Check Six

I have started a new campaign as I failed to click on the crosses to enter the first mission. So this time around, I did that, and headed to the East coast of the British Isles. Adjacent to the cross that you click to select that mission is an icon that looks like a sinking ship and it suggests I patrol the indicated area.
What exactly IS the indicated area? Is it in between the thick red line that outlines British waters running between Edinburgh and just North of London that appears when you check out the mission briefing? Is it next to the sinking ship icon?
I only ask because I patrolled up and down the coast between England and the red line, but all I haver seen are patrolling destroyers, no merchants whatsoever.
Do I have to wait a few days? Do I need to evade the destroyers and wait for a convoy? Can I go to the English Channel and attack in there? Does that count as a kill for the mission objectives? Is that in the "indicated area"?
Any tips? Anyone know of any happy hunting grounds?
Also, the anchor icons next to inlets and bays...are they solely a Naval Base, and a source of Warships to harrass you, or do merchants enter/leave from these ports as well?
