View Full Version : Again (and sorry for this!): Crew doesn't report contacts
Dear all,
this is a well-known bug, and it's been reported many times now, but how can you play any mission in SH5 when your crew doesn't report all contacts?
I play with full realism (so, no map updates) and the moral mod, but I constantly find my ship sunk as no ship has been reported in sight (even with low time compression).
Is there any workaround but to lower realism such that the contacts are being shown on the map?
Cheers and thanks!
p. s.: Didn't find any solution via forum search, sorry if I've missed it ...

Simple. Play with Map Contacts ON. And try not to upgrade your Hydrophone. The initial one can let you hear on the surface. I thought it to be a bug, but if you actually listen through it, you can clearly make out ships (faint, but you can). ATM the game is almost unplayable without Map Contacts. The sonar guy does a decent job, but the Deck Crew are morons. They're better at telling me they've spotted an aircraft while I'm raising my obs scope out of the water than spot a ship 2 km away at which I've already been shooting my gun for 20 minutes.

Do you remember to disable travel mode when entering hostile waters?

Sorry, forgot to mention that: of course!

What I've found is that if I travel at relatively high time compression (at least 64x, usually I'm travelling at at least 512x) then if the ship drops out of TC with no announcement of why - I just press ctrl+v (using Church's keyboard mod) to ask for visual sighting and then the crew report that there's a ship nearby.

This is kind of what I've been doing too. If you don't go any higher than 512x, the crew does a better job of spotting ships. Of course they won't tell you they've spotted anything - that part is still broken - but you'll drop out of TC and see the contact on your map at least.
This is a bug that should be priority 1 on a patch.

Agreed, there are a few other crucial bugs (save/load game bugs), but this is the top of the list.

Isn't travel mode only supposed to NOT call out for FRIENDLY targets?
Yes, travel mode only stops TC from dropping when friendly ships come into the vicinity (plus shallow water & land proximity). TC will still drop out when enemy ships come nearby.
However, usually the watch crew don't report them, and without a mod you can't see the smoke on the horizon even if you look around for a ship, so typically you would re-enable the TC and end up meeting that DD you couldn't see in the distance. By the time you realise it you've been blown up. :yeah:
As mookie says above, the TC drop-out does still work correctly - you just have to know to proceed with caution if it happens, as it's a sign of an enemy nearby. Visiting the hydrophone station is probably the best thing to do if it happens, and find out which direction they're in.

I think priority one should be either linking the speed of the torpedo man's upgrade to the TDC in Manual/Auto or correctly applying it to range/damage as opposed to speed/damage.

Work around :-
1. = play at 1x accelerated time. Every contact will be reported.
2. = play with map contacts on.... they still dont report the contacts but you will be able to see the contact in time to switch to 1x accelerated time. At which point your watch crew will say "Smoke on the horizon". but due to TC the smoke will be a ship at approx 6 meters away.
I been playing SH5 for 2 days now. And have noticed that contact reports work if you play at 1x accelerated time. Not much use unless you want to sit at your PC for 2 weeks to sink a ship. but it works.:haha:

OMG what a disaster
Ive noticed now that they do somewhat report contacts. Generally it will be a smoke on the horizon message.
However if you drop out of TC and have the update commands then select the shift+V command and they will tell you a general direction and general range to a contact they have spotted.
I noticed that when I get hit by something they didnt report it is because I dropped out of TC and immediatly went back in to TC.
TC is dropping at any speed it is just the actual words that are missing. At least this is what I have seen.
Before using the shift+v command I would always just jump right back into TC since I didnt see an actual message from my WO. Now I use that and havent been suprised again,

You may also want to alter your Main.cfg file to make TC drop to x1 instead of x8 (Default) when spotting an Enemy contact.
There is a thread here about it somewhere.

I've run into this too, but another side effect is that now both my sonar guy and my XO are shouting out contacts when they do call them out.
It's funny to be at 180 meters, rigged for silent running and everyone's speaking in hushes voiced while the sonarman and XO are shouting.
I'm guessing it's a side effect of the Morale Mod since their morale decayed down to nothing.
