View Full Version : Managed to get in; Fixed Sluggish Mouse and stuttering!
Well its 2336 GMT and I finally managed to get in... for 10 mins play as I have to go to bed now :(
On the good news, someone else on this forum mentioned reducing the number of cores that the game uses with Set Affinity to improve performance. I have to admit I was a bit sceptical - however...
I have 4 core I7 hyperthreaded to 8 cores. When all are running - the default - game performance varies considerably from mouse moves hardly registering to super quick sensitivity.
So I set affinity to only 1 core. Result: Immediate improvement - as in the difference between night and day. Only artifacts was that the bow and stern waves weren't as 'animated' as they usually are.
Next I enabled core 0 and 2 only. Again Super fluid smooth gameplay, but now the bow and stern waves animate correctly!!!!! :yep:
On my rig at least, the game performs as well as SHIII, which considering how it used to be is a massive improvement.
Don't remember who thought of this solution, but Thank You!!!! :salute:
I highly recomend that others with performance issues try this out.
Yes, can confirm the core thing. Silly I didn't think of this earlier, lots of new games have this issue with having better performance the fewer cores you have in use.
Changed from 2 to 1 core and no more stuttering, hell even can have shadows on fully with not much of a drop in FPS. :salute:

Maybe a stupid question but, how do you switch from 2 to 1 core?? From the game options?

CTRL+ALT+DEL right-click on SH5.exe -> set affinity
Tho, with one core the particles are all messed up. The bowspray for example goes all the way to around the bridge. Messed up game... :nope:

Thank you I'll give it a try, and might keep it if it does not mess things up, more than they are already!!

Very nice!
Can you phrase this as a tip, and I can add to the Tips section? Thanks :salute:

Wow this is totally counter intuitive.
I mean folks pay the big bucks for multicores for that 'uber' performance.
Here we are disabling that 'uberness'.
That being said I am off to test this as I had some of these issues.

just checking back.
I can confirm that setting affinity does indeed reduce stutters and mousey hitches... but at a cost of graphics eye candy.
In my game the prop wake was a static bitmap. Thats all I saw it was like a 5 minute test.

well I can confirm adjusting the affinity makes the graphics borked.
but however setting SH5 to use either Core 1 or Core 2 of my e8400 did NOT fix the mouse being normal then suddenly 2x the sensitivity.
nor did it improve performance with shadows enabled.
iCore7 920 here and I didn't notice any improvement by dropping down to 1 or 2 cores either. :(
I´ve tried it on a i5 core altho I have no issues with running 4 of them, the game gets slower if I run on 1 or 2 cores, specially if I walk towards the command room.
Mud
Your PC's just blow. :O:
Here's my results (taken with FRAPS)
Both cores in use, Inside the boat
No shadows = 20-40FPS constantly changing, mouse stuttering
Full shadows = ~16 FPS
Only one core in use, inside the boat, same spot
No shadows = solid 34FPS no mouse stuttering
Full shadows = 24 FPS Jerky mouse gone
But as said, the particles are messed up. The bow wake reaches now all the way to the middle of the boat and can be seen inside the boat due to this.

Does anyone else suspects that there is a problem with antialiashing? It doesn't seem to be 100% ok.
ATI HD4850-512 with CCC 9-12.

Can you please elaborate on what it is? :DL

I can't do this; when I hit CTRL+ALT+DEL, I go to desktop and have to cancel; I can't right click on anything.
Never mind; to minimize my game, I have to use ALT+TAB and then I can change priority and affinity in task manager/processes
Hi, I use vista 32 bit. i checked task manager and dont see set affinity. When i do the ctrl alt delete and rightclick sh5 exe, I dont see affinity. can you post pics?

After you start and minimize the game, open task manager, go to processes, select SH5 (or SH3,4), right click on it, and you should see the options to change.
I use Windows7,64 bit; but it should work on Vista 32.

Sounds like some ridiculous thread mutex issue when you run the game on multiple cores. Sadly, PC-only engines are still slow to catch on the multithreaded paradigm.
Admittedly this engine is running smoother than SH4's was.
