View Full Version : SUBSIM is dying

Neal you should replace some of your immature forum admins for the greater good of this community. Seriously. I just had my third account deleted without legit reason. I did not encourage piracy nor did I post anything illegal or against forum rules. Free speech however seems to be an endangered species these days. I registered this last time only to say goodbye. I have been a supported for over 15 years. It's been fun participating, and especially when we contributed with feedback to East and his team during the development of Enigma. I was even quoted on the cover.

Subsim is a rather small and fragile community. The mess UBI caused is already demoralizing most if not all member, and the inappropriate behavior by some forum admins do not make things better. Because of this behavior (deleting accounts with no warning or explanation to why) I choose not to participate at all.

Good luck with everything. I hope to see subsim.com still active in a couple of years.

Well, I find it hard to believe such dramatic announcements. Subsim is not dying, it's been going strong for ten years and bar server fires I should imagine that it will be still going strong in another ten years.
People are getting rather emotional over Silent Hunter V, I rarely look in the SHV forum but when I do it seems to be a divide of good and bad opinions and many threads on a similar subject, in other words, pretty much the same thing that happened when SHIII came out just a bit more in volume because there's more people on this forum now than when SHIII came out.
So, while Accer may have a genuine grievance with moderators in the SHV forum, that's surely something between him and the moderators to resolve by PM as opposed to making a fantastic claim that Subsim is dying. Aside from server overload caused by the sheer size of Subsim at the moment (which is growing because of new members joining over SHV) the rest of Subsim is doing just fine, only in the SHV forum is there something akin to a bush fire, and that's business as usual for a new release.

Seriously, I have nothing against Accer, and, like I said, if there is a problem with the moderators surely this is something to be sent in an email or PM to Neal rather than hanging it up in public where people can hurl dung at moderators with gay abandon. This is not a public pillory.
Issues like this are best resolved with emails or PMs, nothing good ever comes out of airing ones dirty laundry in public.

If you expected better from me, well then I'm sorry to disappoint you, but that's how I feel and as much as I respect how you and Accer feel, I ask that you also respect how I feel.

You encouraged using cracks, and talked about cracking SH5 which is very much against the rules here.

What is Subsim.com's stance in relation to warez and piracy? SUBSIM Review has a longstanding policy against software piracy. We do NOT allow discussion or even mention of warez, abandonware, peer-to-peer game swapping, illegal download sites, or rip-off websites. Nothing will get you banned faster than pointing people to illegal software distribution sites. Don't ask for serial numbers, manuals, or cracks. Any admission that you have in your possession illegal software can and usually will result in revocation of your Radio Room forum account. Support computer game programmers buy legally purchasing their work. They have to eat too, you know.

Hacked exe's are considered illegal in several countries, and are not permitted to be discussed here.

Plain and simple the rule is don't ask don't tell. We don't care what you do on your own system, just don't tell us about it if it is potentially illegal (particularly if it is illegal in the US where this site is hosted). If you tell us you are using cracks or pirated material we will be forced to act.

What exactly leads you to believe that subsim.com is a democracy with constitutional rights?

Man, this is a private forum, Neal's house, and we follow Neal's rules. Would you enter Neal's house without his permission, walk in front of him and take a beer from the refrigerator while invoking your fundamental, constitutional rights? You want to be here? Fine, you are invited. But follow the rules. Else, you are also kindly invited to go and open your own forum, where you can enforce as many rights as you please.

Seriously, you seem to have a problem understanding the nature of things :hmmm:

actually I must agree with Hitman.(I was in the brig twice). Neal's forum=Neal's rules. BUT-sometimes it happens that you write sth and you go to the brig or you end up banned without a chance to explain what you meant.(my second case). But most of times you get several warnings etc so it's not like getting a punishment for nothing. In fact you have already made 4 accounts to carry on with your story...You are a trouble maker so don't blame the staff.

@OP Freedom of speech is one thing, acting a fool is quite another. If anything Neal and the mods here are more lenient than you'll find anywhere else. Seriously, if you can't last in this forum, you need to just log off the Internet and take a good hard look at yourself.

How many times have we asked people not to post "I pirated SH5 to see if it would run on my computer, but if I like it I was going to buy it" ??

Too many. The rules are very clear, we don't want people posting casual remarks about how they are are pirating games. We don't want people informing the forum that they use cracks on their LEGAL games because there is no way to know if they are honest people trying to work around a PITA DRM, or they are lying and running a bootleg version of the game. To be fair, no one cares what you do on your PC in your parent's garage, but....

You cannot discuss it here.

It's on the signup agreement, it's on the new user welcome email, it's in the FAQ & Rules (http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/faq.php), and it's stickied in the Sticky: Note: Read before posting - you could be interested to know we have a few rules here (http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=155270) thread here.

And if you think I am going to hand-hold every WOW-refugee and exchange 10 PMs about it... think again. I do not have time for that. And I don't get paid to spend my evenings doing it. So, after many warnings, if you cannot manage to keep yourself inside the rules, you could get nuked from orbit--username deleted, posts deleted, banned for life, just like it says in the rules that have been in place since 1999.

Sorry. You can come back as a new alias, but the rules stay the same. I would rather have a small forum of intelligent, thoughtful people than a massive forum of nutballs and drama queens fizzing at the mouth any day.

And there you have it. Common sense should dictate right from the start that certain things just should not be discussed on these kinds of forums, otherwise face the music and be brave about it. Discuss cracks and piracy on the undergrounds, not the more respectable outfits like Subsim.

I'm kind of amused at how some things never change. Grumpy people - with a point perhaps - who just don't get it, that's certainly one of those things.

I've been involved with quite a number of websites and have participated in administering some. Subsim's administration, if you ask me, is one of the most effective I have seen, largely because it's the right mix of common sense and community values on the one hand, and Neal's active 'my clubhouse' attitude on the other. In the end it works. It's a clubhouse built on respect, not written-in-stone rules, and if you want to challenge norms you have to respect the established way of doing things here. In the end, it's a submarine sim community, not a platform to make statements on politics of software. Let's keep that in perspective.

Otherwise "dying" is a gross exaggaration for a site that has just experienced problems due to demand for its community services just going through the roof. Anything but, sir.

Dare I say anything, gee I walk that thin line too often, Neal has had to pull me up a few times with PM's, I have been in the Brig once before but yes I must control my frustrations better, I think Neal will agree with that,:yep: maybe you should come up with a new law Neal that if in the brig you can get out earlier by making a fair donation, maybe even keelhauled with a large donation, call them fines, then put them on probation, seems fair! the way things go here sometimes you could make a packet! :03:

What's with all these proposals to get Neal to accept "special features" for users lately? Geez, just play fair and donate regularly - I don't think Subsim is desperate for money as long as people do so, and I don't think Neal is out to make a buck off it, either. I don't think any special priviliges like that are fair - let's keep the playing field level and not treat some transgressions more leniently than others - and avoid the brig in the first place :O:

You are given second chances before you get keelhauled, by receiving warnings, PMs from moderators or Neal, being asked to play by the rules. Brigtime is such a second chance, a last warning, so to speak. Standards are not standards when they are open to unlimited debate, redefinition, ma favourite: endless relativising, and deal-making. At one point people need to reach that line in the sand that says: until here and not one step further. Offenders are not to negotiate the "law" and by that negotiating the conditions of their "penalty". They get submitted to the "law" and the sanctions in it like anyone else, full stop.

Regarding that pathetic statement that subsim is dying: considering the circumstances of the poster, I think that is not an observation, but qualifies more as wishful thinking.
