Yeah, how do i identify ships? :/
I cant find anything remotely similar to the way its done in SH3 etc.
All i can do is lock / look at a target with my periscopes or binoculars, the crewmates ALWAYS say unknown target, even if we are literally 10 meters away and the english flag, fishing poles or destroyer-shape is clearly visible to even the most blind grandmothers in the world.

Surely its not supposed to always just say Unknown ship, right?
Give me something! Unknown English Merchant, anything! I can clearly see the flag with my naked eyes :P
Is there some obscure keyboard shortcut i have to enable in the Commands.cfg like with Depth to Keel?
Thank you.

Before you lock click on your XOs picture and say "Turn TDC ON". That'll enable you to access the Req Manual stuff.

So with the default automatic system, you cant identify ships, but with the manual system you can? :P

which you do by clicking on the underlined words 'unknown target'.

same for the other settings in the solution.

The game only cares about identification to use the stadimeter which it considers to be part of the TDC. It's assumed that no TDC, no stadimeter, no recognition.

If you're like me and can't hit anything other then with the "connect the dots method" only reason I ID them is for the torpedo depth setting. Here's how to do it.

Look through periscope

XO's picture and dialogue box should be underneath with turn TDC on or Nevermind options.

Turn it on then lock on your target. Should be a section that says Unknown Freighter or escort depending on what your looking at.

Click the underlined word and it will bring up some images of ship types in that class. You can scroll left or right to find the one you need.

On the side is a clear box, when you find the correct ship type, click that clear box to set the data.

Now you should have at least the running depth in the torpedo depth calculator.

Break lock off the ship and turn the TDC off. Re-lock on and connect the dots.

I hate doing it that way :(
