Hi all ok tried SHV and sorry couldn't get on with it too many bugs and little annoying things so decided i would install SHIII back on and have a go at that. I put the dvd in the drive run autorun little menu comes up with the options i click to install get the windows installer screens and then nothing. Game gets installed but i cannot modify any of the .cfg files as it throws up errors. Game is not seen by gameshadow to update although i have all the patches to take it to 1.3. Install those get the protection error so downloaded the no dvd files and still get the protection error.

Am getting near to giving up i am not new to gaming and am used to using cracks for my games and tweaking my system to get them to run but on this i havn't got a clue why it will not work and why i get no installation menus beyond the initial one's. System is q9450 @ 3.4, 8 gig ddr2 ram, 5870. I run vista 64 ultimate and i know a lot of people have got problems on this and i have read through pages and pages but they all talk about problems after the game is installed or not being able to get the game installed whilst i can get the game on the pc but cannot seem to use it at all. Any help from you fine folk would be greatly appreciated.

First, if you are using Vista, install the game to C:\SilentHunterIII
Then, do not install GameShadow. Forget it.
You need to install patch 1.4b for SH3

The second question is : where did you buy it and when ?
Because recent versions are already patched to 1.4b and have
no Starforce protection, while olders have.

Mm You are using Vista 64-bit. Problem is the StarForce has no
64-bit driver, only 32-bit. It will not work on 64-bit Vista as
far as I known.

You need a non-protected version of the game.

I bought mine for less than 10 euro, came patched to 1.4b
and free of copy protection. Message me for details of where
to find it.

You can find it in here (http://www.subsim.com/store.html), it comes with SH2....

Do not install it into C:\Program Files. Install it outside the program files folder. I made a folder called Ubisoft and installed it into C:\Ubisoft thus avoiding the Vista file protection program which screws up patching and modding of SHIII. Use the noCD patch also.

delete every instance of SH3 found during this search. If you had it installed on your system before, the remanents of your prior installation can play havoc with your installation attempts.

Thanks for the replies guys problem is i cannot set where it installs i never get any menu allowing me to do that same with the directx menu or gameshadow. I run the autorun off the dvd get the menu with the options to play, install game, install directx, manual, uninstall i click install and the windows installer screens come up but once they go i have nothing till the game is on my drive.

Normally i install all my games to a drive seperate from the os drive but i cannot do this with SH3 because i never get the chance. I bought the game about two years ago and it is a legit copy but i don't think it is one of the later versions that doesn't have the starforce on it and getting protection errors would seem to back that up. I downloaded the no dvd fix that is mentioned on these forums but it doesn't work and i am assuming thats because although the game is put on the drive it is not properly installed hence why i also cannot edit any .cfg files i can change them but it will not allow me to save them.

It is a weird problem that i have never come across before and thats why it is doing my head in so much. I have wiped all reference to SH3, ubisoft and gameshadow off my pc and will try another install but i don't think that will sort it but will post back if it does. Hope you guys have some other ideas as i really want to have a go at the game.

Ok finally managed to sort it a friend of mine who had similar problems downloaded an image of a more recent disc and installed from that he gave me the image and it worked for me too. I do have a question though i am doubtful he obtained the image by legal means is it ok to use any image as long as i have my original serial number from my legit purchase as i don't want to risk getting into trouble by using illegal images. Sorry if it's a noob question but i have never used images before always buy the games i like so not sure how it all works.

You bought the game.
You own an original copy and a license to legally install it, use it.
I see no problem in downloading a copy in your case.

Downloading a copy is not illegal.
Using it without a valid license is...

So you did nothing wrong by downloading it.
You did nothing wrong by installing it since you own an original and a license to install and use the game.

Play the game, have fun :ping:

I agree with this. After all, when you buy software, you are not actually buying the software, but a license to use the software. The installation media is immaterial, as long as you own a legitimate license to the software.

The important thing is to buy the license, so that you support the making of software that you like.
