U-404's conning tower skin.

which was a large red viking boat prow like this one

other skins are more similar to this...

you also have the option of adding a personal emblem just like in SH3.

so far the options seem limited as far as default goes

Being a simulator and all, I think a camoflagued uboat should benefit from that in certain situations. Like when seen from long range (20km right?), and maybe in shorter range when weather and visibility is limited.

i agree and i dont know if this is simulated in SH5. Im betting it is NOT simulated.

however, i think just like sonar coating should reduce sonar return by x%

certain paint schemes should increase or decrease VISUAL detection by x%

for example... a solid black paint scheme would make the visual detection at night decrease by 40%

but at day... it would increase by 25%

or something similar.

GR and Decoman, thanks for the responses.

It could be possible that the visual detection bit has been added, why create such a fuss over camouflage if it didn't serve an in-game purpose? after all, compressed air usage and hydrodynamics has been implemented, what else could have made the game that we don't know about?

what else could have made the game that we don't know about?

given the state of the incredibly bad manual... we may never know.

an individual (or team of them) wrote the GWX manual for free...

the quality of that product is immeasurable... it is the most thorough and complete technical publication i have ever laid eyes on.

whoever they are (im too lazy to look) they are surely shiny golden Gods! They cared about the material and the subject matter... and they cared about the end user.

the manual for SH5 was written for hire, for a commercial venture... its failure as a manual is without rival.

the writer(s) of the SH5 manual just didnt have anything to do on a tuesday morning before lunch break.:shifty:

they wrote the manual with the same level of passion most of us put into the act of defecation.

Ship/sub camouflage doesn't make a boat any harder to spot, unlike DPM on soldiers uniforms. It is intended to make visual range estimations and aob harder to calculate when viewed in combination with natural shadows and water reflections. It was done to throw off gunnery and buy time, in much the same way aircraft tried different camo schemes during the first and second world wars.

In sh5 it's there for the purists and to offer greater variety amongst players in multiplayer.
