So I happen upon a 4 ship convoy, no guns, no escorts. Happy Times indeed! I sink them pretty quickly, then head off north towards Scapa Flow.
After a few hours I notice a warship, closing FAST! 30kts and heading right at me. I'm all pumped up from my convoy feast and decide to sink this poor soul. So I line up the perfect throat shot. Everything is perfect, just enough scope to keep track of him but not enough to be seen before I fire. I wait and wait.
200m before I was to fire, he slows down and turns away!
I watch him a bit and he's taking this real slow turn back towards the coast. I wait and pull up behind him. I'm not letting this guy get away! He turns back and settles on a course to home and I follow, lined up perfectly. I finally let my fish go. She's running hot and perfect, right down the line at this destroyer. Closer.. closer... closer..
I cheat a bit and switch to external camera. Now you can just barely see the torpedo's wake past the ship's own wake! They can't see it, can they? It inches closer still. Alarms! Engine revs up! But it's too late, even if they turn the torpedo is so close it'll hit something. Then I hear the "torpedo failed" message. What??
There's no more torpedo wake, I whoosh under the water and there is my brave little torpedo.. exhausted and out of running room... 50m from the stern of this destroyer! Slowly it sinks till it finally blows up on a rock on the sea bed. I measured the distance of the shot and it was almost exactly the torpedo's running distance on fast speed. :( I was soo close to that kill, TWICE! Stupid lucky destroyer! heh
