Early in the war is it a smart move to go with the mark 10 torpedo and not the mark 14 cause of all the malfunctions they suffer?

It was easy for me in my second career - I started in an S-boat. Now starting again in a porpoise, I figure I'll go with the 14's, and live with the duds. It's what really happened.
But others much more knowledgeable than I will soon chime in with better answers...

Well a few fleetboats in asiatic fleet went on patrol with Mark 10s Around August 1942, due to a shortage of Mark 14 torpedos.Mark 10's were more reliable but were outdated with a short range of 3000 yards, slower speed and smaller warhead, thus did less damage.
Personally I suffer through the Mark 14 problems because it's historically accurate.May do one patrol with Mark 10's since its in line with history.Up to you.Just remember they have shorter range and pack less of a punch.I have found that two Mark 14's will put a mid sized freighter down usually, may take 3-4 Mark 10's to bring down the same size ****.Of course this also depends on ships loadout.Ships have internal and external loads(which can be set in the ME) Internal loads are always fuel, ammo or freight.External loads can run be freight crates/containers, ammo crate/containers, trucks, tanks, oil, aircraft or trap container.Tankers have an internal load only which can be fuel, freight or ammo.If a ship is loaded with AMMO or fuel, pretty much any torpedo will sink it with ease because the blow up easy.Freight or a mix load of say internal freight and external ammo crates, depends on where the torpedo hits and how big of a hit.As in RL, its a gamble.
Just be ready to use more of the Mark 10's to bring down even mid sized ships that one or two Mark 14's could handle.Trade off of course is 10 is more reliable.Just have to make the call.
