View Full Version : Silly Escort, go home!

So I tried to sneak into a harbor again. There were 4 escorts roaming around and I missed twice trying to hit one (thankfully fog covered up my follies). I finally decided to head out to sea.

How, somehow the one I'd shot at had become my friend. He followed me at 7500m off my left shoulder FOREVER! Run along with me, circle, then catch back up. The problem was it was a beautiful day! So I couldn't surface or I'd get attacked. Second problem was, I was running out of batteries. 25% left!

Then I got a bright idea! I consulted the maps and saw there was a little 8km long "tongue" of a peninsula just ahead of me! Kinda T shaped, where I'd be just above the top of the T and said by and he'd be just under the top of the T. :) So I plotted a course as close to the right of it as I could. Thankfully night had fallen and I could surface by now without being seen.

So I steamed ahead right along the coast. And sure enough, my little escort friend did the same.. on the OTHER side of the penisula! Sadly for him the shoreline was MUCH closer on that side...

BAM! He smacked right into beach at full steam! Muhahaha! Apparently he didn't take too much damage, though half of him was on fire. He turned around and headed out to sea, literally sailing off into the sunset. (well, sunrise by this time, but same effect!)

I encountered the same problem yesterday. A destroyer followed me just outside visual range from Scapa Flow all the way to Wilhemshaven.... Each time I submerged to attack him, it was like he knew my position and kept the same distance between us.

Strange indeed....but he fled at the entrance of Wilhemshaven...

I think for now the escort system is quite weak. Maybe it gets tougher in the next missions but for now they are not actively seeking to destroy you.

Same reports in other threads, for example:

I've probably had the same things because a couple of DDs have been around on the limit of my visual range for some hours now, and always in roughly the same directions.

I'm pretty close to land near an estuary, so might have to test out the 'fix' ;)

Happened to me last night, right after my very first enemy contact in campaign mode. I'd just sunk a tanker (Cimarron class, British-flagged and in 1939 - WTF?) and about 20 miles later, two DDs appeared and followed ma for a while. Never in a straight line, always buzzing around at 35 knots, but although I was out of their detection radius, they always seemed to know where I was. When I changed course, they did as well, but never charged in for the kill.

Eventually of course, their greater speed pushed me into their LOS and they pounced.

The overall behavior leads me to suspect that for whatever reason, they were treating me as a convoy, which is why they always seemed to know where I was, yet never attacked until I eventually wound up in the detection radius.

My question, is this happening in 100% of cases? If so, it's the final game-breaker for me until patched.

I was chased by sub. Tried to do the same coast maneuver but because of not precise navmap I've crashed my sub. But I don't know is it a bug.. maybe just sneaky, persistent Brits?

I kind of did the opposite. I was chasing one to see if I could sink it, but it kept moving away from me. It kept doing so until it ran right into the shore and exploded. Funny, but annoying as well, as I wanted to kill it...
