View Full Version : External cam fixed on own U-Boot?

Does anyone now how to fix the external camera on the own U-Boot? I'm following my boat with the asdw-key like nuts.

But what I'd like to do, is sit back and enjoy the riding through the waves for a while. Was possible in SH3 and SHIV, so what about V?

It's been tried using the methods from earlier games but ended up breaking things.

Yep. One could argue that it isn't a huge thing. But for a player like me, who just loves to adore his boat and kick in some good vibes from the gramaphone, it makes quite a difference. :yep:

Grammaphone at sunset see the bow plowing through the waves, it gets me in a mood I can´t explain :yeah:

So, to sum in up...
In SH3, external camera worked for ships and planes, but crashed on land units.
In SH4, it lost ability to track planes and worked only for ships.
In SH5, it's messed even for ships.

I just bought this today and you have got to be kidding me?!! For me this is just basic to any game to be able to view the person or object you are simulating!! This is a joke right? I find it impossible to believe that in a 3D game in 2010, you cannot look at the object you are in.

Jokes aside, please, what is the key to view my sub? Or just any other object?

Just click the circle in the upper left hand corner it clicks to an outside camera. Hope that helps.

The game is pretty nice once you add some of the old mods that made SH3 and SH4 the great games they were.

I don't remember how SH3 was, but I imagine that it would be nice to be able to goto external camera, and then press a hotkey for simply parenting the camera to the uboat's horisontal movement. Like a toggle, on and off.

Then I imagine that one would be free to move the now parented camera around, allowing to change its position yet still following the movement of the uboat.

in the commands.cfg file i assigned the > < keys to next and previous unit. it did just like it did for SH4. it followed the uboat and would cycle to nearby units.

i did however read that it was buggy, although i didnt experience any problems myself. I did put the command lines back the way they were as to not have any future issues. i might revisit it.

Me already had a look in the command config and the keys are assigned but not working.

i just tried it. it does act strangely. when you enable this, you cant 'cycle' back to your sub, say if you were on the bridge or periscope station, it will just cycle you to an exterior view. Also i have a tweaked camera file that allows free movement within the proximity bubble of the units that normally keeps you at a distance, when using this command it keeps you outside that bubble. it must be looking at another file? its just odd.:hmmm:

The code there has a "context" parameter. From what I understood (guessing), this parameter allow the code to execute, when the camera is in one context or the other. So the two commands listed are probably only available for use in context 1 and 15 (whatever that is).

Being inside the sub is probably one context, using the external camera is probably another context. The context parameters are listed there somewhere, maybe at the top of the file.

I have never modded for this game so please bear with me if I am in error.

This has been bugging the hell out of me for a week now.
When I first got the game I re-enabled the prev/next cam buttons.
I'm sure I got it to work, but only sometimes. Some others have reported it working intermittently too.

Finally just figured it out.
It depends on where the camera is when you first hit the > key.

Try this.
Re-enable the keys. Stand on the bridge.
Hit F2 FIRST, to go to external cam. Hit the prev/next unit buttons. Camera cycles properly. F2 then brings you back onto the bridge.

HOWEVER
If you are standing on the bridge and just hit the next unit button from there, F2 will not bring you back onto the bridge.

Seems the key is to always cycle to external cam first.

I concur, nice find. i couldnt nail down any rhyme or reason but what you said is how mine behaves too. i have not tried different "context" modifications... :hmmm:

I think a lot of us are hoping a modder will help us. In one mod I've seen the external camera was fixed outside but fixed literally on the boat. So even while zooming out the camera was slaves to the sub. As the sub would rock side to side the camera would elevate up and down accordingly. It wasn't quite what was in sh3@4 but close. It resulted in horrible framerates compared to sh3@4 as well. But I know. Just a simple mod like this would mean a lot to ....well.... A lot of us. I personally miss being on the surface, ordering a dive to periscope depth and watching the boat silently slip under the water. I do love the graphics but like the earlier post I running around the sub likr crazy with the wasd keys now just to get my external camera fix until someone can mod it for us.

Sorry for such a rant there's just a bunch of us that would love this mod. It's the small things that make a game great and this is one of those things for a few of us.

I can´t get to work with this, it simply does nothing :hmmm:
Me use Church´s keyboard map and copied that in the command file.
Got no idea why it won´t work.

mud the changes are to the commands.cfg file, you have to disable the mod, make the changes to the mod then re-enable the mod.

but doing so will only cause bugs i wouldnt even bother. It breaks cycling back 'into' the sub

I´m running stock SH5 atm and it still doesn´t work, I enabled the > < commands but no joy.

I´ll leave it for now,thanks ATR :salute:

edit: At the moment to give up I got it to work

See post 12, I've quoted it underneath. You have to edit Data/Cfg/Commands.cfg with a text editor. But it's a little buggy at the moment. Be aware you may not be able to get back in your sub after switching cameras.

If I hit F2 again after a cycle and then use mousewheel to zoom in / zoom out I´m able to get back on the boat.
It seems that the camera switches over to binocular view.

Ok so im trying to see how this is done, but im confused a bit. In my unmodded, unedited cfg for these two commands they appear just as they do in ATR-42's post.
So just what are you fellers changing on these?

Also as to a command to lock the view to your boat, it appears that is command# 49 just above these two for next and previous unit.
But there is no key assigned, and no page line as in 50 & 51.
Now im not knowlegeable about this sort of thing, but I was able to get the "depth under keel" command to work as per someone's other post here, by adding the line they posted in red. Which I assume is defining the keystroke's ASCII code hex figures. And it worked.

So as per that posters advice, I looked up an ASCII code table so I could perhaps dabble in this stuff a little and learn to do this stuff with these cfg files. I have done a tad with this in FSX with help.
But anyway, in the ASCII code table the hex figures for the < > keys dont match what I see in both my own cfg file, and whats posted here.
In that table they are 0x3c and 0x3e respectively, so from what my logic tells me what apprears in the stock cfg file needs to be changed to these.

Am I on the right track?
And then there is that #49 command, thats named "camera on unit" which seems to me to be the one that would give the external cam locked to the sub the OP asked about. But it doesnt have the info the other two disscused here do. No key line, no page line. Now again, im trying to learn here, and my logic is that the page line would be the same as it is on #50 & 51, and then the ASCII code hex figures done for the key line. Which in this case I'd go for what it was in SH3, that being "." so using the ASCII code for that key to do the line defining that would get that command working I assume.
Again, am I on the right track?
