View Full Version : Best value sub?

Which sub variant gives the best value in SH3? Considering cost and performance, potential upgrades.

Of course the XXI is the highest performer, but it comes in late and costs a lot of points. Right now the VIIB looks like the most convenient to me (still haven't passed 1943).

Which sub is your workhorse?

I have started with the first flotilla and I have a type IIA.
Ship is small so it's easy to avoid destroyers and escorts.
I am slowly reaching 1000 of renown and I have to reach 2500
to get a VIIB. The VIIC dives a few seconds faster but I prefer
the VIIB because it has better speed on surface and submerged
(the VIIC has a bigger tower with more AA guns but I don't take
the risk of fighting them and I dive).

I will probably take the VIIB as workhorse and will only move to
a type IX if needed (for that, I'll probably start a new carreer with
a type VII first then type IX).

I would say the type VII is my favorite. The B version.

Although I'm in love with the IXB, economicly your best bet would be the VIIB.

If nothing is altered, the VIIB or the IIA are free at the start of things.
Most, if not all, would agree that the VIIB delivers more bang than the IIA.

Also, in GWX3.0 at any rate, the VIIB has a range of 34K....

I've had good success with the VIIB so far. I don't really like anything that can't mount a deck gun.

I always start with a VII B, the Type II's are way to undermanned.
As quick as it is possible I trade up to a VII C.

I want whatever carries the most torpedoes.

I'm saving my renown for a type IX.

The Type II is too little fun for the trip out.

Me too.
But, unluck us, he's worried about cost.

IXB - any time......mainly for its larger weapons load. I particularly like its double aft tubes - for self-protection.

I run three separate careers at the same time - one in each. I don't use renown to change boats, as that was rare. Besides, with SH3 Commander's 'Realistic Career Length' turned on, I'm not likely to ever get that much renown.

You can always tweak the renown and purchase it as soon as it becomes available.

Same as Sailor Steve... Running multiple careers: a VIIc and a IXc. Love 'em both but the advantage goes to the IX cause she's got the better load-out, longer range and dual stern tubes ;)

Now isn't that what got those fellows over at ENRON in trouble? :D

I just change the type and boat number.

Hmmm.
If our systems count as being "economical", then, as usual, you are 100% right, and he ought to go right for the best. IXB!

(Didn't I see you driving a XXIII off England's east coast lately?)

Both the VIIB and IXB... definitively my favorites... at the start, I mostly use the VIIB for coastal attacks of the british isles... due to the numbers of eels... When I get a IXB, that's when i really got out on the Atlantic... mostly around Halifax... pre-1943... than a bit further south... to avoid those pesky allied aircrafts.

Definitely a IX, cause I can go to warm waters and get the chill out of my bones.

I'm a big fan of the Type II. It has few torpedoes, but that means you get to go back to base a lot sooner! That's where the chicks are anyway. :O:

Seriously, in this game, not getting killed is what keeps you going. And for not getting killed, nothing is better than the smallest pressure hull available. The smaller the pressure hull, the more resistant to depth charge attack.

You won't sink much tonnage in a Type II, but you will stick around when other subs would have been goners. And when you have so few torpedoes in the first place, each one becomes that much more precious, and thus, more exciting to fire.

You certainly did...I was testing the feasibility of it carrying an unhistoric payload of 4 eels.

It didn't feel right....resorted back to the more historical payload of 2 eels.

Sounds like my experience with carrying external reloads. I gave up on them as the tonnage results per boat were just too high, and very unhistorical.
I'm forever looking for ways to bring the numbers in line with reality. Not an easy task by any means.
